"Here is my story. We had a litter of 9 Labrador puppies. All had received one vax at around 14 weeks. After doing some research planned on giving another vax at a year. At 10 months one got sick. Initially we just thought it was something she had eaten. Testing confirmed it was Parvo.
Now all 9 dogs were housed together, ate from the same bowl, drank from a common bucket and played in the same yard. Obviously all were exposed.
Here is how we saved 4 who got really sick and kept the other 5 from being sick.
If you have multiple dogs, this may work for you too.
First find a vet that is willing to work with you. Some vets want to treat dogs like humans along with the associated costs. Unless you have lots of cash, treating multiple dogs can bankrupt you.Get your sick dog tested. This usually involves an office call and test costs. Now most vets will want to hospitalize your dog, give IV fluids, antibiotics and nausea meds. Very expensive, if you have many pets. Some vets offer an option of home treatment, that is what we did.
Here is what you will need from the vet. IV kit, needles and electrolytes in an IV bag. Electrolytes can come in 1 and 5 liter bags. If your treating several dogs get the 5 liter bags. Our vet added some antibiotics and B vitamins to the bag. The vet tech can show you how to do a sub cutaneous drip. The IV is the most important part of treating Parvo. Dogs dehydrate quickly with Parvo and that is usually what kills them. The antibiotics are for secondary infections.
So initially two of our girls got sick. We immediately started the IVs on them. Usually if they make it thru the first 3 days, they will be OK. We of course quarantined them, although the others were certainly exposed. You can treat several dogs from 1 bag of electrolytes. Just use new needles for each dog.
The other dogs were still all together. They were eating and drinking. We immediately added 1 tsp per gallon of food grade H2O2 to their water. 3% H2O2. We also put 500- 1000 MG of olive leaf in their food depending on their weight. We also added some grapefruit seed extract to their food. 3-6 drops. All three are antiviral.
We had two more dogs get sick and put them on IVs. All 4 of the sick dogs recovered and were eating and drinking after a week. 5 dogs never got sick. Once the sick dogs were eating, we added the olive leaf to their food too.
Two boys and two girls, all between 55 and 70 lbs recovered. Some lost a bit of weight, but gained it back quickly.
Dogs will shed the virus for near a month after recovery, so it is something to be aware of. Dogs will have immunity after recovery, but there are 3 strains of Parvo. Best to get a vax after they recover. We waited 6 weeks to vax them after the 4 were eating and drinking again.
All the best"
