Dear Foofoo,
I would say it surely could be staph as that often enters in through the skin. The crust sounds like impetigo, though I have never seen it green.
Some people take turmeric daily. It is great for staph. And seems to help a lot when dealing with skin issues. Your son could try a teaspoon once or twice a day internally, with plenty of water. (or 4-5 capsules twice a day.)
I also use charcoal poultices overnight on skin infections.

Extra vitamin C may also help him to heal more quickly.

Hi Foofoo...I would simply try using 3% hydrogen peroxide topically on the backs of your son's hands. Just apply topically and let it dry. He could also wash and disinfect his hands every day in 3% HP quite safely.
Another topical remedy you could use is simply drops of gum turpentine mixed with a carrier oil like VCO or Olive Oil. Add three or four drops of turpentine to a teaspoon of oil and evenly rub this mixture onto the back of his hands twice a day. You could also use drops of lavender oil or clove oil in place of the turpentine and use it in the same way.
Lastly, if the hand infection is stubborn then the infection might not be topical but might reside deep within the lower epidermal skin layers that topical remedies cannot reach. So in this case I would use a teaspoon of 50% DMSO(dimethyl-sulfoxide) mixed with 3 drops of 5% lugols iodine and apply this mix with cotton wool in a thin layer onto the back of both his hands every day. The DMSO will carry about 80% of the lugol's iodine into the the blood. This means that the iodine is able to more deeply penetrate any local epidermal skin cells on its way into the blood and, in this manner, the iodine will safely disinfect all the cells in this skin region -- killing any bacteria, viruses or fungus there. I have also read research where they found that povidone iodine or Betadine, at a concentration of 1:100, will kill MRSA in 15 seconds. Lugol's Iodine has exactly the same disinfecting properties as povidone iodine. But do not use povidone iodine with DMSO -- you should never use povidone iodine internally.
Modern drugs has nothing to compare with lugols iodine. If you had a fungal infection + bacterial infection + viral infection then LI would help to eradicate all of them. If you go the drugs route -- you would have to purchase and take an anti-fungal plus an anti-bacterial plus an antii-viral and then pray that they actually work.
Lugol's Iodine does it all safely and cheaply both externally and internally.
