There is no right or wrong way to meditate. So take what other people give you and find your own way. I have carved out a small corner in one of the rooms in my house as my meditation corner. I keep my stuff there and usually meditate in the same place every day - although I will meditate in other rooms or outside if I feel called to do so. I don't really need much - I have a pillow to sit on, a candle that I light, my journal and occassionally I use lavendar oil. I also usually set a timer so I know how long I've meditated for. I light my candle, open my journal to a fresh page, and sit in a cross legged position, upright, with a straight and long spine. I do maybe 5-10 deep belly breaths... First focusing on my 3rd eye (the space in between your eyebrows), then focusing on the rising the breath up from my belly to my chest. Then I release the breath and just breath normally. And I just sit there. If a thought comes in, I don't judge it, I don't fight it - I just let it be. I let everything be - my thoughts, my breath, etc. In most of our lives we do the exact opposite - we are never happy just being... We are always trying to strive for me, be different, change and control things, etc. So in meditation I focus on just being. In the beginning its hard. I would keep my journal handy bc inadvertantly I would run through list after list of things I needed to do or remember. So I would write it down during meditation so I could get it out of my head. I started off with 10 mins once a day and literally it was 10 mins of to do lists. But I let it be. And eventually made my way up to 20 mins twice a day. I started noticing the to do lists would fade and I would just be sitting there enjoying being in the present moment, when all of a sudden it was 20 mins later.

The theory is that the more stillness you can bring to your mind through consistant meditation, the more still it will become... Sort of like working out a muscle. Also the more you connect with your spirit, higher self, the Divine, etc - the more you attract good things and the higher emotions into your life... Rather than lettting the mind and ego run rampant with lower emotions and thinking bad things. I will also sometimes ask "what do I need to know" and see what messages I get. Or sometimes I will do visualizations of living life without anxiety. I always end my meditation with prayer - gratitude first, and then what I need to help me serve other people.

I have tried MANY things for anxiety - and this has hands down been the most important practice in my arsenal. I can only hope that it does for you what it has done for me. Please feel free to reply back with any questions - I would love to help in any way I can.

You also have to keep believing that there is hope and that you will get better.... bc you will.

In researching the causes of anxiety attacks, I believe it beneficial to note that 'breathing' is essential to physical well being. Shallow breathing which leads to insufficient oxygen appears a catalyst to these attacks.

What does that mean? When an anxiety attacks appears, get up and move, fast if you can, run, walk, whatever, just remember to get those lungs filled with air and gently exhale through your mouth. Repeat slowly and deeply enough to accomplish a replenishment of oxygen without hyperventilating. Hold your intake of air for a few seconds and slowly exhale through your mouth, repeat at least 10 times.

I am giving an update. Holy Basil did not work, all though I thought it had. Just temporary relief. About five days later I ended up in the emergency room for a full blow panic attack and they gave me 1mg of valium, which brought it down. Also a temporary prescription of adivan, which really didn't do anything for me, chilled me only for a few hours. The next day, still anxiety, and so forth. It took me about 5 days of experimenting to figure out what was wrong - took 50 mgs of Dhea, and finally could breathe again, all anxiety left. It was my adrenals all along. Please do research on low Dhea, as there is a kind, I believe call Kudo, that inhibits it affecting other hormones in the body so that you don't grow a mustache, thinning hair. 50mgs is very high to take for any long period of time, check out info on Curezone or other forums.

Awhile back I was dating a heavy beer drinker. I started heavy drinking beer with my buddy. 'bout a 6 pack of exotic beer a night. 'round that time I got horrible panic attacks for the 1st time in my life. So bad I'd go to the hospital. They gave me drugs but the drugs didn't help. They'd give me more drugs util I was a zombie. My family complained & I was taken off. I had also stopped drinking beer cuz your not supposed to drink while on these drugs. So even I stopped the drugs I didn't get panic attacks that sent me to the ER. Lots of sugar can also bring them on a lil' bit. I've been readin here & other places that alcohol & even sugar can deplete the body of nutrients like magnesium. When I rub some magnesium on I feel calmer. No panic attacks. Also helps with my leg cramps and speeding heartbeat I sometimes get at night. IDK why the hospital doesn't look for such. There tests don't seem to pick up borderline deficiencies. My shrink tried to tell me I got me a chemical imabalance and needed the drugs. When I stopped the drugs that made me nutty in a different way, the attacks were gone. Cuz I quit the drinkin as well.

EMDR

Hello, I have had anxiety issues for about 15 years, the doctors all say is it GAD, but I believe it is social anxiety, issues accumulated mostly as a child that were never addressed, just stored within me. I have taken Paxil, Lexapro, Zanax and Effexor. Effexor is the only one that really helped me and still let me feel normal. Just recently my sister who has similar issues to me went thru EMDR sessions with a professional, no medications used at all. This is eye movement desensitation reprogramming. You are awake, and take no meds. This counseling basically reprograms your brain with good healthy info. My sister has become a confident person and says this has worked for her. I am currently weaning myself off 225 mg of daily effexor and have started using some self help methods and it has already boosted my confidence and my shaky nervous voice is becoming less noticable.

If you have crippling Anxiety, EMDR sessions with a safe trusted professional can really reprogram the brain and help heal trauma. However it takes a full lifestyle change to healthy living to find absolute resolution.. Drink lots of pure water, eat alkaline pure food, Good sleep, breathing, regular bowel movements, enemas, daily mediation or prayer

Awareness and control of feelings of fear, disappear and hopeless. Try to stay in the moment. Gratitude and Love seem to be the emotional antidotes. Talking and healing deep buried emotions are also key.

Avoid- Alcohol, Tobacco, Wheat, SUGER!!! Be patient with your healing. enjoy the journey

To sye from colorado. have you tried the EMDR therapy? I have been reading the book called "getting past your past" by Francine Shapiro, phd. I must say it is a fascinating read so far.

I came across information as well called Iasis treatment on youtube that looks similar but is not available where I live all about neuro feedback and getting brain chemicals in balance. Would like to hear more if you have done the treatment. Thanks. Health to all

I have used EFT to cure my anxiety, fears, sadnesses, and all types of pain too numerous to mention. It's such an easy technique to learn and use you can try it for almost any issue. If you don't get results there are plenty of other energy healing modalities that will be helpful. Here is a chart I use and with the tapping points and also a chart that explains what each point does energetically: http://www.freewebs.com/stevelevine/efttappingpoints.htm

I have used EFT for about 5 years and used it to help my niece relax at night before she went to sleep. I would tap lightly on her as she told me about her day. She was raised by her mom until she came to live with me, her mom had a lifestyle not suitable for a 4 yr old. So when the little girl moved in with me she had a few ODD behaviors. Like she constantly pulled at the crotch of her underwear, like she was frantically trying to get it not to touch her skin. She did something else as well that I can't remember. Anyway after a few weeks I noticed she didn't do those things anymore. She was more focused and paid better attention in school, just alot calmer. I also use it on my husband for relaxation purposes, he likes it. As for myself I use it almost everynight to get to sleep. It works and I love it!

The 3 years fight with anxiety was resolved by remote energy healer (CoherentHealer.com) and EFT ( emotional freedom technic) - tapping. The healer fixed my aura and told me that anxiety is caused by the trauma when you were a baby and did not have any control ( I was bit by a neighbor) and all other emotions that not released by me. I was very sceptical. He told me to do tapping on specific issues. If 4 days ago drive in a car as a passenger was so bad, today I drove to the store myself. Thank you.

For anxiety, improve your digestion system. The gut is the second brain. Haven't you ever heard of the gut/brain connection? If you are not digesting your foods, this can wreak havoc on the entire body. I was getting very anxious with heart palpitations before and ever since I improved my digestive system by taking digestive enzymes and probiotics, I have been calm as can be.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing. It can be done by looking left and right, hearing sounds in alternate ears left and right, crossing your arms and tapping your hands on opposite arms, or patting someone's legs left and right to help them. The idea is to stimulate the left and right hemispheres of the brain alternately while dealing with the trauma. I'm thinking it helps the emotional side of the brain and the logical side of the brain talk. You can read up on it on the net easily enough, but it's best that a therapist help adminster it for best results.

I heard that people in the 9/11 attack used EMDR with good results. I used it for getting past a rape and another invasive trauma. EMDR is the therapy that finally helped.

Hi Ganpat; It's possible that a zinc deficiency is involved with these symptoms. Anxiety and depression along with BPH are included in the long list.

The amounts people take average between 15-30 mgs. daily of zinc. If higher doses are to be taken, a practioner should be consulted, because too high a dosage can irritate the prostate. As with any supplement, we need to find the most suitable amount.

Potassium is also very helpful for anxiety. Apparently, there is alot of zinc and potassium in prostate fluid.

To Ganpat from Jaipur : Hello :) I would recommend vitamin b complex for your nerves and also look on the internet for E.F.T (emotional freedom technique) videos or instructions. It works very well and can help you.

Best wishes, Fiona

I read a thread here a few weeks ago from Teena about flaxseed oil for anxiety. I bought cold-pressed, high lignin flax oil from the health food store to try it out. Very inexpensive compared to other omega oils, btw. I took a tablespoon and OMG, my anxiety disappeared within an hour. I can't believe it. I have a lot of stress and anxiety, which plagues me at night especially. I have tried other remedies for anxiety over the years including magnesium oil (helpful as well), but flax has been the VERY BEST of all I have tried. Oh I hope others will try it out. The only side effect is that it makes me need to use the bathroom more often than usual. So I take a break every few days. Going to try cutting back to a teaspoon and see if that is equally effective. Gratitude -- Thank you Teena for recommending this remedy!!!!

I use flaxseed oil softgels of 1000mg or more. Cold pressed! Organic. I take as many as I need like 2 per meal. It helps with my anxiety so much, very quickly after I take them. I take them also prior to getting my period, which helps to balance mood then.

Flax's fatty acid profile: omega 3,6, and 9. Love it!

Namaste, Sunny

I suffer with social anxiety disorder, I'm anxious and have difficulty thinking clearly in general not just in anxiety situations.I got myself flaxseed oil and took a tablespoon.I felt better instantly. My thinking became a lot clearer and my usual confused anxious state diminished. It definitely has a significant effect on brain chemistry. I'll be taking it everyday now :)

Anxiety attack--- a symptom of gaba deficency.

Have you ever wondered why some people always feel great while others always feel depressed or anxious? Scientific researchers have discovered that we are far more dependent on our gut flora that previously thought.

Gaba is an amino acid the body uses as a neurotransmitter to promote a calm sense of well being.gaba is the tranquility in the midst of life's storms. Gaba is what helps us relax and gaba also increases our tolerance to pain. In a deficency of gaba we feel anxiety, fearful, stressed out all the time and unable to relax. In a gaba deficency our pain levels rise.

So how do we make gaba in our bodies? The answer is we dont make it, it is made for us by a certain strain of gut bacteria called lactobacilli rhamnoses. In an absence of this intestinal bacteria our neurological health suffers. We develop anxiety attack and depression. sometimes people slip into such a state of depression they think suicidal thoughts as a result of a gaba deficency.dRug and alcohol cravings are often linked to a gaba deficency

So how do we overcome a gaba deficency? First we can take additional gaba as a supplement. It is available at any health food store for cheap.

Next we need to limit the amount of things harmful to our intestinal bacteria such as crops sprayed with roundup, antibiotics, too much colloidal silver, food preservatives like cancer causing bha and bht. Even coffee has a very negative impact on the intestinal microbiome. We then need to replenish benefical bacteria such as lactobacilli rhamnoses and others . Proper gut microflora is just now being recognized in psychology as having a direct cause-effect relationship on mental health.

As far as I am concerned, bht butylated hydroxy toluene sounds like trouble. First off there are conflicting reports of its carcinogenic effects. Then the substance is known to have harmful effects on gut microflora. Aside from that there are numerous other methods of stopping hep-c, hiv and other viruses that are not potentially dangerous. When in doubt I usually err on the side of caution, but that is just my opinion.

Dear Ben.

Much of what you have written is correct and interesting. This post is less than helpful. Bht kills many an infection. As Oscar has said there is help in the newest medical treatment for this illness. But to discount all the cures and help bht has provided from both Oscar and Ted is disturbing to me. Janet
