I have cough sore throat and severe earache

Posted By Nettle101 (London, Uk) on 06/25/2011

Please help me! I have severe pain in both ears now with a tickley cough and sore throat. I had flu with temp couple of days ago but not now. I have tried warm garlic oil, colloidal silver with olive oil and oil of oregano but these two remedies have not worked. Coughing makes the ear pain unbearable. My whole head and face hurt. Teeth are now very sensitive. Not catarral other than a little post nasal drip. Even tried eucalyptus inhalation and saline solution neti. Just don't want to take antibiotics. Should I continue longer with natural remedies?

Hi Nettle -

If coughing makes the ear pain unbearable - then I would guess that you might have a strep infection, or something similar.

If it is truly the worst sore throat/ ear pain that3 you have ever had, you most likely need some antibiotics. Just ask for an old tried and true one, like augmentin or amoxicillin - and not one of the newer ones. Some of the newer ones I am not thrilled with. (Not that any of them thrill me, but sometimes you just have to take them).

My daughter had elevated liver enzymes after taking cipro, and her eyes turned yellow. (She had mono, and this was a few years ago... before I knew better on the antibiotics).

Anyway, I think it is probably time to see a doctor. So sorry, and I hope you feel better.

we have always used a piece of cotton moistened with olive oil to get rid of earaches. Just leave it in the ear or change when you want. within 48 hours it is usually gone.

Hi Carly-had an awful night of excruciating pain and a Doctor prescribed steroid and antibiotic (neomycin sulphate) ear spray which I have had to take. Also, prescribed amoxicillin capsules which I will take this evening as I can't seem to hold anything down at the moment, not even painkillers as severe nausea. Still taking colloidal silver - 2teaspoons a day. If I do have strep bacterial infection than I suppose I'll have to take antibiotics, but do not have white patches on my tonsils.

If any other advice, please let me know as haven't taken antibiotics for nearly 15years as did readily when younger and had such a depleted immune system with various problems which I eventually resolved through good nutrition and natural remedies.

Hi Nettle 101, My hubby is going through similar. His started 3 weeks ago, I have never seen him in so much pain. I tried a few things that have all worked at one time or another for him in the past, garlic oil having always worked previously but not this time. Pain killers did not help, he was waking through the night every 60 - 90 mins in bad pain. An application of heat would ease it just enough for him to drop off for a short while till it woke him again. By the third night he was waking every 30 - 60 mins then I made a tea of cayenne, lemon and honey - well - he had immediate pain relief. Thanks ever so much Jack from Toledo & EC (earache page). Whilst it did not stop the pain from returning, a few sips & he would drop of to sleep in a few mins (with his small fist sized heat wheat on his ear) instead of it taking 30 mins or so. I also started him on GSE (grapefruit seed extract) and cats claw liquid extract 3x a day plus daily a large dose of cod liver oil. I read about oregano oil for pain, so mixed a couple of drops with olive oil and rubbed it around the ear and neck. This was when we discovered his neck was swollen on the same side. Within mins the pain eased and in about 30 mins the swelling started to subside. This last week he was only waking once or twice a night depending on how cold it got (winter here). He has not needed the cayenne for the last two days but does occasionally still need the heat. I had intended to post this when he is finally over it but maybe the cayenne will work for you. It really has been a God send for us.

PUT A TEA SPOON INTO A CUP OF HOT WATER, LAY ON YOUR SIDE, LEFT OR RIGHT FIRST. POUR OLIVE OIL ON 2 THE SPOON SO IT WARMS UP. WHILST LAYING ON YOUR SIDE, TRICKLE THE OIL OFF THE SPOON IN TO YOUR EAR. LAY ON YOUR SIDE 4 3 MINS, PUT A COTTON WOOL PLUG IN TO STOP THE OIL RUNNING OUT, TURN OVER TO OTHER SIDE AND REPEAT. LEAVE THE COTON WOOL IN OVER NIGHT. REPEAT IF NESSACERY TILL IT CLEARS. COLD PRESSED EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL IS BEST. HOPE THIS HELPS. LOVE ANDREA C X X X

andrea, we used to do that for earaches, but later found out that just putting a piece of cotton moistened with the olive oil in the ear (not much or it will drip! ), works just as well, usually in a day, sometimes two days. and you can continue daily activities, no need to be in bed.

Have had a busy day dealing with my sore throat and fierce earache in both ears. Was so afraid it was strep throat and in my madness started taking amoxillin. Fear is an awful thing! Anyway, tonight feel much better, had no pain killers! Severe nausea gone, no pain in rt ear and feels clear, slight sore throat but can swallow without pain. It's all to this fantastic website! So today took Apple Cider Vinegar (2tbsp) with water (8oz) and cayenne, did neti with acv(4 drops)/4oz water to each nostril am and pm. Then sipped thick gloop of cayenne (1tsp), 1tbsp manuka honey, 1tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar and 2tbsp warm water. Later did hydrogen
Peroxide in ear - no reaction. Couple of hours later had Severe diarrhoea, so followed it with 2 litre of water enema. Had a large glass of coconut water to balance electrolytes. Now in the evening having a cup of warm water with1tsp of evco and a good sprinkle of cayenne and my rt ear has popped.

Note: botty firey but easily soothed by castor oil. Before bed, I will have some ivy and thyme drops to further decongest sinuses. I hope tomorrow the pain in my rt ear will have disappeared. Also, no more nausea and I think pndrip has stopped but still have a heavy head and a lot of sensations an back of head, as sinuses still congested.

Hi Maria. Thanks for the cayenne information. It has definately been the winning formula (including acv)regarding the painful ears and awful sore throat which have now gone! Never had such pain in my life as that of earache. I am now sipping the garlic tea as want my sinuses to clear of infection and ears to 'pop' and stop the pulsating / beating sensation in both ears.
