Posted By Mary (Arcadia, Ca) on 02/05/2017

Hello everyone here at EarthClinic. My question is I have a brother 74 years old who has Parkinsons Disease. He is 5'10 and now weighs 139 lbs before diagnosed with PD (1 year) he weighed 215 lbs he is literally vanishing away. Can someone help me. I heard Dr. Joel Wallach speak about eating alot of eggs. Whats the best way to cook them and any other food that will help him gain weight. Thank you all and God bless you.

Dear Mary,

I am sorry your brother is suffering like this!

Is the issue that he eats and that his body isn't absorbing the food? Or is it a lack of appetite?

I would say the best way to cook eggs is the way he is most likely to eat them. If you can get farm fresh eggs, all the better. And I would not cook them in coconut oil. Coconut oil is a popular weight loss remedy. And if you fry eggs in coconut oil, they stick, anyway. I would cook them in butter. No stick, plus some fat calories.

Just today someone posted that home made kefir was causing an increase in appetite. Maybe that would help? If he would eat it, it would be something good to have in the diet.

Is he on medications that affect his appetite? Or depressed? That can cause a decrease in appetite.

Just a few thoughts....

In reply to Mary (Arcadia, Ca),

I see you are in California and marijuana is legal there. Some people find that this herb can act as an appetite stimulant, but you didn't say if that is the problem that your brother has or not. If you research it in regards to PD, some folks living with PD find that this herb is also helpful for temporarily reducing tremors as well as other common PD symptoms. Here are links to a three part video series that discusses marijuana and PD. Be sure to watch all three videos.

Mary, I realize that many people have preconceived ideas about marijuana, but if you knew absolutely nothing about marijuana and your doctor just told your brother to try this herb because some people living with PD get some benefit from it, what would you do?

It is not necessary to smoke it as it is available in sublingual drops, cookies, oil, brownies, butter, candy and many other forms. The drops are likely to be fairly consistent and easy to use whereas the food products will not be as fast or as consistent, but still useful. It is available at any dispensary in your area.

Another benefit that some people get from the herb is as a sleep aid.

On a related note, it will likely also be helpful for your brother to bring his vitamin d level (25 OH d serum level test) closer to the the top of the reference range (30 ~ 100 ng ml) than to the bottom of the range. The following study suggests that bringing your 25 OH d serum level up may help significantly slow disease progression in PD patients.......something that is not possible with any of the currently available meds that his doctor can prescribe for him.

Good health to your brother going forward, Mary!

Mary ... I just learned that Parkinson is, or can be, autoimmune. In my Post about MMS, I found a patent with great research. Autoimmune stops by taking sodium chlorite, the first part of MMS, and you don't take it all of the time. Since sodium chlorite works, chlorine dioxide may also work, which is safer.... Bob

Mary,

I suggest you pick up some bone broth next trip to the grocery, or if you have time you can make some in your crock pot. You can heat a little bone broth, add some tamari or sea salt, a little onion, a splash of lemon juice if you like, and crack an egg, stir up in a bowl and drizzle this into your slowly simmering broth. The egg sets instantly. Turn off the heat and serve. The broth is delicious and nourishing all by itself and easy to sip throughout the day.

PD patients often have had years of constipation so you might consider using the probiotic capsule recommended by P. Raghavan found here on the diabetes ii page under "kefir" title in the table of contents. PD patients also often suffer from overgrowth of candida so you may want to watch his refined carbohydrate intake, even though you are worried about weight gain. Make every single calorie count.

Sorry, I have had some of the digestion, weight, food issues. The B vitamins are made in the gut and some take the supplements but the gut can't process them . So kefir helps create healthy enviroment for B vitamin production and then I would supplement some added B for digestion and appetite.

Eggs have sulfur and lecithin in them and you can supplement with MSM and lecithin granules .Take a vitamin C with the MSM .

You might read watercure website on balancing electrolytes to aid his digestion health and immune responses.

Dear mama to many I feed my brother as much as I can but he keeps losing weight. I don't think his body is absorbing it. yes he does have depression and many negative thoughts as well. He eats very well but I think it's the thought of having Parkinsons that is hurting him. I give him anything healthy in hopes he will gain weight. I even give him things that are not so good for him in hopes he will start to put on weight. He refuses to take any medication for Parkinsons. Thank you for your suggestions.

Peace and love,

Mary

Mary, I have heard that Spirulina is given for malnutrición, or the inability to absorb nutrients.

Thank you mama to many. My brother eats well but keeps losing weight. He is depressed and has many negative thoughts. He refuses to take medication and does use marijuana. He also has obstructive sleep apnea and PTSD. He is always constipated as well. I am my wits end. I would love to see him get well or at least better. Thank you and God bless you.

I have found that eliminating wheat/gluten (this also means excluding wheat fibre and whole grain wheat too) solved the constipation problem. Plenty of other sources of fibre in vegetables. B complex is very good for depression, particularly Niacin. This link might be useful with regards to niacin and depression, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiI7AcH1UIU&t=18s. Some very good replies here. I hope you find something that works for your brother.
