Advice needed for severe ibs

Posted By Jeff (Atco, New Jersey) on 12/14/2010

Hello,
I dont know if you answer questions but thought I would try. I am 44 yr old male and have been diagnosed with IBS-D for over 25 years. I have been on a medication of 3 doses of Questran for almost 20 years to help deal with it. But I think in the last year or so of taking this medication for so long, I am starting to get some side effects. I have read about them and I am getting fairly frequent headaches, dizziness sometimes, but the most pronounced is muscle and joint aches which is steadily getting worse. These are all listed as side effects of this drug.

I want to find a natural cure for my IBS and get off this med. I have read a lot of your website for cures but there seems to be so many different ones named by all the posters on your site. But it seems as though the ACV seems to do much more than just cure this problem so I was thinking of trying it but thought I would see what you recommend. I do know that if I was to go off my med for more than 2 days, I would have extreme abdominal pains, and would not be able to leave the house as that is how bad IBS affects me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Jeff9079(at)comcast(dot)net

Hi Jeff,
I don't know if you have searched on here or on the web re Turmeric, so I thought I would mention it to you as something you might want to look into. I was looking at the turmeric section on Earth Clinic for other reasons awhile back and thought I had seen something in relation to IBS. I also turned up quite a few things on a web search saying turmeric is supposed to be very helpful for IBS. I would read up on it as it is so helpful for so many things.

(I am fairly certain after having IBS for as long as you have that this has already been tested for, but just in case) - Another thing to consider is the possibility celiac disease / gluten intolerance. It can REALLY mess up a person. I have never been tested for it, but do know that my symptoms calm way down when I stay away from ALL wheat products for a few days. Wheat is in so many things one would never suspect, so it is a bit more complicated than just not eating bread, but is oh SO worth it.

You also might want to look into Kefir (hope I spelled that right) to replace good gut flora. Lisa has written extensively on here about it... And it sounds like a wonderful thing. Just some thoughts.

You have been on those meds for an awful long time. The thing with taking meds is that if they are not curing you, they are merely masking the problem... The problem is still there... Sigh. I hope you figure out the root cause (if possible) and fix it. Good luck to you!
