Our family has had the terrible flu that has been all over the country.

We are mostly better, but the cough lingers (and relapse is common.)

I have been drinking vinegar tea and that has helped some. But this morning, I squeezed the juice of one lemon into a mug and added hot water and that seemed to be more effective for this cough.

My 11 year old has had a relentless cough and, after 2 weeks, was not really improving. I started using the nebulizer on him yesterday with 2 teaspoons 1% hydrogen peroxide 4-5 times a day. To make 1% hydrogen peroxide, I mixed up a jar with 1/4 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 1/2 cup of distilled water. I then use 2 teaspoons of this in the nebulizer as often as desired. His cough today has been noticeably less. I am using hydrogen peroxide from the drug store in the brown bottle.

I also used that same hydrogen peroxide in the ears (straight 3%, not diluted) for anyone whose ears felt stuffy. This flu has come with some ear and sinus pain after the first week, many of us have found.

We have also been using Nyquil to help us sleep. (Just like the commercial promised back in the 80's.) It seems that returning to normal activity and not enough sleep are the recipe for relapse.

This flu has also had a seriously painful sore throat. My son asked for a throat spray, but the store was out. I made my own - 2 Tablespoons of honey and 2 Tablespoons of warm water and 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract (not essential oil) I put that in a little spray bottle. It is tasty and helpful. Of course, gargling salt water is ideal, but a yummy spray is a better sell than gargling. :)

Take care everyone!

Hi Mama to Many,

For the persistent cough please try nebulizer with baking soda. ( 1 tea spoon of baking soda for the cup of water ).

I hope it will help your kid.

Hi,

Diluted hydrogen peroxide in the nebulizer is highly effective for cough and chest infection. The 1% solution of hydrogen peroxide seems to high. I use what Mercola recommends, which is the 0.1% or what Dr. Brownstein recommends, which is 0.04%. The dilution is done with saline. Try the diluted betadine for through soreness. This is done by diluting the 10% down to 0.5-1%. It is very effective.

I also use a home made mouthwash/gargle that is the best I a have ever used. Directions given below: Add 2 tablespoons of black seeds and 2 tablespoons of whole cloves to 800 ml of water in a pot. Boil it covered for 5-10 minutes, no more than that. Keep it covered till it cools to prevent evaporation. Strain it, then add 150 ml of apple cider vinegar then add water till it reaches 1 liter. Trust me, this is the best mouth wash I have ever used. It should be used after brushing.

Hello and thank you for the mouthwash recipe! Can you please let me know what kind of black seeds you use? Are they black sesame seeds or?

Is the peroxide already 3% or do you dilute it to make it 3% and where do you purchase peppermint extract?

Hi Karen,

For in the ears, I use the 3% hydrogen peroxide in the brown bottle. For the nebulizer I would dilute to 1% by mixing 1 part of the 3% hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts distilled water.

You can find peppermint extract in the grocery story in the baking section, usually near the vanilla extract. My daughter picked me up some at Walmart!

I was very ill with a horrible sore throat and phlem in my chest. I found a 3oz bottle filled with saline solution and threw the solution out. I then filled it with 3 drops Apple Cider Vinegar (Or less for those who think it may be too much) and filled the rest with distilled water or tap water. I threw my head back and sprayed my nostrils. It burned a little but took the pain of the sore throat away. Later I ate a 1/2 inch of fresh Ginger and chewed it. A lot of phlem came out. After a couple of days of doing this I was fine. Hopes this helps you.

Garlic/Onion/Ginger/Lemon/Lime/HoneyMexican Herbal Tea for Colds – Flu – Covid19:

My friend from Guadalajara, Mexico swear by this herbal tea for general health and to prevent cold/flu virus's in the body. She said this is what they are using there to prevent Covid19. They said it is to be drank everyday to prevent you from becoming sick. I just started drinking mine and already feeling better from a lingering head cold and fever. The Amish have a similar recipe.

As a preventive = drink 1x/daily

Currently ongoing sickness = drink 3x/daily

Material needed:

*1 pint glass mason jar or similar object with lid

*Boiling hot water

*Strainer

Ingredients:

*2 cloves garlic (minced)

* 1 onion slice “red, yellow or white your choice” (chopped)

* 1” ginger root fresh (grated)

* ½ lemon (squeezed and add w/peel to jar)

* ½ lime (squeezed and add w/peel to jar)

* 1 tablespoon honey

Instructions:

  1. Add garlic, onion, ginger, lemon and lime with peel to mason jar.
  2. Add boiling water and place lid on jar (not screwed) to keep steam from escaping.
  3. Allow to steep for 20 minutes.
  4. Strain into coffee mug and add honey and drink.

Rob, this is a great recipe. I also add some cayenne pepper to mine. Add as much heat as you can take. This along with spicy tomato broth chases away a cold/ sore throat/ ear ache that is just beginning. Or it helps to lessen the severity of one that is in full-blown stage. Cheers!

I have to share a wonderful remedy that provided immediate relief and nipped my flu/cold/sore throat or whatever I was coming down with immediately.

In a blender, blend an entire bulb of raw garlic (I know lol that's alot! ), a huge slice of ginger, 3 tablespoons of raw organic honey, a tablespoon of organic cayenne pepper, 4 tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar with mothers, 1 lemon squeezed, 2 cups of water.

Drink a sip of this special concoction every few hours (sip at first to make sure your stomach can handle it, and drink more if you can! ). This brought immediate relief to whatever I had going on! I am pretty healthy and typically I have other protocols that I employ (organic supplements), but this year, I am super passionate about using "whole real foods" for my body so that's why I tried this. My only warning is that you will reek/smell like garlic for at least two days, but I was so amazed at how quickly this worked that I had to share this remedy!

Use a vege/fruit juicer. Juice 1 clove of garlic & 1 strand of fresh ginger. This drink can be way strong but drink anyway & follow with H20. I experienced a massive expulsion of mucus from my mouth & once the mucus was expelled, I felt way cool & clean.

Hi there,
I wanted to thank everyone on this site for some great remedies. I am 5 and half months pregnant and I suffered with a very long and vigorous sinus and chest flu. My symptoms were a mild high temperature (37.5 -38) not high fever but enough to make me feel horrible. Coughing, sinus pressure with no ability to breathe through my nose. The symptoms lasted for 5 days until I decided to take serious action. For 3 days after 5 days of suffering I did the following steps 2 to 3 times a day until my symptoms disappeared!

Step 1:
Boil 3 cups water
Peel 3 large cloves of garlic and cut in half and add to water. Take water off heat and add half cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Add half cup of honey. Let mixture sit for 20 mins and then strain and drink.

Step 2:
Nasal irrigation
Buy a neti pot or Neil Med saline nasal rinse. Make sure not to make your own salt water solution it's not as balanced at the one you buy specifically for nasal irrigation. This helps soooo much but after 3 days of constant use.

Step 3:
Apple cider vinegar steam
Get _____s original apple cider vinegar
Take one cup of vinegar and one cup of water
Bring to a boil and breath the steam with a towel over the pot. Make sure the mixture is not boiling while you breath the steam. This may burn while you breath through your nose, make sure to keep your mouth and eyes closed. Breath the steam for 5 min intervals. If it burns a lot them lift head up higher. This works the best!!!!! It just takes a few days of patience!

Step 4:
Take extra vitamin c. Preferably the powder that you can drink. Do not exceed more than 2000mg. Do these steps every day for 3 days and I promise you will feel soo much better if not totally healed. Cheers,
Kasia

As I sit here I am recovering from what I am sure is the flu. I started with fever 102 and runny nose all at the same time. Terrible body aches. I nipped it in the bud with ACV three times daily. I took actonite, 5 pearls, and 2 aspirin together and I wasn't sure if I was suppose to do that but it was a life saver. I felt greatly improved within 30 minutes. I also took some homeopathic cold and flu tablets that melt under your tongue.

Woke up this morning with no aches or fever. Just a little runny nose left. I also took colloidal silver 12 tsp three times daily.

Pretty good recovery in one day. I'm impressed! Thankyou so much.

I cannot offer enough praise for Neem. I used the salve several years ago for cellulitis on my arm. It was suggested to me by an owner of the health food shop I frequented. It was a mildly scented green salve. I decided to try it, as well as the capsules of Neem Leaves for internal use. In a few days, the salve, alone, worked to remove this weird bumpy rash that had been present for more than a month. I didn't even need the capsules. But luckily, I had them on hand last year when my neighbor came down with an awful upper respiratory virus. She hates antibiotics, but she had a fever and heavy lung congestion. I told her to try my Neem capsules, as my more recent research discovered Neem was anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-microbial. Like using goldenseal and echinacea rolled into one. She took 2 capsules 3 times per day. I was so surprised when she called me the next day and told me she felt 75% better just over night! Her congestion was almost gone overnight without a single side effect! So, fast forward to Christmas of 2012. The family was coughing and ill on Christmas. I started coming down with the flu. I was sneezing relentlessly, starting to get that itchy throat and coughing. I was determined not to be miserable. I took 2 Neem leaf capsules starting Christmas night before I went to bed. Symptoms were completely gone when I awoke. By noon, I was starting to get that scratchy throat again, so I decided to keep up with the Neem. I continued to take it 3 times a day for 3 days and I am happy to say that I never fully developed influenza. I think it could be a lifesaver for those who suffer from this nasty flu. Look it up. It's incredible and available from very prominent herb and vitamin companies

Onion Elixir

Posted by Iain Pickering (Glasgow, Scotland) on 03/20/2012

My nana always made up this dreaded mixture but to be honest it really does work. The remedy is simple yet effective. You need 4 items; 1 large glass jar with lid ( I use a thoroughly cleaned Yankee Candle jar )
2 large onions
Sugar
1. Roughly chop up the onion and place inside of your glass jar. 2. Pour in enough sugar to cover the onions. 3. Close jar and leave untill a clear liquid is formed at the bottom of the jar. 4. Pinch your nose and enjoy. Continue this for 1-2 days. Please note. You cannot overdose no matter how much you take.

Oregano Oil

Oil of Oregano for sore throats and to ward off cold/flu at first sign

I have switched to Oil of Oregano as my first defense against sore throat/cold and flu or earache linked to the throat. I used to do Cayenne pepper gargles (which DO work really well) but I find oregano oil even more effective and far simpler and less time consuming to administer.

I use 4 drops under the tongue (as per instructions on the label - different brands may have different dosing so do check). I leave the oil there for a few seconds then swallow in several small "gulps" making sure to linger on the throat as long as possible. It's potent stuff and not the most pleasant as it will sting/burn the throat a bit and makes me cough but that goes away very quickly.

Make sure to always do it on a FULL stomach (so as not to irritate the stomach lining) and repeat up to 3 times a day. I take it until I'm pretty certain it's killed the virus; usually, 1 - 3 times does the trick! I buy an organic brand from my local health and wellness store.

Last Winter I came down with a terrible cold that might have been pneumonia, as a lot of this was going around. I could barely get any rest at night because of the constant coughing, and I went through boxes of Klennex blowing my nose and sneezing. Also, I usually can get rid of a cold or flu with herbal teas, but nothing made a dent in this. I tried raw garlic but it seemed to do nothing. After trying for a week everything that usually works on a cold right away, I started taking Oregano Oil and Oregano capsules. I took 2 drops of the oil 3 times a day and 3 of the herbal capsules 3 times a day. The Oregano herbal capsules also have dried garlic and onion powder in them and something called Rhus Coriaria. After taking this for a day or two LOTS of bright orange mucus came out of my sinuses and lungs. It still took a few more days after that to feel completely well, but each day I was finally getting better, not just staying the same or getting worse. You might not want to post the name of the book I found this information in, but it is called "The Cure Is In the Cupboard" by Dr. Cass Ingram. I mention this because Oregano Oil is an essential oil and should not be taken in large amounts. People should really read about it before taking it, and there is a lot of inferior Oregano oil on the market. Also, it is used for many different ailments because it kills fungus, bacteria and viruses and different ailments require different dosages. I found that the best way to take it, at least for me, is to put one drop on my finger, lick it off and have a glass of water standing by. Then I take two big drinks of the water. This oil is HOT! I would not recommend waiting around holding it in your mouth to test just how hot it truly is.

I was suffering from a very bad cold/flu, specifically horrible sinus pressure and chest tightness and coughing, and clogged ears. I love ACV, Cayenne pepper, and hydrogen peroxide for many things, but none of these provided any releif for this. I also tried Grapefruit Seed Extract, sea salt, and borax to try to kill the virus. The last thing I tried was Oregano Oil. I used one drop sublingually and put a few more drops in water and felt immediate relief from the cough/chest tightness and sinus pressure as I was able to expectorate all the mucous. I think all the remedies listed for colds, sore throats, coughts etc. have merit but apparently different people require different remedies. So keep trying until you find the one that works for you. I was starting to get discouraged that I couldn't find any relief from natural remedies and figured I would have to succumb to cough syrup and sudafed. I'm glad I tried one last thing.

I recently got a natural cure for the cold and or flu. Our amazing chiropractor let us in on this secret. When you fist start to feel sick, ie: sore throat, runny nose, etc., take this remedy morning and night after you eat. Get empty gel capsules, the small size. You will also need the liquid form, with droppers, of OIL OF OREGANO and ECHANACHA with GOLDEN SEAL. Put 8 drops of each liquid in capsule and take with a full glass of water. NOTE - you may burp this up a little when you first start, but it just tastes like you ate pizza. Also DO NOT take if you are vomiting! Good Luck. This will make you fell better!
