22 month old with no appetite and loose stool

Posted By Sybille (Billings, Montana) on 11/14/2014

Hi! I have a 22 month-old son and he was on both breastfed and milk formula for the first month. From 2 months until now, he only takes milk formula. My problem is, he's not eating that much lately and his stool is loose like a pureed avocado and the color varies from light yellow to dark brown. He's still very active but he was restless last night.

I have already informed his pedia 2 months ago about this and he prescribed a medicine for his gut flora that was taken for 5 days. His condition improved after that, but it returned after a week, will last for several days, then off again.

Can you give advise please. Thank you.

Dear Sybille,

I am wondering a few things.

Is your child otherwise healthy? It sounds as if the pediatrician was not very concerned?

Does your child drink this milk formula from a bottle or a cup? Will he take other things in a bottle or cup?

Is the loose stool different from his stools in the past?

Was he eating other things and then stopped?

One initial thought is that if the medicine for gut flora helped, you could get a probiotic and mix it into his formula. Or, if he would drink milk kefir that would be even better. You could make it thin enough to take in a bottle, I think.

I am hopeful that I and others may have some more ideas for you after we understand the situation a little better.

Hi Sybille, has the formular changed at all? If it contains "skim milk solids" or "whey" it may have to much lactose in it & possibly your little one has trouble breaking down larger amounts of lactose. If so mama~to~manys suggestion of kefir may help as it helps break down the lactose. All the best in your search. God bless
