That's simply not true. Any type of vinegar will work. It's the acetic acid in the vinegar that is responsible for it's benefits, not the brand or type of vinegar. In fact the study done in 2009 was in Japan, where they don't sell that 'name' brand ACV.
The problem some people are having is because they don't take it with water, BEFORE meals. They're taking it after meals, and sometimes with honey...
