Advice needed on hashimotos has thyroid antibodies

Posted By Joany (Talent, Oregon, Us) on 03/29/2011

I have autoimmune disease with thyroid antibiodies showing 900 on my blood test and t4 and t3 very low. I want to normalize all the numbers, if possible with natural remedies. I also see very little information about bioidentical t3 and t4 for my condition. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I've had great success using the autoimmune balancing protocols (as well as diet changes) outlined in Datis Kharrazian's Thyroid book (see my post on eliminating gluten above).

This guy makes total sense, he's done a ton of research. I just found out I have Hashi's so am seeking help.

Jenny... Thanks a MILLION for the link to DR. Haskell and Hope for Hashimoto's...

Altho I have not watched all of his (very comprehensive) videos yet... I am very impressed by his research.

I have only in the past 2 mos come to focus on HT as the cause of my inability to lose weight (and wt gain at age 7)... And I've just had serum tests done this week... my mom had Hashi's so there's a good chance I have it...

I've been researching like crazy to get to the root cause of Hashimoto's and to try and understand 1) how it's caused (which no one really talks about) and 2) best way to treat it....

Dr. Haskell has taken the same approach and has done 6 yrs of exhaustive research to arrive at this treatment protocols.

I am very impressed and will probably consult with him.

Thanks again.

I too find Dr. Haskell's approch very sensible.

I recommend everyone to see his You tube video series. It takes some time to go through it but it is full of information.

I also like the Iodine approach of Browstein and Abrhams but they even admitt there can be some side effects for those with hashi. There is some risk of having a flair up of you thyroid. Not sure how they manage this. Or do they even manage it. ??? Would be nice if someone who knows chimes in.

I have read Dr. K and I like much of his advice. However, with the exception of one person on this board I have never heard of anyone who had lasting results. Keep in mind, he does not cure Hashi, he manages the immune system and other issues that may effect the thyroid gland. His approach is relatively complicated. Most people I have spoken or communicated with stopped the treatment after running out of money or they felt it was not going well and their practioner was not skilled enough to navigate through the difficulties.

I know there are some DC's using the Standard Process Rehmania Complex to lower antibodies. This approach may go against Dr. K's immune modulation theory. I have never herd of anyone having long term success with this approach either.

It would be great if others with success weigh in.

To Jc from Boston who asked about the iodine protocol of Brownstein.

This product is Iodoral. Unfortunately, natural health has a blind love affair with iodine in the treatment of thyroid issues. Modern day thyroid problems are about TOXINS, not lack of iodine, excuse my shouting. I did an Iodoral protocol in the summer of 2007. I lost my looks on Iodoral and got that dull thyroid expression I never had before. I don't know what exactly it affected to cause that. I got very weak and in some ways never recovered despite my efforts at cleansing etc. My peroxidase Ab went from 650 to 1500 initially, then settled at 1325. The only prescription I take, is 25 mcg of levothyroxine, or my weight balloons. I will get off it entirely when I have figured it all out. (Following the GAPS diet I recently discovered and started, my peroxidase went down to 506, and I had to half the 25 mcg Levoxyl I normally take b/c my tsh went to .66 instead of .88, and I could feel it was too much now. Get the tsh under 1 according to Dr. Stephen Langer (Solved, the Riddle of Illness about thyroid disorders). He is an MD and I did phone consults with him when my health crashed and I was diagnosed in 2006, but he was right about feeling best with the tsh under 1, and about avoiding iodine like the plague, except for a "therapeutic" dose. I wish I had listened to him, but I was so anxious to substitute the dread thyroid medicine with something "natural" - lol, iodoral is inorganic, that I mulled it over for months, ignoring my intuition. So, who wants to be on a prescription OR on iodoral for the rest of their lives. We want to be well and not dependent on either. Dr Langer told me that in his long experience with patients, it "irritated" the gland; I didn't know what he meant by that, but I found out. I read a patient on the internet who said basically the same thing I am, and that Brownstein used to warn against iodine for autoimmune, but then stopped. I had read his literature over and over, and if I had seen any warning, I wouldn't have taken it - that's what I was looking for.

Sorry to talk so much, but if I can warn one person away from iodine it will be worth it. Btw, every natural practitioner I have gone to has urged me to take iodine. I tried bits of even the whole food kind (Standard Process), with bad results. It isn't about iodine, generally speaking.
