How To Detox from Triclosan Chemical Exposure?

Posted By Concerned Consumer (South Carolina) on 07/17/2015

I recently used a product in my hair that contained the chemical Triclosan. I did not wash my hair until almost 24 hrs. later. I noticed that my hair felt very stiff and dry. When I washed it , after 3 times it still felt so dry and brittle that I was concerned that something was wrong with the product. When I was rinsing it out I also noticed that it felt very warm as it was washing down my back. My head felt a little tender too like you might feel with a slight sunburn. It's been a few days and I feel like something is still not right. What can I do to counter the affects of this chemical and to protect myself?

Dear Concerned Consumer,

For detoxing from potential triclosan exposure, I would take activated charcoal for a couple of weeks. Try 4 capsules or tablets with a tall glass of water daily for 2 weeks. Take this away from other medications, ideally on an empty stomach.

If your hair is still brittle and dry, try some extra virgin coconut oil. Take a Tablespoon or two and gently massage into your scalp and gently work it through your hair. Cover with plastic wrap and a towel. If possible, do this over night. Then in the morning, gently wash with a gentle shampoo. (Not baby shampoo. That is actually not gentle. Perhaps something from the health food store that does not have SLS in it.) After I use oil in my hair, it does take a couple of shampoos before it doesn't feel greasy.
