Baking Soda Not Alkalizing pH, Why?

Kelly (The Netherlands) on 02/21/2023
3 out of 5 stars

Baking soda is making my pH go down?? It was at 6,2-6,5 before. After taking baking soda (5-7,5ml 3-5 times per day) it's 5,5-5,9. How is this possible? I've had this experience multiple times. My diet didn't change. I always measure first thing in the morning. I'm taking so much I should easily be reaching pH 7 which is my goal.

Baking Soda for Severe Indigestion and Acid Reflux

Mark ( Queensland) on 03/05/2022
5 out of 5 stars

I have been using Bi-Carb regularly for about 20 years with good to great results, I get severe indigestion and Re-flux. Drinking alcohol, water, eating basically anything whether it is meat, wheat products, sugar products, if it enters my mouth it gives me indigestion and Re-flux. I'm not a glutton, in fact I eat very little, I am a T2 diabetic so I shy away from the sweets, and I mean anything sweet, no soft drinks, I eat a little fruit and probably 1 slice of bread per month, I do eat 1 biscuit per day with coffee for lunch, but that is my lunch.

I would say my worst "habit" is potato but even that isn't as much as it used to be. 3 glasses of beer per week is usual, 1 Friday night, 1 Saturday and the same Sunday, an extra one if I'm cooking a BBQ. My problems started with a dose of "Hydrogen Cyanide" poisoning while working as a plastic fabricator. Many Doctors and Nutritionists have tried to help over the last 30 years and all have given up.

I could go on forever on things that have gone wrong with my health, 5 years ago I had a fairly severe stroke which I'm still having problems with including Dysphagia which only added to my stomach problems, BUT where here to report on the side effects of what you Americans call Baking Soda, We in Australia call Bicarbonate of Soda or Bi-Carb. To me Baking Soda is a mix of Bicarbonate of Soda and cream of Tartar, a different product, so that may need checking out. I love Bi-Carb, I have 1 teaspoon in water (since 2008 we have used distilled water) I use that 3-4 times per day (mix a 250 ml glass and drink 1/3 - 1/2 and leave the rest to have if and when I need it next.) and as I said that happens multiple times every day and sometimes at night also. I carry a small container with me at all times as the indigestion can be uncomfortable up to debilitating. I used to have a heaped teaspoon in a glass and drink the lot... I'm not sure if my stomach is improving or it's just my effort to use less, but honestly, I have never ever had a problem taking it internally or using it externally. (That's another story.)

Use baking soda to clean your stove top. I had bought a new stove, white and was told to keep it new in appearance and clean without scratching to clean with baking soda. Worked wonderfully, just sprinkle on and clean with water and rag. My stove looked new even years later when I sold it.

I used a mix of baking soda and water on my face for blackheads. Two days later I now have dry rash marks on my skin. So warning. I'm not sure when my skin will restore itself.

I used baking soda as deodorant and had a scary looking purple rash, no itching or pain, I had breast cancer so you can imagine how I felt when I saw this, stopped using it and after a few days I was back to normal.

I recently tried baking soda under arm as a deodorant and I gotta tell you, it is fantastic. If I knew about this years ago oh life would have been so much better as I had struggled with commercial deodorants that didn't contain aluminum, which were hard to find in the past and they don't work ANYWHERE as good as baking soda. Just one point - I apply the tiniest amount to dry underarms. I don't use water. It lasts for days I tell you! An absolute god send!

Sodium Bicarbonate

Ali (Wales) on 04/03/2016

I have gastroparesis so food stays in my stomach considerably longer than normal. Taking sodium bicarbonate at any time after meals is pretty risky for me so if I do take it, it's usually first thing in the morning.

Better But With Side Effects

I was recently found to have BASAL CELL CARCINOMA on my nose. The day before Christmas 2015 had a biopsy which showed cancer cells. I treated it 50-50 with baking soda and coconut oil daily, covered with a small plaster.

Each evening, I cleansed it with APPLE CIDER vinegar and applied an antibiotic cream to promote healing.

Febuary 15th 2016 had a piece removed for testing and there was no CANCER there. Unfortunately, the hole left in the side of my nose is now being reconstructed, Hopefully worth the pain to prove it worked.

Baking Soda Teeth Abrasivity

Myway (Usa) on 01/31/2016

In an effort to stop the misinformation about the abrasive nature of baking sodan on teeth, I found the research data on the RDA (relative dental Abrasivity) for common dental toothpastes and baking soda. From this chart, it can be assumed that baking soda is greatly LESS abrasive then everyday commercial toothpastes with a rating of "7." Here is the link....

http://c2-preview.prosites.com/131248/wy/docs/131248_rdh sheet.pdf

Some person on this site had stated that baking soda was abrasive to teeth......grrrrrrr. The studies are clear...it has low abrasivity!

Let me go brush my teeth.....with my baking soda, coconut oil, frankincense tooth polish - diy of course!!!!!

Baking Soda for Alkalizing

Hisjewel (America, New York) on 12/26/2015

Baking soda is a quick heal for me when it comes to alkalizing. However I just realized the sharp stabbing pains that I get on the sides and the top of my feet which I thought were nerve pains were caused by the baking soda.

I did eat quite a bit of sweets yesterday and I wanted to protect my body from a possible UTI, so this morning I put about a tablespoon ( I know, that's a lot) of baking soda in a cup of hot water and add a tablespoon of molasses and drank it. And the pain that was seemly along a nerve line started shortly thereafter. Now I am about to drank some extra water to tone that down.

Have a great day!

Baking Soda Bath for Sickness

Mama To Many (Tennessee, US) on 03/07/2015

My six year old had a stomach virus this week. He is normally a high energy guy and was down for days. None of our usual "go-to's" for stomach viruses were seemed to knock it out. (Turmeric, charcoal, peppermint, black tea, Apple Cider Vinegar, essential oils.) Perhaps he would have been worse without these things, but I was surprised he was down for so long. I offered him a baking soda bath a couple of times, knowing it helps one of his siblings to feel better for at least a while whenever she is sick. Finally, yesterday, I told him (kindly) that he really needed to try a bath. I made him a comfortably warm bath with a cup of baking soda and 1/4 cup of Epsom salt. (With the diarrhea, I didn't want to give him to much magnesium (Epsom Salt), but thought he probably needed some! ) He played in the bath for 20-30 minutes. He was perkier when he got out. He ate dinner. Today he is back to himself and even wanted to take a little hike with me.

Baking soda or epsom salt baths seem to always give at least temporary relief to acute sicknesses. Sometimes they seem to be what is needed for the patient to turn the corner. I will make a bigger effort to try that earlier in the game next time around!

I have suffered from rls for 10 years. I got tired of taking more and more prescription drugs and was getting rls even with the drugs.

I was amazed when I found, after looking at this helpful site, that 1/4 Tea spoon of bicarbonate of soda made into a paste and rubbed onto my legs took the rls away immediately.

Baking Soda for High Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure

Miles (Canada) on 12/24/2014

All Baking Powder now is aluminum free. Baking soda is also a remedy for high blood pressure and cholesterol. Cholesterol is caused by inflammation which causes all our problems like arthritis, Gout, fibromyalgia, Cancer and on and on. The inflammation gets into the wall of the artery and starts to wear it thin so the Cholesterol does as it is supposed to by rushing in to repair it by building it up again. If the inflammation stays in there, then the cholesterol over compensates and then can become a blockage but it is all about inflammation.

High blood pressure is the same, raised by having too much inflammation in the body. No B.S. will not raise the blood pressure because it says sodium on it. Your body (kidneys) already makes the (sodium bicarbonate) Baking Soda but as we age or some bodies in general quit making enough of it to keep us healthy with a good PH level in our blood. I used to be on all the meds. and after taking this and apple Cider vinegar (organic) I went back to my Doctor and he could not believe I was the same person. He took me off high blood pressue and the Cholesterol pills. I have never felt better. These products are amazing God given. Your body was meant to heal itself if you give it the right things. As you start this check your blood pressure daily and see your Doctor before quiting your medication as I am NOT a Doctor but this has worked wonders for me.

Re: Baking Soda for Cleaning Teeth

Mama to Many (Tennessee) on 06/14/2014

I have been using baking soda to clean my teeth for several months. I like it better than any other natural solution I have found so far. I dip my toothbrush into the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and add a drop of peppermint essential oil. I brush gently with a soft bristled brush. My mouth feels very clean when I am finished.

I seem to have read in places that baking soda may be hard on the teeth. I asked my dentist his opinion of baking soda instead of toothpaste. He said that it is what people used to use and that he thinks it is a good thing to do. He said that he does not think it is too abrasive for the teeth. He also said that since cavities form in an acid environment and that the baking soda will create a more alkaline environment, that baking soda should be helpful in avoiding cavities.

My mother used baking soda and peroxide for years as her only "toothpaste" at the recommendation of her periodontist! Mom had problems with her teeth for years and worked hard to keep them. (She was in a car accident when she was 6 that seemed to affect her teeth her whole life.)

Perhaps some will find baking soda to not work well for them. I am not suggesting this is the best thing for everyone. It has just worked well for me and I thought my dentist's opinion made sense.

This is a pretty neat dentist, by the way. He is not a natural or biological dentist. He is in a very small town often serving the poor. By what he charges he is obviously not in this for the money. Though my children have had well water since we started going to him, he never suggests flouride for them. He seems to just want to help people keep their teeth healthy. He has really been a blessing to our family when we have needed dental help or advice.

It has helped me better than anything with my skin issues, and there is no comparison in how I feel. It seems to help me with all of my food allregies too!
