I found this web page detailing the procedure:

DMPS is known to cause severe problems for people, particularly irreversible nerve damage. To chelate out mercury, lead and some other toxic metals, the best known protocol is the one that Andy Cutler devised. He has a ph.D. from Princeton in Chemistry, was poisoned himself and discovered the pharmacological effects of different substances, based on the half life of chelating elements in the body. The reason this is so important is because when mercury is moved around, it cause havoc. I had 13 almagam fillings, plus 2 gold crowns, (which is a big no-no, even for dental text books--and funny the dentist who did this taught at the dental school in Philly--obviously didn't read the textbook! ). In any case, I had all these removed, followed Cutler's protocol and have had many many problems go away, including problems I didn't think could be connected to Mercury. His protocol is the ONLY safe way to get rid of mercury; it works. (plus, he's not trying to sell anything. The protocol is available on the web, even if one doesn't buy his book). In a nutshell, the protocol is:
alpha lipoic acid 50mg- MUST BE TAKEN Every 3 HOURS, even at night. For 3 days on, 4 days off. I've done his protocol for 2 years now and it really works, safely!

Cutler's ala detox protocol ruined me for a year (I was taking 10 mg of ALA every 3 hrs)... The ALA makes me want to hit my head against the nearest wall and bite my own hand... And I dont have ocd or a history of those behaviors! It obviously mobilizes mercury, which is great, but it can mobilize too much too fast, and overwhelm the body's elimination channels. That's when it really damages your body, and should be avoided (many people have had similar reaction to DMPS, might I add). although that is true for any detox protocol...
Since I already have so much mercury in me, I am very wary against any strong detox due to having such negative reactions consistenly in the past.. I have found the most relief by improving my own glutathione levels (zinc, selenium, vit c, green tea, dark roast coffee, avoiding excess environmental toxins (other than the caffeine), green-coffee enemas) and improving my ability to excrete toxins (charcoal capsules with coffee, high fiber diet when not taking fat-soluble vitamins, etc). I also have found gentle relief by using low dose (250mg) ca-na edta suppositories every other night. Nutrition wise, I eat a Weston Price style diet (traditional foods), and thrive on that.

Also, increasing the body's own production of glutathione is key, by taking supplements and eating foods and herbs that increase glutathione production such as broccoli sprouts, chlorella, magnesium, selenium, zinc, iodine, etc.
