Hi there!

My 82 year old mother in law fell last fall. She cut her forehead above her left eye. Subsequently her eye got very infected. She ended up in the hospital on IV antibiotics. Ever since then, her eye has not been "right." (No pun intended.) She fell shortly after the eye incident and broke her shoulder and femur and was in a nursing home and rehab for months. We moved her in with us from the nursing home 2 months ago.

Between her dementia, all the distraction with her broken leg, and then Covid concerns (we weren't able to see her for 3 months), the eye issue became secondary, to say the least.

I took her to the eye doctor a couple of weeks ago to get her glasses prescription updated. That is when I realized she basically can't see out of her left eye because it is so blurry. Nothing was immediately apparent to the optometrist. He referred us to an ophthalmologist. He said she had some scar tissue from a previous cataracts surgery and he used a laser to remove it and prescription steroid eye drops. Well, it didn't improve her vision at all. And the eye drops made her eye feel "heavy."

Her eye does itch and she rubs it a lot. It gets red and irritated. I always assume its some sort of infection and I do use colloidal silver gel on it. One dose of that topically and it usually clears right up, but its temporary.

Today I tried one drop of Visine allergy eye drops. Again, that seemed a temporary fix to the red and itchy eye.

But nothing touches the blurry issue. I could take her to another doctor, but she is in a wheelchair and has COPD and she is a high risk for Covid. I really prefer to minimize taking her out.

I thought I would throw this out there and see if anyone has any ideas for what this could be and what I might do for her.

She reads a lot and does word searches. Her eyesight is very important to her. Its one of the few things she has left!

Thanks you guys!

Hi Mama to Many -

I have a few ideas that may help.

Is your mother-in-law taking B12 supplements? A deficiency in B12 (common in older folks) can sometimes result in blurry vision. A liquid B12 (spray or drops) would be easily assimilated.

The other supplements I would look into for eye health would be Vitamin A (not beta carotene because some people can't convert it to Vitamin A - especially those with hypothyroidism), a good fish oil, B-Complex along with the B12, zinc, lutein and zeaxanthin, Vitamin E and Vitamin C.

Special supplements formulated for eye health would have most of these.

The other thing would be warm compresses - that may help with the itchiness. There are eye masques (Amazon has them) that emit gentle heat (used mostly for dry eyes) but it might relax the eye and help with the blurriness.

I find using a humidifier daily helps with tired/sore eyes.

It sounds like your mother-in-law has had quite a few trials and tribulations but fortunately she is with her family to help her through them.

I've enjoyed your posts over the years, Mama to Many. They always are so kind and helpful.

I hope others on Earth Clinic can chime in with different answers for your mother-in-law. The answer must be out there ...

I wish you and your family all the best. Take care!

Hi Mama to Many,

I have had an irritated eye that would get red, itchy, and felt like something was stuck in my lower eyelid. I tried colloidal silver and a weak solution of Lugol's iodine. It somewhat helped but my eye still felt irritated and looked red. I put a big drop of castor oil in my eye and that did the trick! However, a couple of months later when the same eye bothered me again, I used the silver to make sure there was no infection, and followed up with the castor oil thinking it would solve the problem like last time. However this time it didn't work, and for several days my eye grew more itchy and red. I think it may have been an allergic reaction or something.

Anyway, my husband recommended I collect my morning urine (mid stream) and put that in my eye. He used it to clear up a bad case of pink eye in a day or 2. I collected my urine and soaked a cotton Q-tip bud in the urine, and then swiped it inside my eye. Felt so good that I then went ahead and used a dropper to put drops in my eye while pulling down the lower lid where I felt the most itch and burning. It complete eliminated all of the itching and irritation, and after an hour when I check again my eye was no longer red. I've now gotten in the habit of collecting my urine each morning in a little jar to have on hand “just in case! ” I ended up needing it again a few days ago... and as soon as the itch flared up in my eye (which I believe was because I put powder on my face- something I don't usually do unless I'm going somewhere for the day...) I applied the urine and it was sweet relief. I don't know if it will help with the blurry vision, but I certainly don't think it would hurt to try. I believe it's an old folk remedy.

I have heard that urine is sterile until it exits the body. ( I haven't researched this at all.) I do wonder if keeping it in a jar is a good idea? Might it begin to decay or deteriorate? Somehow I think that fresh might be best- and it's always available!

I heard a video from a Doctor who says urine is used worldwide but, in the states, it is frowned upon. It contains stem cells. When we're a fetus he says we feed and bathe in urine. Urotherapy is the name it is quite amazing who would have guessed? Research the word and you will come across his videos.

MtoM,

The fact that the colloidal silver clears it with one application and then it comes back, suggests that continued applications are needed. Remember, CS acts similarly to a broad spectrum antibiotic and whenever a doctor puts you on an antibiotic regimen, it is never for just one pill or one day, it is for a full series and in this sense CS and antibiotics are similar. CS is potent, but not that potent that it can knock it out in just one or two treatments and each time you do a single one dose treatment you run the risk of the pathogen developing resistance to CS.

Many people think that pathogens can not develop resistance to CS, but there are already bacteria known to be resistant to CS.

Hi Mama,

You may consider giving "Ancestral Supplements" a try. You do not need to take the full 6 capsules, I am doing 2 caps a day for the one I am using. It is not the cheapest product but sure is done the right way. They have a "like supports like" "nose to tail" approach to helping heal the body. They do have eyes. I and my fur kids are taking a supplement which is doing us well, even my CKD fur kid. You can go to their site which has a wealth of information, email with questions and you will get an answer back ( customer support is over the moon great) they also sell on Amazon. Something to check out. I wish I had known about them when a family member was in much need for this type nutrition. Hope you find the help you are looking for, where ever it may come from. Stay well.

Dee

I had some blurry eye problems, here is my 2 cents:

Colloidal silver kills most all pathogens but is flushed out in 15 minutes. Reapply every hour.

If she also has dementia then probably a systemic fungal issue along with other infections that are hidden. The first thing I would try is 1 to 10 drops of methylene blue, every morning. CHEAP!! It is sold as aquarium treatment use 2% drops. Very anti-fungal and very antioxidant, helped my vision when nothing else was working.

Careful, it stains everything.

Very messy if you spill it. and turns your mouth blue for about an hour. You will even get blue pee, not to worry it is not a problem. It should also help dramatically with her dementia.

Hi Lenny, how do you use methylene blue? How much, for how long, and when to take it? Thank you, I'm very curious about it.

I get itchy red eyes each spring and fall. Nothing stops the itching, and I have tried dozens of remedies, but a cold cloth held on the eye off and on til itching stops. Hope this helps.

I got pink eye this year followed by an infection. For the infection I found this product on amazon with hypochlorous acid for eyelid cleaning - you can search. I don't think I can mention products here. Anyway it got rave reviews and cleared up the eye infection within days, got rid of the blurry gunk, and soothed the dry eye. I don't know if this will work w/your mom's condition but its worth looking into - very easy to use :)

Hi Mama.

She is 82 old with dementia? Sometimes is more important to take something out of the body then to bring something new . I started detoxing with Pure Cholestyramine powder and Psyllium husk fiber. Cholestyramine is good to bind Mold toxins. Dr Shoemaker-protocol for mold. Actually, isn't only Mold but also other toxins floating in your body( use of cosmetics, environmental crap etc).

My morning blurriness disappeared, even if I am dehydrated a little. Also my body is overloaded with heavy metals and Oxalate crystals which travel to eyes to( itchy eyes). I have enough material for new book. Dementia is sign that body is full with blockades because of toxins. Detoxing needs to be started when you are 20 years old.

In Germany now, 50-60% of people have some problems with detoxification genes, even if both parents have intact genes. Cholestyramine is nasty and expensive. Blend of seaweeds is better. Zeolite Clinoptilolite for metals. Only highest quality. Actually, blurry eyes symptom first disappear of all nastiest problems. Lymph massage and vibration plate 15-30 minutes. Non emergency and non preventive medicine doctors deserve place in hell.

I have used colloidal silver (not gel) successfully for my family members' eye issues, as well as my pet's eyes issues for years. If you use it, make it a higher ppm like 30 or 40, and spray it on rather than drop it in. This way she can easily do it herself and it will not only cover the outside but get in the eye too. Once is not enough; you need to keep it up for about 3-4 days, about 3-4 times a day. If it's an a pathogen, it should be better within that time.

Dear Mama to Many,

I forgot to include another suggestion- cold tea bags. Brew a cup of black, green, or chamomile tea. Once cool, use the tea bag or refrigerate it in little plastic bag. Place the tea bag (make sure it's still plenty wet with tea) over the eye. Lay down with the bag over the eye for at least 10-15 minutes. Very soothing and can help rid of any infection or irritation.
