Getting off meds for schizophrenia

Posted By Nancy (West Orange, Nj) on 10/27/2012

I read that on Ted's advice a reader was able to cure schizophrenic thoughts. I have schizophrenia and I'm currently on 3mg Halodol. I also have depression so I'm 5mg of Lexapro. I would like to get off of them. What should I take and How should I go about doing this. Never mind the depression I just want to get off the Halodol. Will the niacinamide work for delusions and hallucinations?

Nancy: Imho most doctors "over-prescribe" medications and patients are left w/ excessive negative side -effects. I would set my first goal of reducing the mg's of your meds by 50%. This is a much more realistic goal compared to getting totally off, but that's a good intent.

There are different forms of Niacin and I don't know which is best for Schizo but you will find the answers here somewhere and probably get some additional replies.

Consider the amino acid Taurine as it is very beneficial for the brain, and has a calming effect on the nervous system. Another amino to consider is SAM-e, a great mood lifter and liver aid.

Find some good Harmonic Music especially for extreme conditions like you have. There are 3 kinds: 1) Binaural 2) Monaural 3) Isochronic. The music tones have very specific actions on the brainwave frequency thereby balancing the neurology by frequency alone. Many web-sites available. YouTube has many sample vids/music from these creators and vendors for any specific condition. You will need headphones to utilize this technology.

Lastly, there are several herbs and herbal formulas that are beneficial to the nervous system. Herbs like Valerian, Passion Flower, Hops, Chinese Skullcap. One homeopathic nervine I have always been fond of is the Hylands brand Calms Forte'.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Nancy, read up on Abraham Hoffer and also Linus Pauling for schizo. Google them. When you do get off the medicines, do so s-l-o-w-l-y, diminishing LITTLE by LITTLE.

Hi Nancy... Abram Hoffer cured thousands of people who had shizophrenia in his lifetime using larger dose niacin or niacinamide. He normally recommended a protocol that used between 3 grams and 10 grams of niacin/niacinamide together with daily B50 complex, higher dose Vitamin C, higher dose lugols iodine, Selenium, Magnesium and zinc. Abram Hoffer also records that he had, on occasion, to use daily dosages of up to 30 grams of niacin to help cure schizophrenics. He also believed that schizophrenia could be caused by niacin deficiency for two basic reasons.

First -- schizophrenia and depression can be caused simply by a diet defficiency due to a lack of B vitamins and particularly niacin in the diet. Secondly, he believed schizophrenia could also be caused by a permanent genetic aberration that made the processing of niacin in the body pathways inefficient -- requiring lifelong larger dosages of niacin/niacinamide to normalze the brain in order to cure the schizophrenia. Abram Hoffer referred to this kind of niacin problem as a lifelong niacin dependency. All this and more is described in his wonderful book Niacin: The Real Story -- which I have just read.

Dr Orian Truss also records how he discovered that lugols iodine, in larger dosage, could also be used to cure schizophrenia as well as depression because of the possibility of the psychological and physiological effects of candida infestation and candida fungal metabolites -- poisonous aflatoxins and mycotoxins -- acting upon the brain. See this link:

Truss wrote a book called Candida: The Missing Diagnosis which is a diamond of a book. In it he describes the many facets of candida symptoms, the inability of modern medicine to diagnose let alone treat candida successfully and he also describes not only the physiological effects but also the mental effects of candida infestation of the body -- which can be considerable.

What are the dosages for the supplements? Can you help me Ted? I need to know how much to take of the niacin, selenium, magnesium, vitamin c, b-complex, and iodine.
