Hormonal Imbalance and Mittelschmerz (Ovulation Pain)

Posted By Christian (Atlanta, GA) on 10/09/2021

I had been having some abnormal cramping so on February 7th of 2020 I went to my gynecologist to find out what was going on and she did an ultrasound and determined that I had a ruptured ovarian cyst. At that time I was 38 years old and she said that at my age sometimes hormones can get out of balance which can cause ovarian cysts.

I had a follow up pelvic ultrasound on October 15, 2020 and it showed that the ovarian cyst was gone. It showed that I have a small 1.9 cm subserosal fibroid. My doctor said that it was so small and wouldn't cause any pain or bleeding. I am still having pain in my lower back and upper thighs AFTER my period ends.

I have no pain before my period or really even during my period and I have light to normal bleeding but the pain starts after it ends and through ovulation. It is lower back pain and pain in my upper thighs. My doctor diagnosed me with the condition called Mittelschmerz (which causes cramps and pain during Ovulation) and prescribed pain medicine.

I don't want to keep experiencing this pain on a monthly basis and become dependent on pain medicine.

I took these supplements to help with hormone imbalance and Estrogen Dominance - Vitex, Maca and DIM. I didn't see much of a relief so I stopped taking them. Now I just take B6, D3, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc, Magnesium, Omega 3 and Turmeric.

I believe that I am dealing with Hormone Imbalance - Estrogen Dominance. Any idea about what could be going on based on what I described?

Dear Christian,

I have had upper thigh pain related to cycle difficulties and it is pretty miserable and even surprising. I didn't even connect the pain at first.

I really do not have a guess at the cause, but agree that hormones seem to be at play, given the regular timing of the pain.

I have found that red raspberry leaf tea is amazing for female pelvic difficulties. It is the first thing that came to my mind that you could try. Traditional Medicines makes a quality tea bag. I buy them by the case of 6 boxes and drink three strong cups of the tea a day when I need to.

Castor oil packs or charcoal poultices are also very helpful for relieving pain. I have used both (not at the same time) on the lower abdomen overnight many times. Not only do they relieve pain, they are healing. Either one has the potential to reduce the fibroid. (Don't use castor oil packs during your cycle though, as that can increase the bleeding.)

Herbalist Rachel Weaver recommends keeping animal products (even organic ones) to a minimum when you are dealing with female difficulties and estrogen dominance. Because animals meat and milk contains hormones (even organic ones, because all animals have hormones, the organic ones just may have less.)

Keeping sugar and processed foods to a minimum is also helpful when dealing with any kind of pain or hormonal issue.

If you cannot get relief for your problem, you might consider getting a second opinion. I agree that relying on pain meds long term is not an ideal solution!
