Cause of Watery Bleeding During Period?

Posted By Lilou (Usa) on 05/08/2016

What would cause a mense to all the sudden become thin and liquidy and just pour out? It's bright red color. I'm in my late 30s. This has been going on for half a year. It started after I lost 50 pounds. I'm just slightly overweight now. I was borderline hypothyroid before, I don't know now. I have read about taking painkillers or maybe vitamin K to thickn blood? I was eating healthy and exercising a lot but in the past few months not and back to eating more junk. The problem started after a year of eating more healthy (e.g. smoothies, salads, homemade soups and soy-whey protein shakes). I haven't been having the soy-whey protein shakes for a few months now. It's better for the blood to be thicker because it just spills out of the pads, any advice thanks.

Dear Lilou,

I would not take painkillers to thicken the blood. Aspirin and ibuprofen actually thin the blood. Not sure about the others but the effect on the liver from regular use would not be worth it.

Alfalfa is high in vitamin K. Alfalfa tablets are not too expensive.

I have always tended towards thin blood. Cayenne pepper and Shepherd's Purse tincture have both been helpful to me to slow down the bleeding.

Have you seen a medical professional? Is it possible that you have fibroids or something that is contributing to this change in bleeding?

Hi Mama To Many,

Right, I had heard the painkillers can shorten mense but they also thin the blood which I don't need (and the possible liver effects long-term as you wrote). I started a Vit K supplement but will look into the alfalfa tablets.

I saw the symptoms for fibroids and don't seem to have the other symptoms. But I did realize a new symptom and my gums bled a lot when I flossed recently and yesterday they were so painful for over a day. Normally my gums are fine. I brush twice daily with a special organic tooth powder that is highly rated. I tried rinsing my gums with H202 but that didn't help much. Same with iodine tincture. I tried oil pulling with EVCO and that helped a little. I read also vitamin C and magnesium deficiencies could cause bleeding sensitive gums and I don't know if it was a coincidence but one big dose of liquid vitamin C and my gums soon became less inflamed and next day almost normal, no pain.

Looking up vitamin C (and magnesium) deficiency I do seem to fit a lot of the signs (e.g. for awhile hair and skin quality has gone down like collagen not being made like before), maybe it was depleted because I was living on whey-soy shakes and cooked soups for so long and taking caffeine pills to lose weight? Because the vitamin C is in citrus and I was just reading that cooked foods and caffeine can zap vitamin C and magnesium that are low already in soils and foods today. But I feel such depression and the caffeine really has been a wonderful anti-depressant when I consume it. Could low vit C and magnesium (and who knows what else) cause excessively thin mense blood? I am trying to go back to whole foods focused on raw fruits and vegetables and a vitamin C and magnesium oil supplement and I just ordered some colloidal mineral drops that were highly rated online. Perhaps it's a nutritional deficiency? Thanks for your help.

Dear Lilou,

I think you are on to something with the vitamin deficiency. And yes, apparently a lack of vitamin C can cause an increase in bleeding!

You may also have had some hormonal changes brought on by the soy and the weight loss (great job, by the way! ) If the nutritional/vitamin changes do not improve your situation, you might try some hormone balancing herbs. But I would give your supplements a bit of time first and see if that takes care of it.

If you should have the heavy, watery bleeding again, you might try 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper in 6 ounces of grape juice. This is what has helped me for acute heavy bleeding. I take it once or twice a day. Liquid chlorophyll is also very helpful for heavy bleeding. I have taken as much as a teaspoon every couple of hours for heavy bleeding and found it to be very helpful.

Let me know how it goes! I will be interested to hear what works. And I hope this situation is resolved soon!
