Slippery Elm is very good for the entire GI tract. It helps me and a friend with this throat problem

I was also recently diagnosed with LPR. I have the hoarse voice, coughing, lump in throat, choking, etc.

I am currently cleaning up my diet, etc and it seems that the lump in my throat is getting better. It started off with a cold in January which went into an upper respiratory infection and then on to major coughing coupled with an acid diet and hence..LPR

I believe that my diet is a major factor with me and LPR as I was eating a lot of acidic foods and higher fat meals, coffee, chocolate, tomato based products, etc.

There are a few websites to check out as far as cleaning up your diet:

http://www.balance-ph-diet.com/index.html

http://www.rense.com/1.mpicons/acidalka.htm

You have to read a lot on the topic and some foods on the site contradict one another.

Organic apple cider vinegar (_____) amongst others that have the "mother" in it as well as a freshly squeezed lemon are both alkalines and raise the pH level in drinking water which helps as well.

There are also pH test strips which you can buy to test your saliva or urine which measures the pH level in your body. A person with a lower pH level than normal is susceptible to illness, cancer, etc from my various readings.

I hope this helps a little.

Saravanan, I posted some comments in the general feedback section of LPR which may help you out.

Hi, For the last 18months I have suffering from what sounds like the "death rattles" -each time I lay down I start gurgling and in the morning bring up a huge amount of white, fluffy mucus in addtiion to gluggy mucuous like egg whites and also metallic tast in morning and development of hoarse voice... Gp thought asthmas, bronchitis/flu etc etc to no avail. Thought it might be allergy as symptoms started after bad flu and dr said my lungs damaged and now letting in allergens...... But funny thing is that is occurs whether I am at home or away, so to me allergy seems unlikely..... Dr tried me on different inhalers, nasal sprays etc to no avail so after doing my own research, I suggested to him might be LPRD and got prescription for Nexium 40 once a day... Trialing this now for 3 months and the gurgling and mucus appear to be severely reduced... I have booked to see an ENT to see if condition can actually be confirmed by tests... Just want to be sure it is what I have... Don't want to be on PPI all my life, so if confirmed, looking for natural alternatives.....Any advice?

Angela, try breathing thru very diluted h2o2 in your mouth. About 6-7 breathes each time you do it.

Would love to hear from others who have had this problem or still hve it. Lucily my own symptom is that when I lay down after a few hours I cough and cough and cannot stop, then wheeze and find it hard to breath. My doctor put me on pp1s and then pp2s, I tried them all, but could not stand the side effects which made life unbearable. I find that using the blue ventolin inhaler is the only thing that helps. But would have to use it abot 20 times in an evening sometimes. I get no side effects from this. And the docvtor will not give you taht many inhalers even if it is better than taking the pps1s. Which is ridiculous really.

I have started to take a lot of probiotics and make my own yoghurt. I also make and drink my own water kefir and will be making my own milk kefir for other biotics. And this is cheaper than the yoghurt and buying biotics. I also take a multivitamin and mineral pill each day.

Nobody has mentioned it from what I can see but I also take three fibre capsules a day to stop theliquid rising up, making it less runny, and two garlic capsules. I feel fine during the day it is just when I have laid down a while and this coughing and wheezing starts.

Any suggestions are welcome. Please bear in mind that I am in England where everything is totally different to USA and Canada. Over here people tend to make the doctor and medicine their first port of call because they can get the medicine free and the supplements are expensive.

I have Barrett's Esophogus and did not want to stay on the PPI's indefinitely. For the last 4 years I have been very careful with my diet, making my own kefir, kombucha, cultured vegetables, cut out sugar, most grains, etc. I take HCL betaine and whole food enzymes, slippery elm, DGL, drink water with cucumber with lemon, eat an alkaline diet as much as possible and the result is that I am worse than ever. I have laryngospasms with the LPR as well as all the other symptoms that go along with it. I also have two ulcers on my vocal cords. I am now at the mercy of the medical profession as the natural methods did not work, does anyone know if the kombucha could be making things worse?

Two items should help this situations.

1. Zinc Lozenges. Most Zinc L. also have Vit-C which may or may not be helpful as the acidic property may or not be a problem. If you cannot tolerate the Vit-C Z.L. then shop for other ingredient profiles that will contain items you listed like DGL or Slippery Elm. Zinc & Elderberry are good for infections & healing.

2. Cod Liver Oil, one small spoon per day until better. C.L.O. will also augment any of the Zinc Lozenge you take as they are synergistic nutrients.

I few spinal adjustments from Chiropractor may also help.

YES, kombucha is making LPR worse (it happened to me)! You say you are eating alkaline as much as possible BUT it is the acid in kombucha, citrus, fermented foods that is keeping your LPR from healing. Pepsin from your stomach has refluxed (backflowed) up into your aerodigestive tract (it even got into my ears). Then ANY dietary acid coming down the hatch REACTIVATES the pepsin, which starts digesting YOU! Hence the horrible symptoms.

Other strong dietary triggers are alcohol, fats, onions, garlic, spicy, chocolate, tomato -- yep all the foods we love to eat!

Once I cut out all food with pH lower than pH 5.0, I began to heal. No more kombucha, lemonade, citrus, anything with vinegar for LPR sufferers. There are other food & lifestyle triggers as well -- you have to trial ALL of them to see which affect your body.

Does the Betaine Hcl you are taking contain pepsin (most do). Carefully research taking supplements with pepsin, because someone with LPR may not be able to handle it.

You can heal, but your body will be predisposed to a reawakening of LPR for the rest of your life.

BTW, traditional GERD treatments of PPIs are pretty much useless for LPR.

It is not good to take any form milk product. Lemon juice is alkaline, it is good for LPR. It is good to take bitters 30 min before meal - wormwood tincture before meal or gentian root before meals. It is good to taste bitters.

Zivco, komboucha is a fermented tea. It is not dairy. Perhaps you meant Kefir which can be made with dairy.
