In December of 2010 I had a beautiful Staffordshire Bull Terrier shipped to me from England. I have been involved in this breed for 20 years and have been looking for a nice red and white for about 4 years. I paid a very large amount of money for this boy. I finally found the perfect dog and had done all the due diligence of studing his line. He arrived healthy and absolutly everything that I had expected. With many of my dogs being in the top 10 in the country my expectations were that this boy could be number one. As he grew I was very pleased and never thought any less of him.

In February I took him in to the vet and had his vacinations and Rabies. Within a week I was noticeing him rubbing his eyes and face on the carpet and a large area on his back losing hair. I took him in to the vet and found that the area where his hair was falling out was right where he had recieved his rabie vac. We decussed options on how to help him through this and then I took him home to decide. The skin was becoming very thich where the shot had been administered and the thought was that the only way to stop the issue was to surgically remove that area of skin. As the days passed I saw that the area was getting larger and knew that we would have to act on it.

Then one Monday morning I woke up with him having cherry eye. I took him in right away and it was confirmed. We decided we could no longer wait and had surgery on the eye as well as the large area on his back (about the size of golf ball ) removed. The cherry eye was caused from the allergies and his rubbing his eye on the carpet, his background has no issues with allergies or any other health problems. So now I have a young dog that I had planned to have in the ring to win against all others who has an eye issue and a large scare across his back. I worked as a vet tech many years ago and do not ever recall seeing these issues from these shot, but then we used modified live vacines back then not the killed.

I love this little guy with all my heart, and still do even though he is not able to do what my original plans were. But I still have to keep him from reacting from the allergies. He still wants to dig at his eyes, rub his face in the carpet and dig at himself. He is uncomfortable becouse I did what the law says is the right thing and had him vacinated. He lives in the house and is never allowed to run free, so what is the chances of him ever coming in contact with rabies. This has changed my thoughts on Rabies vacines and I honestly do not know that I will ever be able to bring myself to give another one again!

My 3 year old chihuahua mix got his Lyme disease shot today. He usually is all happy and entergetic but now he is just laying down or sleeping and only gets up a little bit and walks slow and stiff. He doesn't really move his neck either. Also I tried to pick him up and he squealed. I was wondering if it's side affects from the shot, or maybe side affects of the actual disease? Can getting the Lyme disease vaccine put an animal at risk to actually get it? Thanks. I just hope he doesn't have Lyme disease. It's sad to see him like this..

I took my 3 lb 16 week old Maltese to get her last parvo shot. They gave her it and the rabies shot. She was fine until about and hour afterward. She yelped when I tried to hold her. I thought she was sore. Later she kind of drug her hind end and could not stand for me to touch her from the shoulders back. She would turn around trying to get to her tail. I now read she should not have got multiple vaccines, and that Maltese AND small breeds are most likely for reactions. UGH!

Our 5 1/2 year old cocker spaniel went into anaphylactic shock after receiving her annual rabies and distemper vaccines. She has had these vaccines without incident since birth. The vet is not sure which vaccine she reacted to d/t both being administered at the same time. Luckily, the vet responded immediately with proper treatment and although our dog also suffered delayed reactions, we were able to bring her home 8 hours later. She does not seem to have suffered any consequences as a result of the near death incident. The vet said she should not receive the distemper vaccine again, just the titre. She is "not sure" what we should do about the rabies vaccine.

hi I am reporting side effects that occurred after I vaccinated my cat (2nd time being vaccinated) she is a Siberian born Oct. 2nd 2009. She received her rabies ( purevax), distemper and feline lukimea. About 10 hours after the vaccines she was shivering, had a temperature, limping, lathergic, not eating, only wanting to sleeping and breathing rapidly.

My 1 1/2 year old Boston terrier has had an allergic reaction to vaccines 2 years in a row. Since she had it as a puppy, the vet separated the vaccines this year. She had the same allergic reaction as last year with her parvo vaccine. A few weeks later with her rabies vaccine, she had a sudden "acute toxic event" 2 days later. We don't know for sure if it was the vaccine, but I don't know what else it would be. She almost died. She had emergency surgery and lost 1/2 her liver and her entire gallbladder. I am terrified about future vaccines.

We took our 5 dogs to Petco, Love My Pet, March 27, 2011 for all their shots. Within 5 days the 1.5 year old great dane was dragging his back toes on his left leg. We went to our vet who told us "nothing wrong"; we went to a specialist within 2 days and his left leg paralyzed. Day 3 it had moved to the right leg and his front legs were wobbling and he had dropped 12 pounds! Any/all test were run that day BUT I was told nothing could be done until test results came back -- 7 days later!

Prior to the appointment I had searched the internet and my gut said it was the vaccines.... Specialist thought I was crazy but agreed to give him steroids because he was perplexed and said he did not know what else to do to stop the paralysis. Within 18 hours after the 1st dose he could stand; within 5 days (10 doses) he was running! All lab work and fluid analysis = nothing wrong! CT results stated torn achilles in the left leg (needed a splint) and right had shattered bone and he needed surgery IMMEDIATELY. Yesterday they called to say a sono gram showed nothing wrong with left leg so no splint needed BUT he still needed surgery on the right to remove the 6mm bone fragmnets. Did the surgery ---- no bone fragments could be found!!!!! Another CT was done. Today's results: left leg fine; no 6mm bone fragments in the right leg --- just swelling in the joints!!!!! He resumed his steroids again for another 5 treatments and then I believe he will be fine. Wonderful the internet gave me guidance BUT the 3 vets I saw will not put in writing it was the vaccines!!!! They cannot explain why a 142 pound healthy dog "went lame" within a week of the shots! They said off the record they agreed with me BUT could not put it in writing! AMAZING!

Thank goodness for Trupanion pet insurance!!!! Love My Pets --- horrible, horrible horrible! They just kept asking if I had read the care instructions and given dimetap!!!! They would not give me the manufacturer name/number or insert for the medications!!!!! They stated there was no recall BUT gave me the wrong lot# of the vaccines!!!! Nothing was sent to me in writing even though I kept requesting assistance! 3 times I called and was told to leave a message with the manager who would call me back.... No call was returned to me!!!!

I have learned so much and never realized how bad all the vaccines can be! PLEASE continue to self educate as the "industry and pharmaceuticals" protect their own!!!!!

I just found your site. For my children I am very pro-vaccine but I have had some very bad luck with my dogs. My 18 month old french bulldog had a mysterious back injury (ruptured disk in back) which led to paralysis while RUNNING, one day after receiving her annual vaccines, parvo etc. My second french bulldog, entirely not related, had the same mysterious back injury ONE DAY after her vaccines..

Everyone says coincidence. Come on.

We picked a pound puppy (mix breed), healthy he seemed and around 3-4 months old. Took him for his first check up and vaccination and all went well. Within 7 days he started to lose energy and within 24 hours was lethargic and not eating or drinking. Then the swelling began in his neck. He was diagnosed with puppy strangles which is a swelling and thickening of the lymph nodes. He didn't have open sores on his face, which could occur, but was so ill. He is a small dog (10lbs) and had baseball size swelling on each side of his neck. Steroids are the only treatment with antibiotics to cover him while on them. It has been difficult. The swelling on the side of his neck ended up being abscessed and broke... While discusting - at least it found relief for him. December 25, 2010 he got sick and it was on meds till mid February 2011. His abscess never healed completely till the beginning of March 2011. By the end of March the swelling is back on one side and the Vet doesn't seem optomistic. Vet didn't want more steroids but we are only keeping him on antibiotics. We shall see. I have been reading your articles and may try to remove the food and start giving him a natural diet. Never will he have another vaccination - this has been hell. There has been more then one occasion we thought we were going to lose him and the amount this has cost keeps growing. If anyone has any remedies for puppy strangles would love to know.

Hello, I just found your site after yesterday's extensive search about the pet vaccines.

My Charlie is 1 1/2 year old Maltese boy. He received his Lyme Disease vaccine yesterday. Last year he was absolutely fine, but yesterday he developed the aggressive allergic reaction within 20 minutes. I eneded up driving like a lunatic back to the Banfield Animal Hospital. He started to shake his head, scratch his eyes and ears and almost banged his little head against the car window as I was holding him to calm him down. I was terrified.

They administered 2 shots - Benadryl and some steroid one to stop the attack.

Till this day I didn't know there are 2 kinds of vaccines - core and non-core... I pay for his Health Plan with a Banfield Animal Hospital at Petsmart and on numerous ocassions I was looked down for asking too many questions or refusing some advised treatments, because I simply did not think he needed X-rays and tests costing over $600 after having a slight diarrhea.

They charged me another $95 for those 2 shots he was given and sent me home with a baby Benadryl.

After reading all those stories here - many heartbreaking - I decided not to give him any more non-core vaccines. I even read that Giardia vaccine is not effective against the actual disease and it is only in experimental stage.....!!! Now how horrible it sounds?

Are they experimenting on our pets with all those chemicals???

I think all drug companies do that - with pets and with humans as well.... trying all those new drugs, having all those ads on TV and then after few years you learn those so called miracle drugs harmed the liver, kidneys, heart or caused stroke, cancer or even death.

I want to thank you for creating this site and allowing us - pet parents - to share our stories and allowing us to warn others about the effects of drugs and vaccines. I hope many lives will be saved in a future because of warning and articles published here.

My heart goes to all families, that suffered through the ordeals and through the loss of their beloved family member.

Thank you again,

Katie & Charlie.

My dog is about 80lbs mixed breed. Boxer and maybe mastiff and something else. She received a rabies canine 3 yr (made by pfizer) and bordetella and dhpp vaccines at the same time. About 6 days later she became lethargic. 7 days later she refused to eat and started drooling slimy drool(she is not normally a drooler). That evening she had diahrrea that was slimy and yellow/brown. 8 days later she developed a high fever over 104 degrees F and her diahrrea became blackish and her eyes were bloodshot. She looked miserable and had her tail between her legs like she was in pain. My vet told me to give her 4 baby aspirin every 6 - 8 hrs and if no improvement or she worsened to take her to ER. Her temp got up to 105. 6 and I took her in. Her liver is swollen and white blood cell count is 1000 when I am told it should be 7000 or higher. Her protein in the urine is a little high. I forgot what they said about globulin.

So far she has shown no improvement and they want to try a plasma transfusion if this continues. I was told she has extreme abdominal discomfort and has to have pain medication. I don't think it was caused by anything she ate because I have a smaller dog in the house who has eaten everything she has and been everywhere she has and is not ill. The lot number was not listed on the receipt. Some sites say to report the side effects to the drug company? is this wise if I may end up sueing them?

My dog received his vaccinations last Thursday. Within 2 days, he became listless and disinterested in any activity. However, he seems to be fine now. Interesting to me was the greatly reduced heart rate (around 40 bpm for a couple days). It is now back to normal and he has his same high level of energy. I hesitated to get vaccines for a 10 year old dog, but I did wait three years. I see no reason why dogs should get them every 3 years and the research I have read in journals of veterinary medicine indicate that most dogs are over vaccinated. Now that he is a senior, I probably will forego them in the future. According to the literature, he should have lifetime immunity at this point. We don't vaccinate humans until the day they day, so why should we do this with our animals? My dog also has many food allergies and is on a limited ingredient diet.

I recently had 9 puppies vaccinated at 9 weeks old and within 2 weeks they all had severe bloody diarrhea. While in the vets a gentleman over heard my conversation and said he had his dogs booster done a couple of weeks previous and that she also had the same problem, then a friend had had her dogs booster done and again the same thing... Now one of the pups was diagnosed with giardia as was my friends dog, its seems too much of a coincidence that they all had vaccinations 2 weeks prior to all having severe diarrhea ( they were all fit and well before receiving the vacs) now I have been told that it is not possible to get giardia through the vaccine and it has to be ingested. Just all seems too coincidental to me... pups were labs, the guy in the vets was a lab cross and my friends dog is a parsons russell...

My chi died of vaccination side effects. It was obvious since the day she got vaccinated that something was wrong. She was vaccinated near her heart and NOT amazingly after that moment everytime I touched or picked her up she would cry or yell. I couldn't understand at first. I thought it wud go away. But nope it stayed like a dadly parasite lurking on my baby's body and waiting to finish her off. Finally 5 months later she had respiratory problem one night and then I got her X-Rayed and her heart was enlarged! I cried at the vet office. Then we did EKG and nothing (According to the other vet) was wrong but slightly abnormal. 1.5 months later her health deteriorated and she started losing weight despite good diet and she passed away after a slight stroke.

Plz. note that she had NO health problems until this vaccination. I shouldn't have got her vaccinated coz I know she would be alive today otherwise. She was my heart and soul and I clearly let her down and contributed to her death - killing her. So PLEASE other dog owners, once ur dog is vaccinated 1st year, NO NEED to revaccinate them.

I had adopted her from a shelter and she was with me for almost 5 yrs. In these 5 yrs, I gave her complete holistic care with 100% vegetarian homemade food and she thrived on it. Before when I adopted her her hair wud fall but not anymore. She ate lots of fruits and fresh veggies each day but its sad to say that of all things my stupidity and me going against my instinct and vaccinating her killed her. So plz. everyone as dog owners and dog lovers, say NO TO VACCINATIONS.

One of the puppies after having the vaccine now is not eating, drinking, and has diarreah and dry nose, and lethargic. We are taking Hershey back to vet today to see if this is a complication. Warning

My 3 years old Boston terrier got a booster shot of Vanguard 7 yesterday at noon. Within 1 hour he got small and big lumps all over his body and his face started swelling. He was very itchy and restless. Immediately took him back to vet for a antidote shot. His face swellings set back to minimum within 20 mins, back at home he was throwing up (it contained a little of blood)and drinking lot of water, the lumps did not disappear until late at night. He could barely walk, couldn't lye for more than few mins, most of the time he was just standing still and starring. He was still very latergic in the morning, but at least he was now able to have some sleep and rest. In the evening he got some appetite back, still has a swelling under his chin and is still far away from a playful dog he used to be. I'm afraid of possible side affects in the future... I will never ever vaccine my beloved animals again!

Rusty is our 14 year old Labrador/Cross dog who has annually received his booster vaccination. For the past four years we have put his bouts of lassitude down to old age but eventually realized that the weeks of lethargy were a result of the vaccination of Novibac Lepto 2 and Novibac DHPPi. We were devastated to think we'd been making him suffer. Our decision to cease the injections means he will not be accepted in kennels therefore we cannot travel abroad. However Rusty loves the campervan so we enjoy our holidays exploring the UK.

My 4 month old female GSD puppy had the rest of her vaccinations last week, started having neurological symptoms yesterday, but all labs are normal. She has not eaten anything unusual, and is having ataxia, not lethargic, eating food, but definately calmer than normal, maybe she is frightened of inability to walk straight?
The vaccinations she received are as follows:11/04/10, Lyme, Lepto, Rabies, Dhhp, no symptoms after those at all. 12/06/10, Lyme, Lepto, DHHP, hasn't had her HW prevention as of yet this month. She was given a total of 3 sets of vaccinations in the last 2 months. I've never had this happen before, maybe a little bit of allergic rxn but with benadryl and prednisone, 1 dose of each, it went away, none with this dog. I'm baffled because nothing else can be found. Please let me know; Rabies vaccine from Fort Dodge.

Michelle, we recently experienced the same thing with our 15 week old pup. When he received his second set of shots he was feeling well and was not eating a lot. Then about 3 weeks later he was better; and had put on 4 pounds. Our vet gave his third set of shots and then took blood and xrays of his hips because he was limping. The blood came back that his rbcs were low and wbcs high; so they put him on an antibotic.

Another week went by and I took him back to the vet to have a recheck on his blood work and he was back to being not perky, just laying around, could barely walk and I was feeding him daily with a spoon; but at least he got food in him. He was drinking and moving his bowels; which were soft. Our vet then put him on predinsone to kick up his rbcs and increase his appetite; but instead had the reverse effect, he didn't want to eat. The Predinsone did help increase his rbcs from the previous blood work and his wbcs went back to normal but then all of sudden his platletts drop; that was why she put him on predinsone.

Another week went by and he was no better, we finally took him into the vet again because on Saturday 12/4/10 I took him out and he did his potty and then fell over. I picked him up and call the vet right away. When we got to the vet she said, OMG he has a fever of 104.6 we need to put him on ice to get his temp down then she said, I am sorry but he will not make it through Sunday, we said what? What is wrong and she said, I have no idea, our little man was in pain when you touched him all of a sudden. We were then told she recommended we put him down to avoid his suffering.

We are still overwhelmed with this whole situation and still no answers. We paid $1200.00 US money to make him better and he died. I believe it was from his last set of vaccines that put his immune system in a spinal downturn. No one wants to be responsible, we CANNOT bring him back; but we did everything that we were told to do by the vet and we need closure as to why. Good luck on your journey of trying to find out, I wrote the manufacturer Merck; but I really am not expecting to hear back. Our little boy should have NOT died! Best of luck

About 7 hours ago both our Lhasa Apso's received the second shot of Lyme's vaccine. About 4 hours later the smaller of the two (he weighs 10 lbs.) began acting like he didn't want to move, he was shaking, no appetite, and was acting very scared. We contacted an emergency vet and they said they could not determine if there was something else going on with the dog without examining him. Prior to the vaccine the dog was fine. In researching the vaccine we found the dogs could suffer all the symptoms of Lyme. Our other Lasa who weighs 20 lbs. is showing signs of being tired and no appetite. We are concerned that they will be suffering with these symptoms for a long time had we know this we would not have gotten the vaccine. Our vet did not tell us what to expect, he told us he felt the vaccine was perfectly safe.

My siberian husky received her Lyme Disease and Rabies shots as scheduled (she was a few months old). Four days later she slowly started becoming paralyzed. She was diagnosed with Coonhound Paralysis. At one point she couldn't move anything, and could barely lift her head. She did eventually walk again, but her legs are crooked in the front, and weak in the back. The two companies involved settled with us, which covered the cost of most of the vet's bills, and Physical Therapy, but Luna will never be normal. I wouldn't wish this on anyone!

But a couple hours after that he started puking just his food. Then he didn't want any water or food-was weak. He slept through the night had a couple runny poos. This morning he started drinking again and even took a couple of bites of food at 3:00 today it will have been 48 hrs since his shot. He stopped puking but still seems under the weather. I had a 8 year old sheltie. She had continuous ear infections that were treated with steroids and antibiotics which made her comfortable for a week or two but the swelling, redness and pus from her ears never went away. The vet finally talked us into her having a ear canal ablation (removal of the ear drum) on her right ear. She was doing better and on her two week post surgery check up the vet gave the yearly shots to her. Two days later she was admitted to the University of MN hospital, placed in an oxygen kennel, IV's, and died 4 days later. She should never have received shots when her immune system was healing... The shots killed her. I currently have two shelties, they eat a raw diet, and only received their first baby shots. They will not get shots unless a titer test is done and the results are that it is necessary. I have read a comparison that by giving animals their yearly shots it is like giving humans their shots that are given their first year of life every year. It's sad to think that by trying to provide the best care for our fur babies we are slowly killing.

I have a 5 and a half month old Pit pup. She got spayed, her rabies shot, and her 3rd round of puppy shots all in the same day. When I picked her up they told me I could try and feed her at 7pm, and that she may throw up from the Anastasia. Well she didn't want to eat or drink anything that night and she was throwing up foamy substance. However, the next morning her face was extremely swollen she could barely open her eyes. She still refused to eat or drink anything. And now she was throwing up yellow bile everywhere. She had heavy breathing as well. She had trouble going to the bathroom, she would sit there and squat and nothing would come out. No bowel movements at all. I had to rush her to the hospital and they said it as most likely from the rabies vaccination. I was lucky to get her there so soon because they explained to me that it was a severe, life threatening case.

Vaccinations? do I let my cat go without it or with it. If they get rabies or distemper how long do they live. My cat was 1.5 years old and I took her to be vaccinated. My cat, the one good thing in my life I loved, died within 10 minutes from these vaccinations. Then I find out oh this happens sometime, thanks a lot for telling me that after the fact. These past few days have been the hardest of my life. So maybe one day rabies or distemper might have set in. But I know she would be here now if I hadn't have done it. She basically died for nothing and I'm having a really hard time with it. I'll never trust a vet again.

Jack & Honey are fine.

Should I take him to the vet?

We have taken our 12 week old lab puppies to vet for follow up booster shots. We have 3 puppies. One of the puppies after having the vaccine now is not eating, drinking, and has diarreah and dry nose, and lethargic. We are taking Hershey back to vet today to see if this is a complication. Jack & Honey are fine.

My shih tzu who is 6 years old had his distempter shot on Saturday. I tried to pick him up on Sunday and he yelped in pain and almost bit me which he has never done. He laid in my lap most all day and evening. Today is Monday and he hasn't gotten out of his bed yet. I am concerned about him.

I have a Doberman who is 6 weeks old I gave him his first shot myself. It seemed like 24 hours after the shot his poo got runny but was still eating and drinking water. Should I take him to the vet?
