Need Help for Biting, Crawling Mites in Renovated Home

Posted By Jane (Cumbria, Uk) on 05/04/2017

I have read your site with interest. We moved into a renovated property 2 years ago and, for most of that time have been plagued by some sort of invisible, crawling, biting 'mites'. I feel I have exhausted every avenue I can think of - starting with local environmental people, the 2 private pest control companies (both of whom fumigated our house - with no success), my vet, my GP and various university departments. No one can identify these things. I do see tiny white specks - so does my dog. She sniffs round the skirting board and up my trouser legs at times when I am also aware that they are on me. 'They' do not affect many of our visitors, but my daughter who visits occasionally from Germany is affected as badly as I am. So many of the observations on your site describe exactly what we are suffering, but no one says how, or if they have been identified or if any of the treatments actually work. I gave up on chemicals about 6 months ago and now I use a 77 essential oil spray and a Skin so Soft spray, but these do not get rid of the infestation, they just give temporary respite. I would be so grateful if you can offer any help or advice.

Hello Jane,

I just watched a TV episode here in the states called Billy the exterminator. On this one he had a lady with a very bad bed bug problem, and using a very high degree of heat with blowers in the house they were able to eliminate all of the bed bugs. Mites would probably be killed as well, I think they got it up to like 145 degrees or more for a period of 7 hours straight.. If someone has a way to do this in the UK, you may want to research it. Maybe this can help you and your family.

So, I have been reading this site with much interest and thank you all for posting! I never talked to a soul about my mite problems until now. I was too embarrassed.

We adopted a sweet dog from the Humane Society about two years ago. The following Spring he began to scratch and incessantly pull his hair out until he had bloody bald spots on his back and tail. I treated him for fleas, even though I never found any, but no luck.

Coincidentally I began suffering from gallbladder failure which meant I could not absorb oil soluble vitamins such as D and E and for some reason had stopped taking my daily omega-3s. I became very itchy, scratching my legs and scalp until it was embarrassing in public and I realized I was losing alot of hair.

At first I thought it was malnutrition because of the gallbladder issues, then one day I'm sitting on the porch scratching and pulling my hair out at the root. I look over and the dog is doing the same thing. That's when I googled mites.

I shaved the dog and it seemed to subside for the season. Then spring arrived this year and his problem came back, and so did mine. My hair was actually thinning in the front and at my temples. This was devastating! I have always had thick, silky naturally blonde hair and it was the only thing about my appearance I was content with.

I went that day to the home improvement store and bought diatomaceous earth. Sitting right next to the diatomaceous earth on the shelf was Sulphur powder and on the label it states "kills mites" so I got that too. This saved me!!!

I mixed the sulfur powder 1 to 1 with the diatomaceous earth and spread it on my mattress under the sheet, in my pillowcases before I put the pillow in and on the carpet. I even put some in my hair in the evenings. The Sulphur is stinky, think rotten eggs, so I have cut back to one part Sulphur to two parts diatomaceous earth. Still works great, but not stinky. I can even wear it to work in my hair and it's a great dry shampoo.

Sulfur is the third most common mineral naturally found in the human body so relatively non-toxic on the skin and the diatomaceous earth is just dirt, so no toxicity for me or pets!

Anytime I came across a post on this site where someone reports they found a product that works I looked up the ingredients and guess what? That's right sulfur!

Dandruff shampoo in the Blue Bottle? Sulfur selenium. Nu-stock? 75 percent sulfur. Simulsan eye treatment? Sulfur 12X whatever that means...

Before I found this combination I tried ivermicin and the mites just laughed at me. On top of that ivermicin is a neuro toxin so very scary stuff! BUT MITES HATE SULFUR!!! I'm a big believer in focusing on pest control that's non-toxic and the pest can't adapt immunity to.

On this site, I read about the Borax and hydrogen peroxide so I'm about to shave the dog again and bathe him with that and then dust him with the diatomaceous earth and sulfur mix.

I mixed up sulfur powder with borax and hydrogen peroxide and some water to clean the house, and spot treat me and dog. You have to get the mix just right or it won't spray out of a bottle. The Borax makes it smell great though. I'm adding borax to the washer and it seems to help.

For eyes, to get something at the pharmacy or big box stores called Simil##n Pink Eye or Stye Eye treatment (I assume I can't put brand name brand names on here). It has "12X sulfur" and knocks out any eye infection the kids or I ever had.

My kids generally don't notice the mites, but my 17-year-old has the flu this week and came into my room this morning asking to sleep in my bed because his face was itchy and he thought his bed had fleas from the dog. :(

I will probably have to fight off mites for the rest of my life as my immune system continues to degrade with age, but at least now I can decimate the population enough to be comfortable.

Good luck to all!!!!
