Advice needed regarding cancerous lesion on ear

My husband has just found out that he has a cancer lesion on the top of his ear. It is one of those that won't spread (sorry but I don't remember the name) but which will eat the ear if that bit is not cut off, at least so says the dermatologist. He is quite anxious about the operation which will have to be done by a plastic surgeon or else he will end up with two different ears, he also feels that after the biopsy the little wound he had before which didn't seem to heal is gone so the lesion might have healed itself. Does anyone have any experience with this? I feel he should have the operation and make sure this thing won't come back.... Is there anything one can do to heal it without an operation?

Hi Francisca, it sounds like a basal cell carcinoma, they tend to ulcerate so that was the part that wouldn't heal and when the biopsy was done it seemed like the ulcer had healed which does happen from time to time. I have had the plastic surgery and they can do wonders nowaday's, tell your husband to get it removed and honestly it is worth it in the end. I have heard of cases where it will overtake the entire ear or nose and to get them as early as possible is the best way. Cheers Lily.

Thanks Lily, yes, I suppose you are right and it is basel cell carcinoma. To be honest I was so shocked when I heard the veredict that I didn't even register what it was exactly, only that it wasn't any melanoma or anything like that. My husband thinks like you do, that when they took the bit for the biopsy it seemed to heal by itself. He is away for a few days but when he comes back I am going to have a good look at it. I agree with you, he can better have a bit more cut out to make sure it doesn't come back. The dermatologist showed us a photo where such a carcinoma "ate" a man's head to the skull only to show that it is not really dangerous as the man survived. We will be seeing a plastic surgeon soon because of being on the top of the ear so that he doesn't end up with two very different ears! Great to hear that you are completely ok!
