Soothing 5α-Reductase Inhibitor Side Effects with Natural Remedies

| Modified on May 29, 2023

5α-Reductase inhibitors, such as finasteride and dutasteride, are commonly prescribed for treating conditions like hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (prostate enlargement). While these medications are often effective, they can sometimes lead to undesirable side effects.

Navigating these side effects is a crucial step toward enhancing your well-being. Fortunately, a range of natural remedies can help to alleviate these side effects and improve your overall health.

Zinc

Zinc is a powerful natural 5α-Reductase inhibitor. Some studies suggest that zinc could reduce the side effects of synthetic 5α-Reductase inhibitors by supporting healthy hormone regulation.

Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto is a plant native to the southeastern United States, long used in traditional medicine for urinary symptoms. The plant extract functions as a natural 5α-Reductase inhibitor and can assist in lessening side effects like sexual dysfunction.

Regular Exercise

Regular exercise can help combat fatigue, a possible side effect of 5α-Reductase inhibitors. By enhancing energy levels, promoting better sleep, and improving overall mood, exercise is a non-pharmaceutical method to manage side effects.

Dietary Changes

Maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can also help to mitigate the side effects of 5α-Reductase inhibitors. Nutrients such as Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and flaxseed, may support hormonal balance and reduce inflammation.

Pumpkin Seed Oil

Pumpkin seed oil is a rich source of phytosterols, which can block the action of 5α-Reductase, thus potentially relieving some side effects. Additionally, it promotes overall health with its high vitamin and mineral content.

Stinging Nettle Root

Stinging nettle root has been traditionally used for urinary issues related to an enlarged prostate. This herb functions as a natural 5α-Reductase inhibitor and can be used in conjunction with pharmaceutical treatments to reduce side effects.

Pygeum Africanum

Pygeum Africanum is a herbal extract from the bark of the African plum tree. It's traditionally used for urinary health, particularly in managing an enlarged prostate. Pygeum could potentially lessen the side effects of 5α-Reductase inhibitors.

Lycopene

Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant found in tomatoes, grapefruit, and other red fruits and vegetables. While it doesn't act directly as a 5α-Reductase inhibitor, its overall health benefits, including its role in promoting heart health and possibly prostate health, can make it a beneficial addition to your diet.

Beta-Sitosterol

Beta-sitosterol is a substance found in many plants. Some research suggests it can help improve urinary flow and reduce the amount of urine left in the bladder, making it a potential ally in managing side effects of 5α-Reductase inhibitors.

Incorporating these supplements into your lifestyle may provide support in managing the side effects of 5α-Reductase inhibitors. However, consulting with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen is crucial, as individual health needs and potential interactions with existing treatments must be considered.

Hello. I have dryness and fat loss in the face, eyes and eye sockets after using a 5ar inhibitor drug for years. It's a popular one for hair loss. I lost face fat and fat in the eye sockets after I started. My face, eyes and tissues around the eyes are very dry and inflamed literally affecting vision.

Example: the moment start using my eyes in the morning I get dryness, inflammation and a feeling of pressure in the nasal passages, sinuses and eyes themselves. But when I get a cold all of that is watery, hydrated, swollen and my vision is near 20/20 until the cold is gone! No kidding.

I'm looking for ideas and solutions I take zinc and nettle root powder which are both 5ar inhibitors but have many benefits. Information about whether they'd cause these symptoms is sketchy at best. The biggest side effects of taking 5ar blocker drugs is low libido and erectile dysfunction which I don't have so I'm confused. I stopped taking it a year ago. Normally these side effects are permanent but the biggest ones went pretty quick.

I'm looking for ideas and solutions.

Daniel
