Natural Remedies for Snoring

Oct 08, 2017

Snoring can often be treated using a variety of methods including bed arrangement, sleep positioning and food intake. Natural supplements are also effective for treating the condition.

What is Snoring?

Snoring is defined as the hoarse, harsh sound that is made when the breathing passage is partially obstructed in some way when an individual is sleeping. Symptoms vary depending on the cause of snoring but include excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, sore throat, restless sleep, gasping or choking, high blood pressure and chest pain. Mouth anatomy, alcohol consumption, nasal problems and sleep apnea contribute to snoring. Many individuals view snoring as nothing more than an embarrassing sleep condition; however, snoring is often indicative of other more concerning health conditions.

Natural Remedies for Breathing Irregularities during Sleep

Treating snoring and other breathing irregularities present during sleep is important to prevent more progressive conditions. While a variety of treatments can be used, natural supplements are among the most effective and least invasive options. Apple cider vinegar, coconut oil and eucalyptus oil are three treatment options that have been used with the most success.

Apple Cider Vinegar

As imbalances in the metabolic systems of the body are often responsible for the onset of snoring, balancing these issues can eliminate the condition. Apple cider vinegar works to regulate the pH level of the body and prevent additional imbalances. The tonic also prevents nutritional imbalances as it carries a plethora of vitamins and minerals in it.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent. Applied to the nostrils at bedtime, the oil works to eliminate inflammation in the nostrils and nasal passages and reduce snoring. The oil also eliminates nasal congestion by reducing infection.

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil also serves as a natural anti-inflammatory agent. When applied to the nose, the oil reduces swelling in the membranes lining the nostrils and nasal passageways. This reduction in inflammation effectively treats symptoms of snoring and nasal congestion.

The hoarse, harsh sounds associated with snoring can be agitating to a sleep partner and embarrassing to the affected individual. The condition can also cause sore throat, dry mouth and a variety of other conditions. Effective treatment options, however, can eliminate the condition entirely.

I'm an acupuncturist studying to be a naturopthy.

My slim husband is pretty robust and not very interested in health. He's slim and fit, eats crap, drinks a fair amount and when he started smoking again he started snoring heavily waking me about 9 times a night where i'd have to push him onto his side.

So he's not good at sitting still for the acupuncture, so I did three things. Bought one of those spray's full of essential oils (from boots) for your throat. Massaged the pads of his thumbs (thenar eminance) a few mins each, very basic up and down rubs anyone can do.

And lastly made my own cheapie acupuressure thing. In boots the ring is 50 bucks or something crazy

Just get any bandage, put a few grains of rice on it and stick it at the base of the inner baby finger (just above where it joins the finger). that's it.

No snoring. Tedious a little though as somehow I have to do the little hand rub thing every night and not him. Even thought it's simple. Bah

But I shouldn't complain he's fab in every other way! :)

Good luck!

Hi Dublinanne,

Thanks for your wonderful feedback about snoring. I do snore very heavily and would like to try what you have said. Just want to know why to apply rice in the bandange and stick it at the inner baby finger ? Should it be right hand or left hand? Where can i find the spray's full of essential oils in Los Angeles ? what is the content of the oil?

Thanks a lot. I want to try this as my wife is fed up with my snoring.

Try not to have dairy before bed (about 5 hours or so) Dairy makes mucus and mucus can cause snoring.

Bed positioning. Sleep position. As in what is your sleep position based upon feng shui on year of birth. I tested it using sleep talk recorder by sleeping in the opposite head direction and recorded snoring. Just saw a television commercial wearing something that explains why snoring occurs. Earth energy pressures may be the reason. Hope partners can arrange a solution. Its kinda a sad thing. So is this the bed positioning, sleep position remedy suggested?

After hitting menopause, I began snoring, which is something the doctors seem to expect. I had a turbinate reduction a few years ago, after trying several different medications. That helped for a while. Then, it started again. I was tested for allergies, but there was nothing significant. I covered my mattress and pillows with high-end protectors in case it was dust mites I was inhaling. I was still snoring. I researched several different ways to drink ACV, which stopped my snoring, but I really didn't like the strong flavor. In fact, I eventually stopped drinking ACV altogether. As a result, I have been snoring for the past few weeks (again! ) so when a co-worker went on and on about how great Switchel tasted, I decided to make some and, lo and behold, it DOES taste wonderful! I drank some yesterday morning and last night and...voila! No snoring last night, much to my husband's joy! I love this stuff so much, I'll be drinking it morning and night!

The recipe calls for 1/3 cup of ACV (always with the mother), 1/2 fresh lemon, 4 TB of honey or Agave (I used stevia), 2 TB finely grated fresh ginger, 1 cup of spring water and 1 cup of lemon-flavored seltzer water.

Put it in a lidded quart jar and leave it overnight. To drink, just pour 1/3-1/2 cup of mixture in a 10-oz glass and add enough lemon-flavored seltzer water to top off the glass. It is absolutely awesome! I have been substituting flavored seltzer water for soft drinks for a while now and I'll be trying other flavors than lemon in my Switchel.

Just make sure the seltzer water is carbonated spring water with natural flavors, nothing artificial added. Bon appetite and bon voyage to snoring!

My husband has a legendary reputation for his snoring. We have been taking a daily dose of ACV for a few months now. His snores have been reduced to quiet breathing from the Earth-shattering events that used to drive me to the couch. Yeah! for ACV.

Hello, after suffering the last few months with constant congestion both in my sinus's and my upper chest I checked myself into a hospital. After being poked and monitored for 3 days they discharged me after filling me with the same off the shelf Mucinex you can buy yourself. Of course after a day I started feeling bad again as the drug wore off. Out of desperation I turned to the Internet as I felt I was suffocating from the congestion. I found this website with all the testimonials on the wonders of using ACV. I went to the local market during lunch and bought a bottle of Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar...for $3 I'd take a chance...why not? That evening (four days ago) I started taking a tablespoon of ACV in a coffee mug I filled with water. In an hour my sinus's started feeling clearer. I had forgotten I could breath through my left nostril. I started drinking my "tea" in the morning and evening. Well, now its been 4 days and my chest is starting to clear also. Just yesterday I was still having the chest constrictions but today I feel great. I'm anxious to try the natural unfiltered ACV when and where I can find it. Also interested in adding local hometown honey if I can find it as I have read about the benefits here also. Now, I need to say that I'm an old crouch, 57 years old, and set in my ways. But I have to admit to you all that this has helped me. No voodoo magic stuff for me. Try it. I did and I'm happy. And the wife is happy too! She says I haven't snored in the three nights I've tried this. Of course I didn't think I ever snored!!

Switch to organic raw unfiltered ACV with the Mother and it will do so much more for your health than just snoring. It will help with allergies, your body's detoxification processes, digestive and immune system just to name a few.

I am amazed to see the fast active ACV and its health benefits. I have been using ACV for the last 3 weeks. I have lost around 8 pounds till today, my BP is getting well controlled around 110/70 and oily skin is natural looking w/o any skin eruptions, etc. Overall I feel young and mentally sharp at the age of 55. I also found something astonishing and require verification from others. I found and, as reported by my family, my Snoring is missing now a days!! Really ACV is an Amazing Drink. Thanks

When I found this website I was suffering from acid reflux and GERD so bad that every night's sleep was being interrupted. I even stopped eating dinner for about 2 weeks hoping to offset an attack. I was already on medication for high blood pressure and was refusing to take the purple pill for the reflux. I found this site and immediately thought about Dr. Atkins little refered to book on methods of weight loss and gastrointenstinal health that he put out long before the Atkins diet. It was a regime of vinegar and olive oil (tablespoon of each) before or after each meal. This could not have been a coincidence. So I got some ACV and proceeded to drink 1/4 cup acv in 8 ounces of water either right after my evening meal, or just before brushing my teeth for bed. I have slept like a queen for 2 weeks. My snoring is normal instead of ground shaking. It is so nice not to toss and turn all through the night. I am going to up my regime to use it for high blood pressure next. Wish me luck!

ive noticed since tacking ACV and baking soda for a couple of weeks now I do not snore anymore. My husband says he cant believe it because I snored regularly. Can it be the ACV? How would that medically stop me from snoring?:??????

Seven days ago I was ready to put a gun to my head. I was continuously waking up, had difficulty breathing and swallowing. My self diagnosis search led me to this web site. I started taking two tablespoons of ACV and a quarter teaspoon of baking soda in about 4 ounces of apple juice. It actually tasted pretty good. Some relief was almost immediate, but one week later I am thrilled to report 2 consecutive good nights sleeps of about 7 hours. This is the best I have slept in two months as the throat problems caused me to snore badly when I could get to sleep. My wife has welcomed me back from the guest room, which I am also thrilled about. I have osteoarthritis which I WAS using a combination of CELEBREX (4 OR SO A MONTH) and IBUPROPHEN(whenever I wanted)I would get up in the morning and enjoy 6 or 7 cups of coffee on an empty stomach, then eat and have 3 or 4 diet sodas during the rest of the day. BAD BAD BAD. So I stopped the coffee and sodas, started taking B complex, large doses of Vitamin c, L Glutamine and traded the coffee for herbal teas, and the sodas for juice. NO MORE IBUPROFEN Tylenol only if I need it. Bottom line: In a week I feel totally different, much much better actually. THANK GOD for this web site. I wish you luck if you have a similar situation to mine.

It has been two months since I started trying the apple cider vinegar for my sinuses and I cannot deny any longer the positive effects. I didn't see much of anything for the first week and a half or so, but then I could feel the pressure start to ease slightly. By a month in, I could sleep on my back for the first time in years (I've had to sleep on my side to avoid sinus headaches in the morning). My wife, who made fun of me at first for trying this now freely admits to me and to our friends that I don't snore as much anymore. We are both pretty surprised. I just take two spoonfuls in my bottled water each morning and one spoon in my herb tea. Many thanks - I am so glad I happened to google your site up!

I recently got engaged to an amazing woman whom just moved all the way across the country to be with me and we now have a baby on the way. I have always snored and when I was 17 got diagnosed with sleep apnea narcolepsy and insomnia. For a while my fiancce could deal with my snoring and I would wake up after a short nap with her smiling and playing with my hair. Recently since she has been pregnant this has become harder to ignore. I am now sleeping on the couch so she doesn't have to and she feels bad for "kicking me out" of our bedroom. My cpap machine kinda creeps her out and kittens like to bite the hose. So I'm looking for alternative resources to fix this issue. Will any of these above Apple Cider Vinegar remedies help a 21 year old with these issues?

James, Inclined Bed Therapy (very easy to rig up) might help with snoring. Read up on it.

Worked Temporarily

I've found this great website when searching for ways to removed moles from my face naturally and stumbled on the benefits of ACV, so I've been taking 2 table spoon in 8oz of water twice a day. I can't belive the immidiate impact ACV has on me. After taking the first cup I feel much more energetic, and after a week the skins on my face begin to clear-up. I've also found on here that ACV will also cure snoring so, after one week of taking ACV, I've asked my wife check to see if my snoring has improve. Not to my surprise, she said that my snoring has reduced dramatically. Well, now 4 weeks later my snoring has came back. What is wrong? Should I increase my dosage and frequency to 3 table spoon in 8oz of water and 3 times a day?

Thank you Earth Clinic

Acid reflux can cause snoring as well as sleep apnea. Acid splashing into your throat and burning causing swelling. Can cause a narrowing of your airway. Making you snore and maybe even causing sleep apnea.

Every night before bed, my husband and I put a little coconut oil up in our nostrils/mose. Ever since we started doing thtis, he has a lot less trouble with allergies, and he says that I no longer snore! Not that I ever was a real loud snorer, but whatever heavy breathing that blockage or congestion was causing, it is now gone! It only takes about 1/4 tsp. - just a tiny bit on your fingertip for each nostril.

It apparently works for some but not here. I have tried it for 2 years now and after putting the bed back on level it seemed like it was still raised 6". We have not noticed any difference in the way we sleep or feel after trying it, so I would have to give it a nay.
