Hi Lee,

Two very useful remedies for IBS are low dose naltrexone (LDN) as discussed here:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17080248/

Here is a relevant quote from the link :

' The present study assessed the efficacy and safety of PTI-901 (low-dose NTX) treatment in Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. Forty-two IBS patients participated in an open-label study. Participants received 0.5 mg PTI-901/day for 4 weeks and were evaluated during baseline, during treatment, and at 4-week follow-up. Patients recorded degree of abdominal pain, stool urgency, consistency, and frequency. Primary outcomes were number of pain-free days and overall symptom relief, evaluated by a global assessment score. Data were analyzed per protocol. Global assessment improved in 76% of 42 patients. During treatment, the mean weekly number of pain-free days increased from 0.5+/-1 to 1.25+/-2.14 (P=0.011). There were no significant adverse reactions. PTI-901 improves pain and overall feeling, and is well tolerated by IBS patients. '

Another useful remedy is ginger root as discussed here in this review of multiple clinical trials :

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S266714252400099X#:~:text=Ginger appears to be effective, in any of the studies.

Here is a relevant quote from the review :

' In the current review, evidence of ginger's effect on bowel disorders is reported. A daily dose of 2000 mg of ginger is beneficial for reducing inflammation, dyspepsia, colorectal cancer and ulceration in the digestive tract of patients with IBS and IBD. '

The LDN will require a prescription from your doctor to a compounding pharmacy.

Here is a link to a typical Ginger Root product :

Both products have shown benefit for IBS-D and IBS-C

Lee, take it from an old IBS hand: Equalactin, bar none. In the US it's available OTC but sometimes the pharmacies don't carry it and you have to ask them to order it. I don't travel without it.

It's a supplement of sorts, and balances out the water in the gut. I just checked, and amazon carries it. It comes in chewable tablets. True magical stuff.

@Vera

It is for constipation, not diarrhea, let alone chronic diarrhea.

Jack, this is what AI says: "Equalactin is used to treat both constipation and diarrhea. It works by absorbing excess water in the bowel, which helps to form bulk and substance in the stool, leading to normal bowel movements. When you feel the onset of diarrhea symptoms, taking Equalactin can provide relief and prevent the episode from becoming severe."

I have used it for many years for diarrhea, including severe bouts after chemo, and have passed it on to others with excellent results. It works almost immediately. I have never seen any side effects.

What led to chronic diarrhoea? Antibiotics? New medications? A surgery? Or it just started out of nowhere?
Acute vs. chronic condition requires different approach. It is not always an infection, it could be bile duct problems. If your stool was tested for an infection, parasites, etc. taking “remedies” designed for infections are useless and could be harmful.

His condition is chronic. I don’t trust AI, I trust the wisdom of ages and common sense. chronic diarrhoea should not be treated and can not be cured by pharmaceuticals. There are too many causes for chronic diarrhoea. He is yet to provide details.

P.S. I DREAD THE TIME when we start relying on AI which at this point is just information collection. It can’t distinguish nonsense, fake and absurd from the science books what were tested by ages. Everything that was scanned gets lumped into a summary.

Jack, I recommended Equalactin based on my own use, and my father's, and my neighbors, for persistent diarrhea linked to IBS. It has nothing to do with AI, I merely used AI to show how Equalactin is officially described. The beauty of Earth Clinic is that our recommendations come from our own experience.

I did not say it will cure IBS. I said it will stop an ordinary but nasty bout very quickly and reliably. If you have your experience with another way, please share it. Why try to refute the experience of others?

My comment is just a warning to proceed with caution.
Your remedy is valid for it is based on a personal experience.
