Iodine for dangerous radioactive fallout

Posted By David (Butler, Pa. Usa) on 03/12/2011

I hear that we are in danger of radioactive fallout from Japan here in USA. I was told to take iodine a day before it arrives. Where do you get this and how much do you take?

Hi David,

Try Potassium Iodide... Good health food stores will sell it. I got mine at Whole Foods. Not sure about dosage for radiation exposure. Maybe someone else will know.

Just follow the instructions on the bottle. I have Potassium Iodide from EIDON Ionic Minerals and it calls for 2 or more drops in 4oz of juice/water daily or as directed by a health care provider. I also have Lugol's Solution 5% and it doesn't have any directions. I copied the following from the seller's website:

When used to maintain the iodine content of the body the dose is small and is taken only on certain days of the week. When the mineral content of the body is analyzed, only a trace of iodine is found. Ten drops of iodine represent more iodine than is found in the entire body. For this reason, the dose of Lugol's solution of iodine is one or two drops, depending on your body weight. If you weigh 150 pounds or less, for example, your dose to maintain the normal iodine content of the body is one drop, taken at one meal on Tuesday and Friday of each week. If you weigh more than 150 pounds, the dose should be two drops instead of one. It is useful to remember that the human body works on the minimum of anything it needs. If there should be a rise in sickness in the area where you live, it would be well to take the Lugol's solution three times a week instead of two, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for the purpose of storing up reserve.

I would up it to one drop a day during this time of concern. I'd also be interested in anyone else's opinion on this.

I can see where this topic could be huge in the next days, especially since there are tens of millions on the USA west coast alone watching with great concern the events in Japan.
I have already heard some outrageously misleading and just plain false information on Iodine/fallout go out to millions by at least one well known radio talk show name! The best place to go to get detailed, accurate information on iodine uptake should be the well known 'Iodine doctors', right?

I found this in less than 1 minute , and anyone can go to the sites of the other name doctors, such as Dr. Guy Abraham, Dr. Donald Derry (retired), Dr. Jorge Flechas, Dr. Donald Miller, Dr. Brownstein, Dr. Jonathon Wright, etc.

There will also be some information on sites like www.scribd.com

Isotopes of Iodine
Scientists have made 37 isotopes of iodine. Most of them disappear in seconds or minutes. I-127 is the stable, naturally occurring isotope. Four other isotopes, which are used clinically, have half-lives varying from 13 hours to 60 days. Three of them, I-123, 124, and 125 are made in a cyclotron and are used for diagnostic purposes. I-125 is also used in brachytherapy for prostrate cancer, where urologists inject seeds containing this radioactive isotope to kill the cancer. I-131, with a half-life of 8 days, is made only by nuclear fission, either in a nuclear plant or by exploding a nuclear weapon. It is used diagnostically and to treat hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer, and Hodgkin's lymphoma.

KI Blockade of Thyroid Irradiation by I-131
The Department of Health and Human Services has approved potassium iodide, in a dose of 130 mg, as a thyroid blocking agent in radiation emergences. To be most effective, however, it must be taken in a window 24 hours before and up to 2 hours after exposure, as these grafts show.

It doesn't have to be KI. Sixteen drops of Lugol's solution, 8 Iodoral tablets, or 3 to 5 drops of SSKI work just as well. Actually, Lugol's solution is better than KI because the breast concentrates iodine, which KI does not have, and would better protect the breast from radioactive iodine. And lacking an oral source of iodine, applying 2 percent tincture of iodine to the skin works almost as well. Painting iodine on the abdomen in a 4 x 8 inch patch blocks thyroidal radioiodine uptake by 95 to 99 percent.

A person who takes 15 mg of iodine a day is already well protected from the radioactive iodine in fallout. The thyroid gland will retain less than 2 percent of absorbed I-131, similar to that after consuming a 130mg KI tablet.

HI U SUSAN, , , , You are right on track with the situation in Japan. The jocky itch is not a deal if your consumed by radiation. I try real hard not to get run off by the management, but dummies put me in the top of the tall Pine tree. This whole site needs to be consumed by what to do when radiation hits. To hell with BV. I don't care if you stink. The world is in a ditch and we talking about Athletic's foot or some other such crap. Get real people. Discuss things that really affect your life. A week ago it was trivial stuff , now it's how to detox your body of radiation. We in tough city and you dang people need to shift gears. We need our best minds to come on site. GET REAL. WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT RADIATION AND NOTHING ELSE. If I offend you, then kiss my grits. This world is in deep stuff and you folks whistling Dixie. =====ROBERT HENRY======

Thank you, Tom, for such an informative and level-headed response to radioactive fallout. Great links, too. Years ago, Dr. David Derry was treating me for my thyroid problems (I lived in B.C. At the time) and he suggested that I use Lugol's iodine. I'm very thankful I met him. Thanks again - it's very much appreciated.

Stop for a moment. Breathe. Get a grip Robert Henry. We will all survive what truly happens by following the right information available... Or not and we will die. You can't change it. Deal with it. Live your life while you can and stop excessing on what MIGHT happen.

Robert Henry - You do in fact offend me, and no, I will not "kiss your grits" as you so quaintly put it. (Wasn't this a 1970's sitcom line? - oh YES, Flo on the "Alice" show used to say that charming line every week).

My POINT here is that this is a COMMUNITY type of FORUM. People have the right to post what THEY care or are concerned about, and or are interested in health-wise - as long as the moderator does not find it offensive or against policy.

Last time I looked this is not the ROBERT HENRY list. If you would like to be in control of the topics, please feel free to go out there and form your own site. I, for one would be HAPPY to see you go.

There is no need to put people down here. We all have our issues, and want to play nice and be helpful to one another. Please remember this.

Yeah, well as for the YELLING about radiation - it's not a one topic website - nor the R. H. Personal list. If you don't care for the topics, then don't read them. That's all the control that's available here.

Miso contains a substance called zybicolin which helps to prevent radiation poisoning and effectively prevented radiation poisoning after the atomic bombing in Hiroshima.

Well... Lets hope the radiation will be contained, but to the extent that it isnt (and for those fearing exposure) it would be hard to argue that it wouldnt trump many less serious concerns. I am currently taking a specific kelp supplement (for my thyroid) that was formulated by Russian scientists after the Chernoble nuclear accident. I dont believe I'm permitted to mention the brand here, but perhaps a search w/ both 'kelp' and 'Chernoble' would bring you to the product? (It was recommended to me by a knowledgable nutritionist/herbalist who reports good results with its usage. ) The scientists recommended a specific routine, which, if I recall correctly, was 6 per day for a few days... Then 9 per day for a few days... Then 12 for a few days..... Then back down to six per day for several more weeks, and then 3 daily for maintainence. I hope this is helpful for someone somewhere? My thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by the earthquake/tsunami.

Wow what are you so angry about? Don't answer that, it's rhetorical. Tell us how to detox or write advice about fallout, but don't harang us with your personal panic. That solves nothing, and no one wants to read about your grits.

I am wondering about what I should do if I currently have a hyperthyroid and am taking methamazole (ugh!!!! ). Will taking potassium iodide make the medicine not work or what? im confused. I have asked this question or similar before I was taking medication and never got an answer. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

David you're in PA. The Japanese disaster is not affecting you. It may not even affect the west coast, although that remains to be seen. Despite hysteria-mongering conspiracy sites spreading completely unfounded rumors without one credible shred of evidence, at this time there is no specific danger to any part of the US.

I would urge people to chill out, research factual information for yourself from reliable sources, and stop panic buying things like potassium iodide that should be going to those who actually need them.

Sorry Robert Henry, but if you have a bladder infection and peeing feels like passing glass, I'm afraid radiation comes a close second. We still need our earth clinic friends to answer our regular ole everyday questions so folks 'keep talking and answering'!!!!

I can't believe the situation in Japan isn't constant headline news. This is playing out to be bigger than any nuclear disaster we've ever seen. I have a question about the radiation: So the SSKI can protect us from radioactive iodine, but what about all the other forms or radiation fallout such as radioactive strontium?

Hi, I don't think there is much we can do about radiation. It's electromagnetic energy resulting from the desintegration of heavy atoms. I believe that if there is a less to learn from what going on in Japan is Say no to Nuclear. The whole planet has to stop it.

The workers who work inside the centrals in Japan are sacrificing themself as the radiation there is so high. My thoughts to the people of Japan.

... at this point in time, you are placing yourself at more risk of radiation issues by using your cell phone every day than you are from radiation fallout from Japan.

Just saying.

There's no shortage of info out there!

Here's today's offering from Mike Adams:

www.naturalnews.com/031731_radiation_preparedness.html
He sounds to me a little aggressive, but you have to realize it's written for anyone on and near the US & Canada west coasts, not anyone a thousand miles or more away.

Most internet potassium iodide pills I've seen are completely out of stock and on months back-order.

Unfortunately, completely missing from this article is any mention of the greatly heightened risk of earthquakes there due to the 'Super Moon', which has a time window through to March 26:

Jim Berkland on FOX March 14:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQXDt4VdS0E&feature=player_embedded
Here's a March 14 posting with Dr. David Brownstein, one of the iodine docs! It has every detail on iodine dosage before/after/when:

www.blog.imva.info/medicine/iodine-treatments-radiation-exposure

Iodine will do nothing to protect a person from uranium, cesium or plutonium radiation exposure so one has to turn to my full protocol and especially to eating clay and clay baths to try to remove these other particles as fast as possible.

That answers the question of whether iodine in any form (SSKI, KI, Lugol's) can negate the effects of other radioactive isotopes from a reactor or elsewhere, the answer is unfortunately NO, and it has nothing to do with nuclear physics because chemical (molecular-level) binding and reactions are determined by such things as reactant molar concentrations, temperature, and electron shell configurations.

Here is a whole raft of comprehensive detox & decontamination protocols:

IODINE, GLUTATHIONE, NATURAL CHELATION, CLAY & BAKING SODA:

Actually, Carly isn't right, as our cell phones do not emit Cesium-137, Iodine-121, and other much more dangerous forms of radiation. Please don't take this situation lightly, as it has the potential to slowly and painfully lower the quality of life for large populations. Be informed. The mainstream media will likely continue to downplay the situation.

You are correct Mark.

I was not attempting to write a scientific article - just trying to point out that NOBODY talks about the very real dangers of cell phones EMF's and they are also causing damage to people. I do believe quality of life goes down when one develops brain cancer as well.

Just saying that at this point in time, there is no need to be chicken little running around the barnyard yelling that the sky is falling. Mass hysteria does nobody any good.

I do agree with you, being informed is ALWAYS a good thing! :-)

It was not ever my intention to tell people NOT to discuss it - it is a real threat. There just no point in making blanket statements to me about how we are all doomed to die of radiation poisioning over this if you do not quote your (reputable) source. I hope this makes sense... In a rush. Thanks - Carly

God Bless the People of Japan.
