Can Charcoal Be Used with BHT?

Oscar, When taking BHT, would it be OK to take charcoal as needed as long as it is taken away from the intake of the BHT? Thanks.

Dear Ellen [ Pompano Beach FL ]: You asked for my opinion about charcoal as regards the BHT treatment so I will give it: I consider charcoal UNSAFE to imbibe, eat, swallow, etc. The danger is it could cause an intestinal blockage because does NOT break down during digestion.

Why would a person want to imbibe charcoal ? I know activated charcoal is used in water filters to help clean water. But that does NOT mean it is safe to swallow.

I am pretty sure I will catch some heat here from charcoal advocates, but you asked for my opinion and I just gave it. I do try very hard to: FIRST CAUSE NO HARM.

I really know very little about this charcoal treatment but am concerned it could cause an intestinal blockage to occur and that it could also scratch or cut into the delicate inner surfaces of the intestines....Oscar

Quick follow up for Ellen: Sometimes I do get it right. Here is what " Living Strong " has to say about " activated charcoal " studies regarding side effects:

Reported Side Effects

Taking activated charcoal may cause gastrointestinal side effects like constipation, diarrhea, darkening of the stool or vomiting. Serious complications such as bowel obstruction have been reported. It may also cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Side effects like higher than normal magnesium and abnormally high sodium have also been reported. Your body aims to keep electrolytes tightly regulated; electrolyte imbalance negatively affects muscle action and other bodily processes.

Make what you will of all that....Oscar

Dear Oscar,

Well, you won't catch any heat from this charcoal advocate. :) You were asked for your opinion and you gave it! I appreciate your caution and desire to FIRST DO NO HARM. Many, many natural remedies I am hesitant to try, because even natural remedies can have side effects.

God bless you!
