Pet Rat Upper Gum Scab - Remedies Needed

Bunny B (a) on 04/12/2022

Pet rat question! She is roughly 6 months old. Seemed to quit growing literally and then 24 hrs ago I noticed a scab on her upper gum line. I noticed a scab or abscess right on her upper gum/teeth. She was eating okay but this morning she is really lethargic. Can I use Neosporin or peroxide?

She let me dab it with a warm rag but I wanted to reach out before I do anything else. It doesn't look pus filled and she doesn't seem to be slowing down on eating.

Hello I'm still looking for working methods for curing respiratory diseases / mycoplasma pulmonis. My rat sometimes make sounds of hard breathing / sniffing.

I was reading about BORAX and how it helps for rats with their respiratory problems .

Does anybody know the 100% safe dose for pet rats that will can cure those diseases.???

I know that people with less weight should take about 1/8 teaspoon per 1l of water but I don't know how is this safe for pet rats?

How to measure a dose for rats because rats can't handle one litre of water..?

I was searching for those information but couldn't find it.

I was reading about someone who succesfully cured respiratory infection with borax for a rats but I couldn't find it.

Is it safe to use the castor oil method on my rats tumor? If so, does it need to be diluted with another oil to make it less irritating?

Upper Respiratory Infection in Pet Rat

Jen (Sharpsville Pa) on 10/15/2013

My 3 yr old rat got a terrible upper respiratory infection a few days ago. She was on her last leg. She lost a ton if weight and quit eating and drinking. Everything I read said that there's little I could do for her. I didn't give up. I decided to make a medicine for her at home because I couldn't find a vet to treat her. I remembered reading about goldenrod tea for upper respiratory issues in humans so I gave it a try. I used about a tablespoon of dried goldenrod from my yard and steeped it for about 5-10 min and added 2 tbs of honey. I fed this to her through a medicine dropper every few hours for two days. Now she is running around and eating on her own. She has no more symptoms if illness at all. I also force fed her Peanutbutter mixed with honey as well. I'm so happy she pulled through. If I hadn't done this I'm sure she would've died two days ago.

Multiple Remedies for Pet Rats

Dianna (Austin, Tx) on 12/15/2010

Ratties respond very well to most of the remedies you would use for yourself. ACV on the back of the neck when lethargic works well; in fact you can use the ACV on the back of the neck whenever their immune system needs a boost. VCO given almost daily can really help ratties that have allergies. A couple of drops of GSE in their water bottle will not only sterilize the water but can also help prevent respitatory infections. Ear mites respond very well to castor oil inside the upper part of the ears and if very bad to garlic oil (from capsules the smelly ones lol). Mites in general can be killed by rubbing VCO or EVOO all over the rattie for a few days. For abcesses a drop of tea tree oil diluted in VCO or EVOO and rubbed on the spot will usually dry it up - however most abcesses run their own course and the rattie will take care of them without your help. For scratches, little wounds you can put a dab of Bag Balm on them or VCO - bag balm works good for this and it is not poisonous to them... (lol) I have used it on my lips off and on for years... And my ratties always love to lick it off... Hope this helps someone! I have had ratties for over 15 years and have a lot of experience with taking care of them holistically.

Questions About Hydrogen Peroxide for Pet Rat (New Pets Page Created)

Moira (Tauranga, New Zealand) on 06/03/2010

I adopted some pet rats, one of which has a severe respiratory problem. I have put her on H2O2 and I have a question. It is difficult to impossible to get her to drink it on an empty stomach. If not thirsty, they won't drink. I understand it needs to be without food. But if it is sweetened with a little honey she might be more inclined to take it.

My question: Will honey in the diluted hydrogen dioxide inhibit the therapeutic action?

She seems to be responding a bit but I could be more sure if I could give an effective amount.

As per instructions from a practitioner who uses it with humans, I am giving 50% food grade H2O2 diluted to 0.33%. That is 1 drop in 15ml water - a little under, but very close to the studied 0.45% that was successful with tumors.

Each rat then gets only about half a ml of this at a time. I try to give it to them from a syringe. It is not always successfully away from food.

Another rat arrived with a mammary tumor, (usually benign) and I am giving her H2O2 also (trying to).
