Cayenne Gargle for a Sore Throat

Athena (Mount Dora, Florida ) on 02/25/2024

Last night I came down with a sore throat which I haven’t had in so long, I forgot what they felt like. My kids had sore throats last week so it is possible they passed it on to me. So last night I’m laying in bed, not able to sleep because my throat just feels so swollen, irritated and it hurt to swallow. That’s when I came onto Earth Clinic to see what other remedies there are instead of the common salt and water gargle. I came across the Cayenne pepper remedy which is funny. I just bought a ton of it wanting to add it to my food etc due to its great benefits for the blood. So last night I gargled some which gave me instant comfort. It burns a little on the tongue and lips but that’s it. It’s not too bad. I laid down and woke back up around 2a for my son. My sore throat was back and I couldn’t fall asleep. So I got up and gargled again. Finally I fell back to sleep until the morning. Morning came and I still had the sore throat. Not as bad as the night time but I choose to do the gargle again. That was my last time. The sore throat was gone within the hour after and has not come back. So amazing!!

Iodine and Merthiolate for a Sore Throat

Grammyp (Gaithersburg USA) on 02/11/2024

I'm 64, when I was a kid my mom would literally paint my tonsils with Iodine or Merthiolate...

While you write of Iodine painting the outside, she used her fingers and a cotton ball dipped in iodine, stuck her fingers down our throat(s), and quickly swiped around the Uvula. We gagged and it was over. Our sore throat(s) and any lingering disease causing germs were wiped out in a flash.

Question(s): Has the Iodine and Merthiolate available to our mother back in the 60's and 70's changed? Now I only find a tincture that has a warning "for external use only" which is higher in alcohol content than iodine and/or a tincture for thyroid with various inactive ingredients.

Does anyone know what the formulation was back in the 60's and 70's?

Iodine Painting Helping a Sore Throat

Iodine Painting

My daughter had a sore throat for two nights, so I painted her throat - she thought I was crazy, but then had instant relief! We left it on all night while she slept and she woke up perfect! My throat started getting a little irritated feeling the next night so I did the same, it's better, certainly not worse - probably could have painted certain areas a little more so I will try again tonight. Thank you!

Sore throat is due to microbe infection and virus infection.

Take citric acid as needed (multiple tablespoons) and make a cure of methylene blue for one week for example

Citric acid is for the microbe and methylene blue for virus

Interesting! A dash of Cayenne - and I mean less than a pinch! - in 1/4 cup hot water, cleared up a sore throat.

Tongue Stretch Helped Sore Throat

Homeschool Mom (Minneapolis, Minnesota) on 04/27/2023

Tried this while waiting for some tea to brew to help relieve my sore throat. I mostly tried it out of curiosity and didn't expect it to do anything. Much to my surprise, the stretch itself was a tad painful, like trying hard to stretch a tight hamstring. However, I gave it all I had and discovered after the stretch I could instantly swallow without pain. My overall sore throat pain reduced about 70-80%. Talking no longer hurts, either. I did a little quick research and discovered this stretch is part of the yoga move "Lion's Breath."

Hydrogen Peroxide for a Sore Throat

Better But With Side Effects

I had a terrible sore throat - hurt to swallow. Gargled and held half peroxide and half water in mouth a few times. It definitely got rid of the sore throat, but now have no sense of taste and smell.

Perhaps if I had diluted the peroxide more than I did would have been OK, but I'll not chance it again.

Rinsing the mouth (chewing the liquid) and gargling every few hours with Epsom salt and water helps relieve painful sore throat caused by Covid or other respiratory infections. Also swallowing a bit as well.

After visiting this site l tried the tobasco sauce for a sore throat. I have had covid for a few days and a severely sore throat unbearably painful especially when swallowing. I put 20 drops on a table spoon and bingo within a few minutes it took all the pain away. It does wear off after 40 minutes but it does give you some relief. Absolutely 1st go to for a sore throat. Amazing

Cayenne for a Sore Throat

I know you will be absolutely overcome with joy to learn that I am feeling better! ?? No?

However, down to business. The "Secret to a Happy Life Without a Sore Throat" I am now at liberty to reveal IS .........wait for it .... Chicken Noodle Soup with Cayenne Pepper or, as my better half would say, "Canine Pepper"! The results don't lie!

Having, in quest of appropriate home remedies and undergone numerous, unselfish, self-experiments on behalf of fellow (and fellowesses) EC, sore-throat- sufferers, tried several alternatives, including Manuka Honey lozenges and warm/hot water gargling, I now find myself unreservedly supporting the CNSCP remedy.

Yesterday, my can of 500 gm / one pound Chicken Noodle soup was decanted into a bowl and laced with a half teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper, stirred furiously and then split in half. Half went into the 'fridge for to-day and the other half was stirred again whilst being gently heated on the stove's top element until bubbles appeared, then removed and allowed to cool a bit.

Consumed whilst just hot enough to be tolerated, the initial shock of the CP gradually gave way to reluctant acceptance whilst muttering the mantra "It hurts, so, ipso facto, it must be doing me Good"!!

(Who was it claimed that "Whatever does not destroy me, makes me stronger"?) (Clue.. his name begins with an "N.."/ can't spell it! ).

Just two applications of the above protocol seem to have had the desired effect. I strongly suspect that I caught this malady from a cafe visit a while ago. Such misery from one innocent visit! I have always been susceptible to catching unwanted things from suspect cups BTW. Lesson for you too! Maybe take my own cup/mug next time and save the planet at the same time?

As a Certified Old Geezer, I am permitted to pass on a few of life's other hard- earned wrinkles on smoothing out the humps and hollows of one's daily toil.

For instance, now that our cold, windy, wet season has graced us with its presence, I am having lots of trouble with slugs and snails in our vegetable patch. Also, we are blessed with a thingy called a "Pear Slug/Peach Slug" which, I recently learned, is actually not a slug at all but a giant aphid! Anyway, whatever, they do a whole lot of damage but can be trapped quite successfully if one places a number of up-turned, coconut half-shells in between one's vegetables. I used to favour plastic pots and then switched to Terra-cotta/clay ones but these upturned half coconut shells are the bees' knees. Must check DAILY.

Again, there is a Chinese invention of a circular plastic protector for guarding against slug and snail attacks. It boasts an arching-over-outward-facing rim such that the critter can not negotiate upside down. Awesome!! Ingenious!! Works well and all these wrinkles tested by yours truly - I kid you not.

Next, if using a firelighter, I try to source an organic one (or as close as I can anyway). I have more success if I place it in the middle of four layers of newspaper. Seems to hold the heat better. When I was young a century ago, tramps in the park would keep warm under layers of newspaper.

Growing old is not for the faint-hearted but some of my wrinkles are useful ones!!

Cheers from Down Under

Cayenne for a Sore Throat

This is not one of my creations. I saw it here in Earthclinic and tested it, since I am a researcher. If you have sore throat, add 1/16th or 1/8th of a teaspoon cayenne, in a full glass of water and gargle. If it does not pass in first time, repeat in about two hours. It is really an amazing curement.

Garlic and Cayenne Extract Are the Best Cure for a Sore Throat!

Ria (Nevada) on 01/23/2022

I've tried a lot of things for a sore throat, but this worked the BEST.

One dropper (one squeeze) of garlic extract and one dropper (one squeeze) of cayenne extract in a spoonful of water. Gargle and hold back for 30 seconds to a minute, two to three times a day (more if you need it). This is also edible if mixed with more water, but I didn't have to do that. MAGIC.

ACV and Cayenne for Sore Throat

Everyone in the house was sick. I thought I had skated by this cold like illness, but I was wrong. I came to y favorite site Earth Clinic. Watched a video on the topic of colds plus sore throat. I followed the protocol: gargled with salt water and cayenne, used the netti pot with the same mix, drank a warm apple cider vinegar tea along with honey and cayenne before bed. Got up in the middle of the night to repeat. Continuing today, day two. The relief is remarkable. This same infection lingered with other family members for a week. I was able to cut brush in the yard and go about my normal daily routines. I still have mild cold symptoms, but the sore throat is gone.

Thank you, Earth Clinic, for an excellent, informative video.

Goldenseal for a Sore Throat

Neva (ME) on 07/12/2021

I use Goldenseal when I have a sore throat. My grandmother used to get it in powder. She would put a tiny bit into the end of a straw and blow it down my throat.

I use it differently. I take a Golden Seal Capsule, open it up, put it into a cup of boiling water and let it steep for ten minutes. I then pour it through a coffee filter and put it into a bottle with a dropper, and then use a dropper full down my throat.

I warn you that it tastes really bad, but it has always worked for me. You can also use this solution on a bad tooth. It will get rid of the infection.

One really important warning. If you are taking other medications, Golden Seal will rid your body of them, so don't use it if you are on heart medication or other life-giving medication.

Hydrogen Peroxide Gargle for Sore Throat

I've had a miserable sore throat from a sinus infection for TWO WEEKS! If I didn't have constant post nasal glop dripping down my throat I would be really concerned it was more serious. My only symptoms were sore ears and sore throat, with the drip but the sore throat has been miserable. I was hesitant to try the peroxide but was willing to try anything at this point. Tried it 15 minutes ago and got immediate relief. Tried a second time and feel better. I will gargle again this evening and will try the peroxide in my ears tonite. Thanks for the tip!

YES this does indeed work. I've been using the honey, lemon juice and cayenne pepper for 15 years now. A sore throat of course is the prelude to a cold and if you can stop it, then it either stops it from advancing all together or reduces the cold to a minor ailment without all the mucus buildup and the awful coughing and hacking, which during the present day COVID-19 pandemic, you don't want to be observed coughing in public. Put as much pepper in as you can stand as it will be more effective that way.

There's a wicked virus going around now and everyone I know is getting a sore throat that comes and goes for at least 2 weeks. I started to get a sore throat yesterday (Friday) and went online to find the best cure for it and found the cayenne remedy.Started gargling yesterday afternoon with cayenne, 1/8 teaspoon in water, and then last night before bed. No sore throat this morning. I am going to keep it up several times a day for at least two more days just to make sure.
