Help needed on son w schizophrenia

Posted By Earl (Brantford, Ontario, Canada) on 07/09/2011

Hi, I am a little perplexed. My son was diagnosed with this disease 6 years ago. He is now 26. He is on medication but it doesn't seem to be working. He drinks heavily and smokes about 2 packs a day. He is scaring me to the point I fear for his life. He says he sees aliens all the time and one day he won't be around because they will take him. Then he immediately jumps into if I am still alive that is. I tried talking with his pyschiatrist but with the laws on privacy they won't talk to me. Is there something I can do? I would like for him to try the vitamin d and niacinimine. But I don't know if he would take it. He is also keeping food stored in a closet because the end of the world is coming. Please let me know what I can do to help him cope with this disease or beat it.

Earl, please read this article.

In 1952, Abram Hoffer, PhD, MD, had just completed his psychiatry residency. What's more, he had proven, with the very first double-blind, placebo-controlled studies in the history of psychiatry, that vitamin B-3 could cure schizophrenia.

Niacin I think is also good for alcoholics. Search on the below website.

http://www.doctoryourself.com/review_hoffer_B3.html

Please let us know if this helps your son.

Also vitamin C mixed with water and sprayed into the mouth when you feel a craving will stop cravings for cigarettes.

Hi Earl, Is there a support group near you (one for relatives & friends) that you can get some support for yourself? To be able to continue to help your son you need someone to talk to, even just for a bit of encouragement for you when times are tougher, which they obviously are now. Whilst the law prevents your son's psychiatrist from discussing him with you, you can consult another psychiatrist to help you, providing they are not involved with your son's treatment plan. If you can find one that is in orthomolecular psychiatry that would be better, then you may even encourage your son to see them. Or you could see a caring professional re your situation, this can be a natural therapist, nurse or Dr who has some experience in this field.

The medication that your son is on sounds like it is no longer working for him or it may be that he is no longer taking it (do you ever see the empty bottle/packet). Sometimes their voice/s tell them to stop taking it. Medications can be very useful in the acute stages, but long term it can poison the system. If your son is living with you and eating at home try to have a very nutritious diet. No white (processed) foods especially sugar. Processed foods deplete our nutrients. You are on the right track regarding B-3 (singularly the best for this with Vit C) and other nutrients especially brain nutrients like fish oils. Here is a link to a Dr in the UK to look at along with the link that Debbie gave you.

Your son's drinking & smoking can be cravings for B-3. Addictions to alcohol, cigarettes & sugar are not uncommon. Whilst food hoarding is not common it does happen. I have seen the results of a locked cupboard with only fresh food stored in it for a month or two! If he does have B-3, ALWAYS start with smaller doses first and build up. He will also need a complete B as well. On the web site there are other nutrients that are needed. If you can talk with him about taking supplements then do so. First I would research them and work out which ones you can do before talking with him. I suggest choosing a time when he is more coherent (I mean when his conversation is in reality) if possible. Earl many people have had great success with nutrient therapy, so it is worth the hassle to pursue.

Music therapy can also be of help for your son and I might add for you also as if you are stressed and hassled it can aggravate your son. If you have not already done so read the EC schizophrenic page, especially the link from Joyce re Dr Hoffer

Not sure if this one is of any help but they are at least in Canada and they may be worth contacting. http://www.nmrc.ca/pages/SCHIZOPHRENIA.cfm

In direct response to Andrew who does not see a link between Celiacs and Schizophrenia. I am a biologist very interested in medicine and will try to explain the possible link. Celiacs causes inflammation, deteriation and damage of the intestinal tract. The intestinal tract is where our bodies absorb nutrients, vitamins, etc. These precursors are then used by the body to produce all the multitudes of chemicals that our bodies require to function properly including brain chemicals. If the intestinal tract is damaged then it is almost without a doubt going to cause all kinds of problems because the precursors can not be absorbed that are required in this case to create normal chemistry in the brain. The brain is a very sensitive organ that requires just the right balance in chemicals and glucose to keep it functioning correctly. It does not take much and in certain individuals for this balance to be disrupted. There has been much research linking mental illness with digestive disorders that create malabsorbtive syndromes. Hope you can understand why celiacs is being looked at for having a connection with schiz. Its all biochemical really.

To Earl, please, admit that your son is little out of control. Living in Western world, you almost can't see his other natural treatment, 'cause there are laws and regulations. I have same experienced like you, so I know exactly what you are saying. There is a GOOD DOCTOR IN INDIA, where I live now, and my son is getting better there. But I do have guardianship, so I can have some control over my son's health. You also need this to save your son from. You can contact with me or directly search the name of doctor Ratan Singh, in Jaipur, India, who is saving my son's life. My son is your son's age and he is having same things. Living in Western world, you can't give him vitamins, 'cause he will through them away. So I did not have any choice and now he is doing much better with orthomolecular treatment. I hope that will help you too.

Two thoughts -

One - just read a book called "Wheat Belly" which ties wheat consumption to schizophrenia Try a wheat free diet.

Two - look at a recently recognized malady called Pyroluria. This is a blood condition when hemoglobin production creates a byproduct which blocks certain receptors. The condition can be diagnosed by testing and is remedied by increased Vitamin B6 and Zinc - I think liquid form is better.

I have worked in mental health and know what a tough road folks with schizophrenia have.... good luck.

It is A DIGESTIVE DISORDER... Basically, food is fermenting in the stomach so the bacteria is getting past the blood brain barrier causing the mental illness. Read Gut and Psychology and that will explain it, but A HIGH FAT MEAT and coconut oil diet will help greatly. First do an elimination diet like GAP then slowly add a food in one at a time and journal how you feel. Basically, undigested proteins are causing what I call brain allergies.

My friend's son is suffering from SZ for about 8 years. I found Dr Hoffer 's treatment on internet and the patient started orthomolecular treatment 8 months ago and regularly took the vitamins and Niacin. Her mother paid so much to buy for him vitamins every week. But he ended up with suicide and admitted in hosital for few months. We didn't see any changes of cure on him at all. Sometimes I think this kind of treatment is made up or supported by supplements manufacturers.

In regards to Doctor Hoffer he states that people who have had the condition for a while(more than a couple years) will take longer to respond (years for some people) he also recommends that is be used B3 that is with their current meds allowing time to work before reducing.. Lots of information to be absorbed not a quick fix.. The B3 has helped my son but the medication interferes the key to it all is to slowly reduce away the psych meds.

TAKE THESE:

Amino Acids:

Schizophrenia is a severe Mental Disorder but here are the substances that have been shown to help

Cysteine may alleviate some cases of Schizophrenia & Glycine may reduce the severity of Schizophrenia. Methionine may alleviate Schizophrenia where Schizophrenia is caused by excess Histamine.

Vitamins:

Schizophrenia may occur as a result of Folic Acid deficiency. The Nicotinic Acid form of Vitamin B3 (3,000 mg per day) may alleviate Schizophrenia (such as Adrenochrome) within the Brain similar to Mescaline and LSD).

Vitamin B6 may alleviate Schizophrenia. Vitamin C (10 - 20 grams per day) Low levels of Vitamin D.

DON'T Take any of these:

Arginine, Glutamic Acid, L-Dopa, Methionine, Tyrosine, Caffeine among others.

You could start adding ginger (1/8 to 1/4 tsp.) in everything he eats. Ginger contains an antidepressant ingredient. 100% whole wheat should not be eaten. In fact, staying away from anything that contains wheat until his moods are better under control.

The B-vitamins should be taken together because taking only one is reported to cause deficiencies in the others.

Just would like to add my two cents worth on Schizophrenia.

I don't think that the condition is primarily a physical one. The symptoms are a give away. I think if schizophrenics were tested for psychic ability, they would register higher than the normal population. This makes them more susceptible to outside interference also. There are probably a spectrum of sub problems in this regard so would take more than a paragraph to discuss. They can exhibit a kind of sickness that many empathic sensitives go thru. Many empathic sensitives psychically "feel" what other people feel so they can struggle being well and operating among people so they may be get overwhelmed. Some schizophrenics may actually read the minds of people around them but imagine lots of psychic information from many sources coming in at the same time. Also they are more likely to attract entities which could add to problems. The primary problem would have to be addressed.

On a secondary level, there could be health issues that set up the problem. There could be some brain damage in some. Some people develop extraordinary psychic abilities after accident. Some drugs can lessen the psychic abilities. Some health problems could make them more vulnerable. I could imagine the poisoned food supply making things worse.

I would try to utilize a medium. Cassadaga, FL is the psychic capital of the world so densely packed with psychic talent. I visited there. It is kind of a run down place but very very small and nice. They have a website. They are people into their craft. Not the material world. You would want someone who is a medium and healer. Mediums have the most ability when it comes to psychics. A medium can do what a psychic does but a psychic will unlikely have the abilities a medium has. I'd search there to see if someone could do something if I had this problem.
