Theresa

The wonderful Theresa from Minneapolis, MN has been helping pet owners and their beloved pets around the world on Earth Clinic since 2013.

About Theresa

Theresa from Minneapolis was born and raised in the inner city, always wishing she had been raised on a farm.

Her love for creatures great and small began at an early age, starting with caterpillars - which continues to this day, along with an interest in all insects and 'creepy crawlies'.

Theresa's interest in pet health started with a bird keeping hobby at age 14, where she learned from another hobbyist that the simple addition of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in a bird's drinking water kept fungal infections away; she was able to share this with her avian vet who in turn prescribed it to her own clients; Theresa was surprised to learn that she could teach her vet a thing or two. This important lesson - that each of us can be a teacher - was a turning point for Theresa, and  fueled  her quest for the knowledge held in lore,  and remedies passed by word of mouth. That quest for knowledge continues to this day, as new and old remedies alike are explored. She may not have experience with a particular issue, but she will research it to the best of her ability and share what she finds freely, in the hopes that you can heal or improve your pet's health.

"Hey Nicole!

If you are dealing with demodectic mange then you don't need to worry about the environment as far as contamination.

If you are dealing with sarcoptic mange then those mites can live off the host in the environment long enough to infect another host. If you are dealing with sarcoptic mange I would sterilize the environment in conjunction with the dipping protocol for Ted's mange remedy - and also use diatomaceous earth to ensure no mites survive off the host in the environment."

"My GSD has what I think is mange. I cannot afford vet for treatment. I've used Ted's remedy just now, and praying for Bruzor's skin to heal. I have a pool in my backyard, surrounded by grass. How do I treat the pool and yard for these mange mites? He swims in the pool everyday. Could this be causing the mange? Please let me know asap. I love my pup and I need advice!"

"Hey Aj!

When I see posts about mange from Florida my first thought is FLEAS and not mange; have you ruled fleas out?

The kind of mange your dog could catch from around the pool would be sarcoptic mange; these might hide out in bunny or squirrel poop or the live critters; do you see vermin in your yard, and has Bruzor caught any vermin? If no, then you might consider fleas, or a skin infection caused by a damp coat that doesn't get fully dried after a swim.

Ted's mange remedy will help in either case but if it is fleas you will need to treat your yard - consider a cedar granule type product in that case."

"My beautiful little terrier has just been diagnosed (skin scrape and biopsy) with demodetic mange. I don't want to subject him to the harsh toxins in mitiban or the invermectin so will be starting the Borax HP treatment. Thank you TED for posting it. Have also read that flowers of sulphur works well and wondering if I can combine the two? Borax/HP bath every 4 days and flowers of sulphur mixed with talc or neem/coconut oil every day. What do you think?"

"And one more question! Borax is. It in sale in Uk, just Borax substitute. I have ordered some Borax online - not Mule Team as they don't sell it here. It is 99.9% pure Borax. Will this be OK?"

"My poor 8 week old lab puppy is bombarded with what I believe is some type of mange. Itchy ALL over. Scabs and sores on elbows, head and belly as well as being very red. Hair loss as well. Her itching is driving us both crazy. Literally.

I got online to do some research and found Ted's cure. I have used it as well as Selsun Blue to wash her prior to treatment.

I do have to say this. I am on the fence as to whether the cure is going to work yet but the Selsun Blue is amazing. It took all the crusty crap and stuff off with first use. But when I applied the borax solution I could tell it must have stung because she was whimpering a lot. so I guess we will see if it works or not.

I did forget to add that Nyla has been to the vet and the vet it unsure of what it is. Skin scrapings didn't reveal the issue. I refused the harsh meds."

"Hello Mary,

My gut feeling is that you are not dealing with mange. If your pup's skin was responsive to the Selsun Blue, then you may well be dealing with a fungal infection on the skin.

If this were my puppy I would:

Feed only top notch groceries; NO brands of kibble that contain grains and corn.

Give a bath daily or every other day in the Selsun Blue until the skin is healed up or well on its way to healing. THEN I would switch to Ted's Mange remedy for 1 dip per directions, and see if that makes a difference at all.

Additionally adding 1 capsule Evening Primrose oil to the food am and pm may help with the skin.

I would also check with your breeder - are the litter mates of this puppy similarly affected? Share your knowledge - it could be another puppy in the litter has the same issue and it could be that owner has a remedy that is more effective, or has a definitive diagnosis for mange.

Please report back!"

"Would that be something you'd buy at a garden centers or online? Am I allowed to ask for a product name? I have coyotes., bears and foxes in my yard a lot and I do know they've left fleas. I have have also seen neighbor dogs with mites and mange."

"Hey Susan,

I think the best deterrent to fleas and ticks in the yard is a short cut lawn. Ticks stay to grassy areas, so a three foot border of sand or gravel between pet areas and woods is also a deterrent. The cedar granules product name can vary - research and see what ingredients agree with you. I honestly think the three foot gravel barrier combined with a citrus vinegar spray is the most effective. Make the citrus spray by putting all your citrus rinds in a gallon jug and fill with white vinegar and let steep for a few weeks/month, and then strain into a Hudson type sprayer and spray the gravel area. I don't use any 'products' on my fur kids, but I do bathe them and check them often for parasites. If you find fleas, give them a bath; if you find ticks dab with tea tree oil on a q-tip swab and wait no more than 10 minutes; then use a human comb to gently comb out the dead tick."

"I started Ted's mange treatment today and washed all of her bedding and toys with hot water. But what would you recommend for cleaning a carpeted floor? Thanks!"

"If your pool water has recommended level of chlorax in it, it would kill all mites that will be washed from your dog. But it also irritates the skin (usually GS have very sensitive skin), which makes skin more prompt to infections."
