Eating Makes Me Fall Asleep After 30 Minutes, Why and What Can I Do?

Posted By Randall (Trf, Mn But Moving Back To Granite City, Il) on 03/29/2017

So I'm coming here asking for help, I'm 41, since I was around 19-20 Every time I eat within 30-45min I become lethargic and fall asleep, It feels like you have been drugged, it's dangerous for me to even try to drive when this happens, doctors have been clueless, they can't find anything wrong, they said I had sleep apnea but after using a CPAP for many months I saw zero improvement, when most I have read or met who actually have sleep apnea saw improvement immediately. I also don't have 99% of what they consider the symptoms associated with sleep apnea, I don't have cataplexy or wake up with headaches etc. this also isn't symptomatic of narcolepsy. Is this what they call metabolic syndrome? Any help would be appreciated, it's ruining my marriage.

Randall, you could try eliminating sugar, dairy and grains for one week and see how you respond.

I often feel very tired after eating as well. I have discovered that it only happens after eating a high fat meal. When eating a low fat meal, I am fine.

I find that if I eat a high carb/high sugar breakfast that it makes me very sleepy and almost weak to the point of needing to lie down. Sometimes this I can feel this way after eating the same type of things at lunch time, but as the day progresses it doesn't bother me as much. I need as much protein as possible in the first 8 hours of the day to avoid this. I have also found that eating extra salt helps - just 1/8 teaspoon will do it. Ezekiel bread is much better for me than any other kind of bread. My best breakfast is a slice of Ezekiel bread and an egg. The less sugar I eat all day, the better. If I eat an apple or pear at lunchtime, I definitely need the extra salt to counteract the sugar. Himalayan salt does the trick for me. I wish I knew why the salt helps so much. Just discovered this in past few months.
