Fatty Liver Supplements - Questions for Art

Hi Art,

Thanks for the information about Astaxanthin.

After about a year of taking Nattokinase of 12,000FU (divided in3x4000FU/day), I was very surprised to see few days ago my liver enzymes to get very high, as well as the total cholesterol to jump from 250 to 307 in 9 months (with no changes in a vegetarian diet with milk).

Now I do not know where to go from here. I wonder - may be 3 times per day is bad idea. what if I take 12 000 at once and so on... Any word is appreciated!

Niacin for NAFLD

Niacin (Vitamin) B3 for NAFLD

Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, may help treat nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in a number of ways, including:

  • Reducing liver fat: One study found that higher niacin intake was associated with a larger decrease in liver fat.
  • Preventing and reversing inflammation: Niacin may help prevent and reverse inflammation in the liver.
  • Preventing & Reversing fibrosis: Niacin may help prevent & reverse liver fibrosis.
  • Reducing liver enzymes: Niacin may help reduce liver enzymes and C-reactive protein.
  • Lowering risk of mortality: A cohort study found that higher dietary niacin intake was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality in patients with NAFLD.

Niacin is a common vitamin found in many foods, including meat, fish, brown rice, bananas, and fortified foods. It has many functions, including converting nutrients into energy, creating cholesterol and fats, and DNA replication and repair. You will want to avoid sugars, corn syrup, processed foods such as flour & corn.

There are a few different kinds of Niacin: Nicotinic Acid (flush niacin), Nicotinamide also called Niacinamide and last, Inositol Hexanicotinate. Nicotinic Acid (Flush Niacin) will produce a flushing fever like effect that can last an hour even at small doses 125mg - 250mg may be too much for people to handle due to the heat / fever-like effects it has. I recommend taking very small ammont and working your tolerance up. You can use cold washcloth if flushing is too hot.

The second type of niacin, Nicotinamide/Niacinamide on the other hand does not produce the flushing effect and is reported to be effective.
The last type of Niacin: Inositol Hexanictinate may also have beneficial effects but I have found no studies backing its effectiveness for NAFLD.

The main caveat with using Niacin for NAFLD is that you can over do it. I would space out dosage and not exceed 300mg per day as higher doses have been reported to have adverse effects on liver. for this reason, I would definitely recommend trying Niacin as your last resort if other home remedies such as probiotics or lemon & apple cider vinegar water did not work

Choline for Fatty Liver Disease

I followed Ted's advice and took Choline, or you can take Lecithin, and my fatty liver marker disappeared after a 6month blood test. My cholesterol went down by 1 in 6 months and the Dr was so surprised he asked me what medication I was taking, he had never seen that in his 24yrs of practice, when I told him he didn't seem impressed, not a fan of natural medicine, thought it was down to food and exercise and just encouraged me to keep doing 'whatever' it was that I was doing lol... I didn't change my diet or do any exercise, so it is worth a shot.

Choline for Fatty Liver Disease

Addition to Art Solbrig's post about fatty liver disease:

On p. 320 of The Perfect Health Diet by Paul and SouChing Jaminet, hardcover ed. Dec 2012, it says, “Choline supplementation rapidly cured fatty liver disease. In a mere twelve days, supplemental choline can reduce liver fat from 15 percent to 4 percent.”

There are footnotes but you have to access them online. Notes may be found at www.perfecthealthdiet.com/notes/#Ch35. The note referenced is note 20.

  • Chapter 35 is about choline and folic acid. Most people should get choline from three egg yolks a day and liver once a week.

I believe I had read about choline as well in one of Robert Atkins’s books.

Astaxanthin Question for Art

linwik (wv) on 12/14/2022

Hi Art and thank you for this and all of your helpful articles over the years. So much appreciated.

Do you know if astaxanthin is a blood thinner? I ask because I had a spontaneous hyphema after starting to take this. I've stopped taking it but would like to again. many thanks.

Fatty Liver Supplement Questions for Art

Hi Art!

Such a timely article regarding fatty liver. I am struggling with this and want to focus in on solutions. Do you take melatonin during the day or only at night? What is the best E to take? I've taken this in the past but not sure it's the best form: Jarrow Formulas, Toco-Sorb, Mixed Tocotrienols and Vitamin E.

Also, do you take the 24mg astaxanthin all at once or split throughout the day? Do you think milk thistle and/or dandelion are good add ons?
