Is Siberian Ginseng Safe to Take with Adrenal Issues?

Posted By Lauren (Queens) on 06/17/2015

Hey Bill / Mama to Many / anyone with an answer....

Is it safe to use siberian ginseng if you have issues with your adrenals? I am reading a lot of conflicting reports about its use and now I am worried to try it. I was hoping that it would have help me in coping with the stressors in my life. I just seem to crumble whenever something stressful happens in my life. I had high hopes on this product but now I am reading that it can act as a stimulant and eventually makes your adrenals worse. Please guys I need to know asap if its worth trying. Thank you all in advance for your help.

Dear Lauren,

Siberian Ginseng does have a stimulating effect on the adrenals (glandular system), according to Mark Penderson, author of Nutritional Herbology. Often, though, herbs end up regulating function of body systems.

It is hard to know just how it would affect you personally, though. So many variables exist from person to person. Mullein is a very mild but effective herb, but one of my children is allergic to it.

Passionflower may be an option for you. I have used it successfully for anxiety symptoms. I use a tincture. Passionflower is a sedative (though it never makes me feel depressed, just takes the edge off tension.) It affects the nerves, heart and liver. It also has an anti-spasmodic effect. (Though it doesn't make me feel sleepy if I take it during the day.)

St. John's Wort is also used for anxiety and is considered a sedative (and an anti-depressant! )

I wouldn't rule out that Siberian Ginseng would help but there may be other herbs that would do as well or better for you without affecting your adrenal issue.

Keep in touch on this and let us know how it goes.

Go to jingherbs site, they have many podcasts, some of them specifically talk about ginseng, different types of it.

Yes, ginseng is excellent support for adrenals but you may need to try a couple of products to find the one that's best for you. Bee pollen is excellent, too.

This is probably out of date now but, siberian ginseng is an adaptogen ideal for adrenal fatigue. I have just started taking it. There is a really good write up about it in natural news. Hope this helps.
