Comments on treatments for chronic dry eyes and mouth

Posted By Karen 4 (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) on 12/15/2011

I have chronic dry mouth, no saliva, and chronic dry eye, I was thinking of getting lipiflow, but it is $1500.00 and $120.00 for consultation, if you are approved. Then I found out it only lasts a year and then you do it again, rather expensive. I am really afraid to put castor oil in my eyes, as I have glaucoma and have had my cataracts out. Also dry nose, every opening is dry. Help

Karen 4, what I think helped me/ is helping me, is drinking more water but always with a small lick of Celtic Salt for each glass (smaller lick for 1/2 glass) AND adding a spoon of VCO to my morning smoothie.

Karen 4, have you been tested for Sjogren's syndrome? I was and luckily I don't have it. I also had very dry eyes and mouth but mostly during the night. I have no idea whether that was due to the age, due to something I was taking, due to drinking maybe too much water? I don't know but slowly I am getting better (although not younger! ). I stopped drinking so much water and take a bit of salt now and then. I also took flaxseed oil for a couple of months and started using grapeseed oil for cooking and drink a bit now and then.

Whatever worked meant that now I can have my contact lenses in without too much problems and I don't even put cream in my eyes during the night. I never had a dry nose though. Have you considered going to an ophtalmologist to have your tear production checked? I have blocked tear ducts so he advised me to put warm black tea bags on my eyes every day and when the eyes are nice and warm to try to press the rim of the eye with a q-tip. My advice would be, go on trying everything that might help and maybe one day you will find out, like I did, that you are actually getting better. I felt quite miserable for many months though... Especially when I thought that I might have Sjogren's. Best of luck....

Hi Francisca, For your own good cut out any flax products & soya as they contain high levels of phytoestrogens which can lead to estrogen dominance which can lead to a host of other problems. To convince yourself look up estrogen dominance. A study in Canada was done on the estrogen content of different foods & flax came out tops with soya 2nd. So beware how much phytoestrogens you are consuming.

Hope this info helps you & anybody else who happens to read it. Phytoestrogens even make men impotent.

Karen 4 from Toronto,

The European herbalist; Maria Treben, states that the common mallow plant is a specific for both dry eyes & dry mouth. go to http://www.mariatrebenherbs.com/66/74-mallow/itemid-0

I have never used it for this.

Miss Treben says this:

-----------------------

The small leaved Mallow grows on old walls, near paths and on waste ground, always in the neighbourhood of human habitation. Should it be found far from it, it indicates that once a house stood there.........

...... Washings with the lukewarm Mallow tea are soothing in cases of allergies in the face, which cause itching and burning......

..... Especially beneficial are eyewashes and eye compresses of the lukewarm Mallow tea for the rarely occurring drying up of the tear ducts ........

.... the daily ration steeped overnight (one heaped teaspoon of herbs per 1/4 litre). In the morning, warm slightly and the prescribed quantity is kept in a thermos flask, rinsed with hot water........

......... For dryness in the mouth, throat and nose, which often makes the patients very nervous, Mallow tea is used frequently as a gargle and rinse throughout the day........

DIRECTIONS:
Infusion: Only cold infusions! A heaped teaspoon of herbs per 1/4 litre of water is soaked overnight, slightly warmed in the morning.
Foot and hand baths: A heaped double handful of Mallow soaked in a 5 litre container of cold water overnight. The next day it is warmed so that hands and feet can stand it. Bathe for 20 minutes. It can be used twice more.
Poultice: The residue of the tea preparation is slightly warmed in some water, mixed with barley flour, spread on a piece of linen and applied warm.

Thanks Lowrence, it was probably you who said this here a while ago. My flaxseed oil is finished anyway but what you said worried me to bits. What can one take? Flaxseed oil capsules are highly recommended even in many health food shops. In my case it was recommended by the contact lenses specialist in the Eye Hospital in Basel, Switzerland. They even sell it there!

Anyway, I have just read that you shouldn't take EPO without taking Vitamin E or else it oxydises in your body. True, not true.... I have no way of telling!

Hi Francisca, You seem to have a lot of health problems and when you do a bit of research you will realise what estogen dominance does to your body & health it causes fibroids, tumors, cancer & more that is why women who are on hrt tend to get cancer more often. Even black cohosh, raspberry leave & other herbs rcommended also have phytoestrogens so it just worsens the situation. For more info go to Dr William Wong, just type in his name.

Also investigate the importance of Himalayan salt, type in sole (solay) & look for shirleys wellness center & see what is discussed there. One last thing Dr Wong will give advise on how to neutalise estrogen dominance. Flax contains 3x the amount of phytoestrogens than what soya contains. Good luck & good health.
