Marlena,
You might want to check your son for Celiac Disease-- it's a malabsorption disorder caused by wheat/gluten. Short stature is one of the symptoms due to malabsorption. Some other symptoms: lots of cavities, weak bones, tired a lot, stomach aches, eating a lot and not gaining weight, anemia. As children, some are picky eaters. There are several websites with plenty of information, just Google "celiac disease".
Please note that the blood test is not always accurate. Try to find a doctor that has some experience with it, if possible. If the blood test is negative, you may still want to try a Gluten-free diet (but not before the test).
My first blood test was negative, but later on tested positive at aged 42. I've had Celiac disease for 1 1/2 years, but have had many symptoms since childhood.
Good luck,
Lisa
