Needs Suggestions for Chronic Cough

Posted By Brent (Los Angeles, Ca) on 11/14/2014

I have tried many home remedies I read on Earth Clinic like apple cider vinegar, garlic tea and oregano oil for a cough I've had for weeks, but none seem to help. Does anyone have any suggestions for a cough going on 6 weeks? Thank you.

Dear Brent,

I would try high doses of Vitamin C. You can take vitamin C to "bowel tolerance." In other words, keep increasing the amount you take in a day until you begin to get diarrhea. Then cut back a bit. You could try 1,000 mg every hour. I like to use the powdered sodium ascorbate form of C. (Actually, I make my own by mixing 1 part ascorbic acid with 1/2 part baking soda.) I add it to water or juice.

I take 5,000 mg 2-3 times a day when I am sick and could probably tolerate even more but I get busy and don't take it as often as I might.

You might also try Bill Munroe's hydrogen peroxide inhalation therapy. There is a lot written about it on Earth Clinic.

It is best to avoid dairy products when you are dealing with a cough.

Is your cough dry or productive? Do you have any other symptoms?

I hope you feel better soon.

Have you any history of lung or pulmonary problems?? Or do you feel this is entirely a condition of the throat??

Try upgrading your home indoor air quality by changing to a clean and more efficient filter and consider also adding a room Negative Ion or UV air purifier.

I occasionally get a persistent cough which is usually terminated almost immediately following a Zinc/Vit-C Lozenge. I have also had good results w/ Zinc/C/Elderberry Lozenge. Last night the Lozenge did not work and I was hard pressed to get some sleep when I decided to do 3 pumps Hemp Oil/CBD which is sweetened w/ Stevia for taste, and boom, the cough was immediately ameliorated.
