Metformin Side Effects

I took Metformin for three weeks for pre-diabetes. I had to stop, with my doctor's agreement, because I couldn't tolerate it.

Since then, my stomach is bloated and I have cellulite on my thighs.

I didn't have any of this before taking that awful Metformin.

What can I do?

Hi Marie-Cécile,

Diabetes, where low grade inflammation and insulin resistance are typically seen are strongly linked to cellulite formation, whereas Metformin is not.

Since Metformin is not a consideration for you due to your negative reaction to it, you might consider using berberine which works against diabetes, low grade inflammation and insulin resistance.

In human studies, berberine has been used at a total of 1500 mg total per day in three divided doses of 500 mg at breakfast, 500 mg at lunch and 500 mg at dinner. This may help you move from the prediabetic range to the nondiabetic range and may help to ameliorate the cellulite that has developed on your thighs.

Other ways berberine might help fight the cellulite is through improved metabolic function, helps to reduce triglycerides and cholesterol potentially impacting fat deposition and helps regulate glucose and fat which may also reduce fat storage. Berberine also works against organ damage to the heart, liver and kidneys caused by diabetes which can negatively impact all major organs as it advances.

Bloating is a common side effect of metformin, but bloating caused by Metformin usually stops when you stop Metformin. On the other hand bloating is also a common symptom of diabetes, which you are apparently in the early stages of. So again berberine is a good place to start and see how you do with it.

There are other supplements that can be taken to help reduce cellulite, but I am assuming working on the diabetes issue is your top priority and berberine will be a good place to start in that effort! It would be a good idea to make sure you tolerate berberine for at least a month before adding anything else to give berberine a chance and not cloud the picture with other things during this testing period.

Be sure and get your doctor's approval and supervision before starting berberine for your safety and to make sure it is compatible with all other medications.

Please keep us posted on your progress!

Look up videos of Dr Jason Fung, who is I think a Nephrologist. Well, Dr Fung, as he says, got tired of holding diabetic patients' hands only to watch them die. He has a Clinic in Toronto, Ontario, where he has cured diabetic patients (one on insulin for 20+ yrs) by fasting, under medical supervision. Diabetes can be cured and his videos (Dr Jason Fung) are well worth looking into.
