Need Natural Remedies to Cure Ulcers and Prevent More From Occuring

Posted By Bess (Chesapeake, Va) on 03/28/2017

I am very confused. I had an endoscopy and dr found an ulcer. I started Apple Cider Vinegar & baking soda to alkalize the acid as well as slippery elm and marshmallow root. (He prescribed protonix, then nexium, then zantac--all gave me diarrhea & leg cramps). So I went back in 3 months for another edoscopy and the ulcer is healed, but now I have 2 more in my stomach and gastropathy, too. The only factor I cannot control is stress--dh is ill and I can't help stressing over that. I eat bland and drink plenty of water. Now they want me to start sucralfate. What can I do that I"m not already doing? My research shows gastropathy is due to too much mucus, so is slippery elm a good thing (since it generates mucus)? I don't drink coffee or soda, usually just nettle tea or water. I take melatonin at night for sleep and sucralfate can cause insomnia. I feel like I'm on a hamster wheel--the more I do to help myself the worse I get.

Dear Bess,

What a trial you are having; and disappointing that these remedies seem to be giving you mixed results...

Regarding slippery elm - I don't think it makes your body produce mucous. It is a mucilage herb, meaning it produces a slippery mucous-like substance when mixed with liquid. This slippery stuff coats and soothes inflammation in the digestive tract or on the skin when you use it externally.

It sounds like you have tried many good things...have you tried aloe and cabbage juice? Milk kefir?

You may need to eliminate some offending foods if you haven't already - fried foods, coffee, alcohol, sugar, processed foods are a few that are particularly hard on the digestion....

I hope you feel better soon. Please let us know how you are doing.

Mama, thanks for your reply. Yes, I took cabbage juice, 1 cup 3x/day for the first month, then backed off a little because its inconveniet at work. I've been drinking homemade dairy kefir for years, a glass or so a day. I take a daily probiotic as well and eat fermented foods (i love Bubbies pickles). Pretty much for the past 3 weeks I've eaten cream of wheat or oatmeal for breakfast (with a 1/2 tsp l-glutamine powder), take vit d3 and Garden of...multivitamin, take 1/2 tsp baking soda 2x/day. Drink nettle tea 2x/d and other than that only water. lunch is baked chicken or fish w/ a slaw-type salad (no mayo) and supper is pretty much vegetarian--beans, quinoa, greens, crucifers, that sort of thing. I don't snack. I have just started experimenting with essential oils so that's my next try. The dr wants me on protonix/nexium/zantac/sucralfate but every one of those either gives me diarrhea or leg cramps or both. I apply mag oil 10 drops 2x/day. I started taking slippery elm and marshmallow root when I first learned I had an ulcer. I just can't get the Apple Cider Vinegar down very often but will try harder. I take no other medications besides trying the acid reducers. I am not overweight and dont drink or smoke. My urine ph in the morning is pretty close to neutral. I'm at a loss for what to do, although I wonder if the drs meds don't make things worse. I looked at the side effects and they can cause ulcers! Thanks for your input.

Dear Bess,

Wow, it seems like you would be the last person with ulcers with all you have done and are doing....situations like this make me think that stress affects our health more than we think...

A few more thoughts...stress depletes magnesium and vitamin C. Perhaps those would be some supplements to consider (maybe you have said those, now I am losing track...) Epsom salt baths are a great way to get your magnesium and reduce stress as well.. Sodium ascorbate is less stressful to the system are far as vitamin C goes.

Another poster mentioned activated charcoal. Here is a link about using that for ulcers....you just have to be careful about taking it with medications. It helps with inflammation and bacteria....

You have learned and studied a lot, obviously, so I am trusting that you will find a good solution. Keep us posted.

My two best remedies for gut healing is the Zantac with a green smoothie containing lots of Chlorella. The second is DGL and Allantoin taken together.

Also consider Liver, Gallbladder, and Pancreas cleansing as these may be a causative factor.
