Unbelievable!! I am 2 days away from an endoscopy which is the first step in surgical correction for GERD. I have suffered from GERD for over 12 years and in preparation for my next pregnancy, have decided to have the issue corrected. Mine became so bad after my first pregnancy that for the last 5 years, I have been taking double dose OTC Prilosec with only partial relief. To prepare for the procedure, I have to be off of Prilosec for 5 days prior and 2 days post. This scared the tar out of me since I am usually in burning pain if I am even 2 hours late with my pills. I am now 3 days off of the pills and have been, so far successfully, fighting the urge to call and cancel the whole thing just so I can get back on some Prilosec ASAP. With my doctors ok, I have been taking above the max dose of Tums but when I hit about 30 for today, I figured that couldn't be too good. Looking for alternatives, I found this website and read about the pickles. Ironically, I had a pickle from lunch that I had not eaten for fear that it would make me worse. I went and got it and decided, at this point, nothing could be worse. Right after eating it, I noticed a difference. More than I had gotten with all the Tums all day long. Unfortunately, I only had one spear and will have to stop and get more on my way home but this really was amazing. Absolutely worth a try.
Apple Cider Vinegar

2 tbsp. Organic Apple cider vinegar - twice daily - at first used honey too & straw. Now use plain w/hot water & sip w/straw like a cup of tea. no sweetener anymore. Cured acid reflux, gerd, heartburn... and I think the gastritis but until I do another scope test all I know is no more stomach problems. 'How is it that vinegar which is acid... can cure acid problems in the body?? It doesn't make sense, but it works. Also I found when i take it -It kills my taste for sweets! so I'd have my sweets and then take the vinegar
Reader Theories
My comment is a theory for why GERD is so prevalent. GERD is related to IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) the symptoms are similar. There has been a lot research showing that fluoride is a major contributing factor to IBS and GERD. If you look at about when people started having problems with GERD and IBS in this country you will find it about 30 years ago when fluoride was introduced into the water supply in many states. It's ubiquitous because we not only get in our water but it is in the air and in the food we eat. Also, it's in the toothpaste that most people use. We are inundated with it and it is VERY toxic! There is a website that has a lot of information about it: http://www.fluoridealert.org/
Good reading! Thanks for listening, Mike.
Apple Cider Vinegar

Started apple cider vinegar yesterday, I didn't take my protonix today and my throat is not burning and my meals are digesting well. I have been taking 40mg of protonix a day for about a year and have become addicted to them. Without protonix my throat gets all irritated and I get heart burn. I started taking zantac and it worked real well but a doc recommended protonix and gave me a 1 week sample. I think the sample made my GERD way worse and I became addicted to protonix and was not able to stop taking them or it felt like acid was shooting up my throat. I hope this method works as the other times I quit protonix cold turkey like this I suffered greatly. My mom said her uncle always said apple cider vinegar was great for you to take daily and is amazed I found this on the net.
Apple Cider Vinegar

I have been suffering from GERD for a few months now and was up to 30mg of Prevacid, which has not been working. The symptom is constant coughing all day and I had to watch everything I ate. My sister told me about ACV, how she took it when she felt like she was having a heart attack from a reflux episode and it went completely away. I bought a bottle and took a tablespoon with a glass of water with a meal, sipped it slowly. At first the coughing got worse for a few minutes and then my coughing went completely away. It's been two days and I have been eating everything I like again, and in larger amounts. I am weaning myself from the Prevacid, only took 15mg today, and have been drinking the vinegar with my meals. I feel a lot better and my coughing is greatly diminished. I didn't think it would work, but it does.
Apple Cider Vinegar

I have had Acid Reflux/Gerd and a history of Ulcerative Colitis and Gastric Ulcers for over 10 years. I just went through my 5th Endoscopy last week and will have my 7th colonoscopy next week. I currently have 2 ulcers that are healing. I am in constant pain from the back of my throat down to my gut with belching and food retching. I have taken just about every pill that a doctor can prescribe for these conditions, from Prevacid to Protonix, to Nexium, but can't seem to get full relief. If I eat anything with fiber like raw vegetables, or whole grains or any carbs, I am in utter misery for hours - as many as 8 hours later I am retching up acid. I just found your site today out of desperation. I tried the vinegar trick and already the belching has subsided and the throat isn't so constricted. I hope it continues to give me relief even though it sounds ludicrous to add acid to acid. I thank you for the info and will continue to visit this website daily.
Apple Cider Vinegar

The Vinegar helped me so much, I have suffered from AR for at least 6 years & now my stomach feels so good. I can eat my favorite things again like my moms home made Fudge & I love cashews too. I heard some guy in an infomercial talking about his book on natural cures & he mentioned it. I asked my aunt if she knew anything about it so we went to the store to buy some at first it burned so bad, probably because of the burns from my acid in my esophagus. Within a few minutes I felt so much better & now my stomach feels good all the time & I've only taken it for about 2 weeks. The GERD was keeping me up at nights, I lost my voice several times & of course theres the awful Vurps that if someone notices you have to pretend you didn't do. Because no one wants to hear that your foods coming back up on you. It's simply amazing how well it works. Although I don't know if I'll ever be used to the taste. I am once again getting used to eating food I actually enjoy.
Mangosteen Juice

I have had GERD (reflux disease) for six years now. I started taking ranitidine and then quickly worked my way up to nexium from 20mg a day to 40mg a day. Even on 40mg a day, I still had signs of persistent GERD in the form of chest pain. I read about MANGOSTEEN, a natural fruit juice that is becoming more popular and decided to try it for its general health purposes. I did not expect that it would keep me off of my nexium!!! I take 2 -3 1 oz shot glass size drinks a day and I have not taken my nexium since October...it is now February! If I miss a day, I do feel it. But I feel great not taking the prescribed medication.
I have a small hiatus hernia and start my mangosteen drink tomorrow!!
I would like to come off tablets!!
Dietary Changes

I did research in medical journals over gerd/acid reflux since it was causing some health problems. What I found was that carbonated drinks build pressure in the stomach pushing the acid back into the throat. I drink one carbonated drink mid-morning then juice, water and decaf-tea during the remaining day. I also found that caffeine relaxes the muscle that becomes weak with gerd. It was a slow process to cut back on the caffeinated drinks and caffeine but now I am feeling so much better.
Dietary Changes

I'had acid reflux for 2 yrs. and when I went on the Atkins Diet, I never even expected such a sudden cure! I then went to the Atkins Online forum and did a search about acid reflux to see if others had the same experience on this diet. AMAZING! I found other people on the forum saying their acid reflux is gone too as a result of this low carb diet. I realized that the HIGH CARBS were the CAUSE of the GERD ALL ALONG!! As I type this, I know I will sleep just fine again tonight as a result of this discovery!!! I can only hope that this helps others who are suffering.
I think it is individual. For me, my gerd trigger is protein. Atkins diet made my acid reflux worse.
Dietary Changes

I have never taken much ibuprofen, but I have been a rather regular user of Excedrin in the past (aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine). I don't take it anymore. My GERD started after I had been on a lo-carb diet for about 5 months. I had never had trouble before. I think the high fat/high protein diet wasn't the best thing for GERD. I went off the diet immediately, but the GERD never left (it's been two years now). Just for your information. I am not overweight and I exercise daily.
