Dear Barbara,

I have been using baking soda on my teeth as a tooth powder for about a year. I have had no problems with it. My dentist, who is not a "natural" dentist, is fine with it and says it is what people use to use before toothpaste.

Hi Barbara...Bicarbonates are naturally found in human saliva and its purpose is to keep the mouth alkaline. So no, baking soda (aka sodium bicarbonate) will not harm teeth.

What will harm teeth are acidic foods like raw vinegar(acetic acid), concentrated lemon juice(citric acid) and Coke(citric acid, phosphoric acid, carbonic acid). The calcium in the teeth will therefore be eroded by these acids.

I've also been using baking soda regularly to alkalize my body on a daily basis for over 10 years and I still only have 3 fillings in my teeth. I'm 65 y o.
