Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease in the world and is a huge and growing health burden for our current medical system to deal with at great expense. Unfortunately, the currently available drugs are only marginally helpful for patients who are mild to moderate in terms of disease symptoms and their effects seem to be short-lived in many cases.

In China, they have been testing GV-971, which is derived from a specific form of seaweed that is abundant there, for many years for use as a treatment for AD. They have finished initial testing in China and GV-971 is now available there for people with AD. Currently, they are also doing additional testing in North America and Canada, but that testing is still ongoing. Here is a link to a description of GV-971 and what previous GV-971 studies have shown regarding its usefulness for AD :

https://www.alzdiscovery.org/uploads/cognitive_vitality_media/Sodium_Oligomannate_(GV-971).pdf

GV-971 has several methods of action, but interestingly, one of its main methods of action is manipulation of the gut microbiome to reduce neural inflammation and protect neurons, while reducing oxidative stress.

Interestingly they are just starting testing GV-971 for Parkinson's disease also as noted in this report :

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/green-valley-obtains-ind-approval-from-us-fda-for-sodium-oligomannates-global-phase-ii-clinical-trial-in-treating-parkinsons-disease-301461838.html

This is really good news because the currently available drugs for AD are only marginally effective in mild to moderate AD and their usefulness can dwindle fairly quickly in some PD patients or offer no benefit in others. Add in the known side effects associated with one of the more common drugs in this class of drugs, Aricept, and you quickly start to realize the importance of GV-971. Here is a link to side effects seen in some Aricept users :

https://www.drugs.com/sfx/aricept-side-effects.html

It is worth noting that they are considering further studies at even higher dosing in the future to find out if higher dosing can cause further or better response in people with AD. As far as I am aware, this is the first new drug that has come available for AD in many years in the whole world. In the human trials so far for GV-971 at the currently prescribed dose, showed a safety profile similar to the placebo group. In the trials for GV-971, it showed clear and sustained benefit when compared to the placebo group from week four right through to the 32nd week or trial end.

They have not said when the US and Canadian studies will be completed, but as soon as they are, GV-971 may become a reality here once the FDA approves it. For now, China has already added it to their "National Drug Reimbursement List " (NDRL) and reduced the price by 60%. The original price was RMB 895 ($140.16 usd) and was lowered to RMB 296 ( $46.50 usd). Generally, the US pays more for pharmaceuticals, so it will likely be significantly more than these numbers when it comes available here.

Betty,

It was in the first link, but here is the description :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_oligomannate

Sodium oligomannate (development code GV-971) is a mixture of oligosaccharides isolated from the marine algae Ecklonia kurome that is used in China as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease (AD).[1] It was conditionally approved in China by the National Medical Products Administration in 2019 for mild to moderate AD to improve cognitive function.[1

This form of seaweed is plentiful there.

Hello everyone, My dad has Alzheimer's and was having two bad days and nights of asking every few mintues to take him back home and that he move out of the house and wanted to know how the furniture got back to the house he live in right now. My mom had not slept so my sister called and ask if I would go and spend time with my Dad so she could rest for awhile... I give God the Glory and Honor for this: I cut a whole lemon in half and squeeze all the juice and pulp in a glass of water put sweet and low to give it a little taste with some ice and he drank it in about 20min he stop asking about the other house. And another 15 minutes past by and he said he was going to go take a shower and he got up from his chair and took a shower. Since my Dad have been sick he hate to take shower. Please try it, I saw this work on my dad so my mom and sister went and bought a big bag of lemons and will start a morning and night routine... Stay Blessed

He did have a bad day so I question my Mom and she told me she had skip 3 of his lemon juice drink because she was sick and didn't give my Dad his lemon juice but was still taking the l-lysine. We put him back on the lemon juice and he was back to normal the following day. He is starting to use the phone again he had stop calling us when he was sick. He is also starting to eat some of his meal in the table. He was only eating in his chair in the lliving room. My Mom called me a few days ago and said that my Dad was doing great and she wanted to start taking the l-lysine also. So now my Dad is still at 1000 mg in the evening and my Mom is taking 500mg. 01-09-13. Up date on my Dad, he is still doing very well.

Anon, First I want to tell you why I gave my Dad the lemon juice. I was searching the net for remedies for alzheimer and found a site that said Lemon Balm may improve people memory's that have alzheimers. The evening when I went over to help with my Dad so my Mom could rest and shower, he was being very mean to my Mom, and he was upset about leaving the house they had just move in, he would just keep talking about the house. My parent have not move they have lived in the same house for about 25 years. When I was there sitting in the living room with him, I remember reading about the lemon balm. I had never heard of lemon balm and didn't buy any, but I knew I had lemons so that why I use lemon. It was very upsetting to me to see and hear my Dad just losing it. My brothers and sisters were already thinking of putting him in a home since he was starting to be mean to my Mom... My Dad is 78 year old and I have never seen him be mean to her.

So to answer your question, his memory is awesome, he knows who we are, if I ask my Mom where are your scissors he will answer first and he will tell me where to find them. And again I give God all the Glory and Honor... Stay Blessed

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but it sounds like before you tried this treatment, your Dad was terribly confused, upset, acting mean, and his memory was very poor. And now all of these things, including even his memory, have improved dramatically??

Please continue to post any clarifications or details or developments that you think are helpful.

I'm sure many people will be reading what you're posting here. Maybe some will try the freshly squeezed lemon juice (in water, with added non-sugar sweetener) twice a day and report their results.

WARNING!

I don't like lithium aspartate it's an excitotoxin much like aspartame. It may reverse, but only temporarily. Therefore the preferred lithium needs to be lithium carbonate, lithium citrate being the safest one. Long term use does more harm in aspartate form then good. Aspartate, MSG and aspartame are all excitotoxin. The beta amyloid is a toxicity of high level exposure of metal zinc, and hence 1000 mg of L carnosine and some small amounts of EDTA to remove zinc, as well as other metals is the cause of the alzheimer. Scientist found beta amyloid removes heavy metals, but in excess, beta amyloid becomes a problem. Therefore it makes more sense to use those that gives energy to the brain without the excitotoxins such as drops of methylene blue which is protective of the cell's mitochrondria systems, and the removal of heavy metals such as cilantro and carnosine and perhaps drops of sodium thiosulfate, or even chlorella to help remove the heavy metals. Potassium citrate will further alkalize the brain so the brain can heal. i don't believe in lithium aspartate because I have received several years ago that while initially it helped alzheimer, the condition later on became progressively much worse. It was from the excitotoxin of the aspartate.

thank you so much for your imput, I'm really looking for personal experiences before use it and your comment is of great help. nevertheless i'd like to deep more into this issue.

lithium carbonate is more toxic, it needs high levels in order to cross the brain barrier.

if lithium aspartate has that toxic effect, what is your experience with lithium orotate?

Low dosages of lithium have been found to be safe.[9] Dr. Jonathan Wright suggests 20 to 30 mg. of lithium aspartate or lithium orotate daily as an appropriate dose to stop brain aging. This is 1/3 to 1/6 the dosage of lithium carbonate used to treat manic depressive disorder. Dr. Hans Nieper of Germany has learned that lithium orotate or lithium aspartate penetrate cells more effectively than lithium carbonate so smaller doses can be used. One tablespoon of flaxseed oil daily along with 400 I.U. of vitamin E ensures that no lithium toxicity can develop

HOW TO ENLARGE YOUR BRAIN AND IMPROVE BRAIN PERFORMANCE
By Dr. James Howenstine, MD.

NewsWithViews.com
http://www.newswithviews.com/Howenstine/james11.htm

recent research has shown that low doses of lithium preserve and renew[1] brain cells. Eight of ten persons given lithium showed an increase in brain grey matter of 3 % after only 4 weeks. By promoting brain cell regeneration and increasing brain size lithium can function as an anti-aging nutrient for the brain.

Lithium also accomplishes the following benefits for brain cells:

*
Lithium enhances DNA replication which is the first step to formation of new cells.
*
The damaging effects of excitotoxins. (monosodium glutamate (MSG), aspartame (Nutrasweet) etc. can be blocked by lithium.[2]
*
Animal research shows that lithium can decrease the areas of cell death after induced strokes by 56 %.
*
Lithium protects rat brain cells from the. increased levels of brain cell death caused by anti-convulsant drugs (Dilantin phenytoin , Tegretol, carbamazepine etc.)
*
Lithium may protect against adverse effects from mood altering drugs, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, 'uppers"and "downers", and marihuana all of which cause brain damage with long term use.
*
Abnormally functioning signaling pathways may become repaired by lithium.
*
The aluminum felt to be a possible cause of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). is chelated[3] by lithium so it can be more easily removed from the body.

Research has suggested that lithium blocks the secretion of beta-amyloid in Alzheimer's disease and prevents damage from pre-existing beta amyloid. Overactivity of the brain cell protein tau contributes to death of neurones in Alzheimer's Disease. Lithium inhibits this tau protein damage and the formation of the neurofibrillary tangles seen in AD.

I'm looking for natural neurogenesis boosters, like THC from hemp, but it is illegal in US.

A friend who I have known for roughly 30 years always has had migraine headaches for as long as I have known her. About two years ago, she started showing symptoms of early onset Alzheimer's Disease (AD), which is advancing very rapidly.

I was wondering if migraines might be a forewarning of future AD, and according to the following article, it definitely is with people who regularly have migraine headaches being three times more likely for men and 6 times more likely for women to get AD than non-migraine people :

https://www.migrainedisorders.org/migraine-and-alzheimers-disease/#:~:text=The study found that a, 9.9% of cognitively intact participants.&text=They also found that people, dementia than people without dementia.

Here are two very relevant quotes from this interesting article :

' A 2001 study examining the risk factors for Alzheimer's disease found that men and women with a history of migraine were three times more likely to develop AD.5 Looking at women alone, the study found that they were almost 6 times more likely to develop AD.5 '

' Another study was conducted to determine if migraine was a risk factor for dementia subtypes; Alzheimer's and vascular. The study found that a history of migraine was noted in 23.5% of participants with AD compared to 9.9% of cognitively intact participants.6 They also found that people with a history of migraine were three times more likely to have dementia than people without dementia.6 Similar to the previous study, they found that people with AD were four times more likely to have a history of migraine disease.6 Interestingly, when looking at the subtypes of dementia, they found no correlation with a history of migraine and vascular dementia.6 '

I tried to convince my friends to try alternative means of improving her situation, but my other friend, her husband, will not try any alternatives even though she is declining very rapidly. She is now so bad in just two years that she could not remember to take helpful supplements without someone giving them to her.

If you have migraines regularly, you are at increased risk for AD, especially if you are a woman. It may be worth taking steps early on to improve your chances against getting AD.

We started MMS, plant food diet, herbs, lots of water, and vitamins. He was taken off all pills and communicated with us. We did lots of our own research. That was 7 years ago. It is worth it to research everything, the truth is out there.

My Dad is 87 and has Alzheimer's. I went to visit him last weekend (He lives near my siblings, ten hours away.) I only get to see him every few months. I arrived and he was sitting on the edge of his bed. I greeted him and he wasn't very responsive. He wasn't sleepy, he was just kind of vacant. I encouraged him to get up and go sit with me and several of my kids in the living area. He was having a hard time comprehending basic directions. He was making a repetitive noise, which was new for him since I last saw him. I was feeling pretty discouraged.

We got to the living room. My kids had stringed instruments and started to play. They played some songs that I knew he loved and had been singing for more than half a century. Dad immediately perked up. He sang along, he smiled, he showed nostalgic recongnition. He even stood up and started "directing." We sang and sang and sang. He clearly enjoyed it. What was interesting is that he seemed mentally better after we had been singing. When I had arrived, I don't think he knew I was his daugther or even someone he knew. Later he was introducing me to someone as his daughter. He couldn't recal my name. I supplied it and he said, "Oh, yes, " and then he said my middle name.

I have seen music affect my babies. I have seen music help children learn to read. And I know it is powerful.

I wonder what would happen if my Dad had a lot more singing time each day.

The nursing home where he lives does work hard to cater to the needs of memory care patients. The movies they play are the oldies that most residents would rememember from younger days - lots of black and white movies, even. Every day during meal time they play "big band" music. I have often seen my dad begin to dance a little when he hears the music. He loved to dance as a younger man even taught ballroom dancing.
I know research is being done with regards to the elderly and music. I would love to understand it more. But meanwhile, I know that music helps the brain, even of those with Alzheimer's.

How to put this into practice? If you have a loved one with Alzheimer's, make a point of playing music they loved when they were younger. Sing with them, when you can. I don't think all music is equally helpful. Music is emotional - it evokes happiness, depression, anger, excitement, restlessness, peacefulness. So be mindful what the music you chose is going to promote.

I am also convinced that complex classical music does amazing things for the brain. If you do not know where to start with classical music, start with Bach. It will keep you busy for years. Play Bach for the elderly people you love. Play it for your babies and toddlers and children, too. In fact, play it for yourself. I think it is something from which everyone can benefit.

Nattokinase

Posted by Prioris (Fl, Usa) on 10/28/2013

Prevent Alzheimers Disease with Nattokinase. Here is explanation:

-------------

Alzheimer's disease occurs when there's a build-up of amyloid. Amyloid is oxidized protein. It's a waste product that builds up inside all non-dividing cells. This includes the cells in your heart, brain, kidneys, etc. It builds slowly. And it slowly shuts down the ability of your cells to properly function. It irritates them, sort of like a chigger on your skin. Your brain cells are particularly sensitive.

It's rare to find a compound that can dissolve amyloid. But recently, researchers discovered that my favorite enzyme, nattokinase, cleaves to the protein and enhances its removal. What's interesting is that other protein dissolving enzymes, including trypsin and plasmin, don't do it. Trypsin is a protein-dissolving enzyme made by your pancreas. Plasmin is a protein in your blood that dissolves clots.

Interestingly, nattokinase got its fame as a clot buster or clot preventer. Now science is showing its superiority in dissolving this other unwanted protein.

--------------

I noticed Nattokinase was missing from Earth Clinic's Alzheimer remedy list.

Here is a link that would support the use of both Nattokinase and Serrapeptase in rats with Alzheimers: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23821590

Since Serrapeptase also has fibrolytic activity, I should have somewhat same effect on amyloid plaque. It is not as natural to the body as Nattokinase but that may be why to add it. Many supplement formulas used both to remove plaque from arteries. When one considers the list of very positive effects that these fibrolytic enzymes have on clots, heart attacks and strokes, i'd add it even if I didn't have Alzheimers especially if one is 40 years or older.

My father has been taking 325 mg of "no flush" niacin for 4 months. (I would like to see him taking more, but he takes a lot of medication and even getting in that one pill a day is a step in the right direction.)

I, and others, have noticed a lessening of his Alzheimer's/Dementia symptoms. He is less confused. He is sharper. As mentioned in another post, I just got back from a visit with him. We played cards. He played a spelling bee type game with my son. He would not have done these things a few months ago.

After my mother passed away four months ago, we expected my dad to decline steadily. He is doing so much better than we expected. He does have less stress now (watching your spouse die of Alzheimer's over the course of a couple of years is very stressful.) He is also getting regular exercise. Those and the niacin may all be contributing to his improved mental condition. Whatever it is, we are glad!

While it is encouraging to discover that B3 vitamin appears to be helpful in effecting the course of Alzheimer's positively, yet not completely to the point of reversal or even as a prophylactic, one has to ask the question why there is so much emphasis on one agent, when in fact all chronic diseases are a result of multiple deficiencies. Can people not think in multiple factorials? Or is it mental laziness that prompts people and scientists to want single solutions for diseases which they have decided are a single entity caused by a single factor or agent. All agents that will help to energize brain cells, such as D ribbose, creatine, MSM, coconut oil, coQ10, should be taken into consideration. One must also remember that toxins such as aluminium, fluoride and mercury are neurotoxic and probably play a major role in causing mental deterioration. If such factors are ignored, the research done on any disease becomes null and void and of no value what so ever.

Good comment. It's certainly true that there are often multiple causes and remedies for diseases. However, it is very difficult to research multiple items at the same time. For better or worse, the purpose of any study is to reduce the number or variables to find out is something works. Drug interactions are very problematic and difficult to track down. Anyone taking multiple medications daily can attest to how difficult it can be to figure out what drug is interacting negatively with another drug. I don't know how many Alzheimer's studies are currently in process, but just today I skimmed over at least 50, all different. Alzheimer's does not appear to have one cause: some are genetic, some may be environmental, a lot they're trying to figure out. Research done on one cause or remedy does not invalidate the research. A study is a beginning. Research on a medication, for example, cannot investigate drug interactions until they have the drug developed. No treatment will work on everyone. We are all unique.

Alzheimer's is certainly a very complicated and horrible disease, especially so to those of us who have watched it first hand destroy someone we loved. If niacinamide or anything else can help delay the progress for even a few people, IT IS WORTH IT! It's safe, cheap and has been around for a long time.

What you wrote is true.

Let's take this study for example:

https://www.clinmedjournals.org/articles/jgmg/journal-of-geriatric-medicine-and-gerontology-jgmg-3-021.pdf

The administration of NA alone did not have the desired effects, one should take more factors into account for best results, no matter what.

I would like to share how I cured my 89 year old mother from Alzheimer's!

Six years ago my mother was diagnosed by a very reputable specialist with Alzheimer's. At the time she had difficulty remembering things she had done that day. She would ask the same questions over a lot. She would say things that did not make sense and she had become quite angry and irrational. The doctor told us that her condition would continue to deteriorate and that within about 3 years she would not be able to function on her own (even at that time she needed full-time caregivers to remind her what to do).

I am a holistic health practitioner and so I am familiar with a lot of supplements, herbs and foods to cure different conditions. So I started her on some of the supplements that I knew about for Alzheimer's. These included Phosphatidylserine (PS), L-Carnitine, Tumeric, Ginkgo and vinpocetine as well as a multi-vitamin. Two years after she started this protocol she went back for a follow up appointment with the Alzheimer's specialist who had originally diagnosed her. He was quite surprised that her condition had remained the same for two years and not progressed as he said it would. I believe that these supplements halted the progression of the Alzheimer's. But we really wanted to see improvement.

Here is where the cure comes in!

I had read about studies done using Niacinamide to cure Alzheimer's. The studies suggested giving it in small doses many times throughout the day to keep constant levels in the bloodstream. It suggested giving an oral dose of Niacinamide 12 times a day! This is very impractical for my mother who struggles to take all of her other pills. So we ended up giving her a 500 mg. capsule three times a day with meals.

At this time I had also read about studies showing that high doses of vitamin A actually dissolves Beta Amyloid deposits in lab animals. The study found that it not only dissolved the deposits, but it did so in a matter of hours! The article I read which was published by a doctor recommended a form of vitamin A called “Mycellized A" in liquid form as this is better absorbed. So I also started her on the mycellized vitamin A.

After starting her on these two new supplements (Niacinamide 500 mg 3 times a day, and Mycellized Vitamin A 100, 000 mg. a day for 3 weeks, (then cut back to 20, 000 mg a day maintenance) we noticed a big improvement.

Later we added a couple of other things which I believe helped her as well. One of them is Coconut oil. The other is to make sure that she does not have a bladder infection. My mother is prone to UTI's and we noticed that whenever she got one that her mental symptoms would get much worse. So we have to make sure that those are kept in check. As long as we are doing all of these things she does great.

It has been 6 years since her diagnosis and instead of progressing her Alzheimer's is gone for the most part. She is now back to her old self. Her thinking and cognition are good. She remembers almost everything about her day. She rarely repeats questions, her attitude is so much better. She is not angry or unreasonable anymore. She actually has conversations with me now where she can give me helpful advice on problems I may have. She's back to acting like my mom again! To recap, I feel that what really helped her the most has been the Niacinamide and the Mycellized vitamin A, and secondarily the coconut oil and preventing UTI's. Please try these as they may work for you as well.

A note about UTI's: It is quite well known by nursing home staff that when an elderly person gets a UTI that it really affects them mentally. It can cause confusion, anger, and unreasonable behaviors. This is important-elderly people do not always have the typical symptoms on a UTI (frequent or burning urination, etc.) This is why it is so important if an elderly person is struggling with mental symptoms, especially if they come on suddenly that they go to a doctor and have a urine test done to check for a UTI. Usually they will perform a dipstick test on the urine at the doctor's office to check for bacteria and traces of blood. But if the dipstick test does not find anything please ask your doctor to send a sample of the urine to a lab for culture. This is a very simple thing for them to do. There are times that the culture will pick up an infection when the dipstick test does not. I hope that this information helps others who are suffering with Alzheimer's as my mother was. It is a difficult disease but I believe it can be cured with the above protocol. My mother is living proof!!!

Great story Joyce! Isn't God great? I take niacin myself for multiple health issues. Interesting to read about the Vit A form used. My mother is showing signs of Alzheimer's so this story I'll share with her. This sounds like a good plan for her. Thanks for sharing this great testimony. God Bless and may your mother continue good health!

Very impressive!!

I'm assuming you used Vitamin A in palmitate form since that's the only type I found online. If you could confirm that would be great.

Also, I am having a heck of a time finding a conversion chart that will convert mg's into IU's and hoped you could clear that up too. Evidently, not all conversions are created equal...converting Vit. A and Vit D from mg's to IU's involves a different process.

So if the Vit. A drops {palmitate} are 5, 000 IU's per drop, how many drops would = the 100, 000 mgs that you gave your mom? Since Vit. A is stored vs. eliminated, I want to be careful!

Like another poster here, I would also be interested in how much coconut oil you gave your mom each day too.

Thank you for sharing your success story. It's very encouraging!

Nowhereman: This may be a one time thing and she might not be monitoring the site any more. Maybe I could be of assistant. She may have intended to say 100,000iu instead of mg. 1mg of animal a is 1000iu. 1mg of beta carotene is 50iu. Many sites do not recommend palmitate because this is a synthetic isolate and has side effects. The proper ratio of animal a to d3 is 7-1. The daily dosage is 35,000iu of animal a to 5,000iu of d. Eskimos get this from blubber and liver. More is not more beneficial. Less is less beneficial. People also need some iodine and k2 for optimal functioning.

Hello guys! The daughter stated it was specifically "Mycellized Vitamin A". That comes in liquid form. The site where I order my herbs and supplements has this form of Vit A. It comes in a 1 oz. bottle. The brand name is Kirkman Labs. It's not expensive but not real cheap either. Should be affordable for most people. Thanks & God Bless!

Hi Everyone,

Sorry that I have not been on the site to answer questions. My password was not working and I couldn't find my post. But I got the problem fixed.

Some of you asked about the brand and amount of Vitamin A etc.

Here is what I used. Klaire Labs Micellized A drops. I gave her 100, 000 IU's for 3 weeks, then cut back to 20, 000 IU's for maintenance. Sorry about the typo on my previous post. It is IU's (not mg's). The doctor who wrote the article stated to not worry about the high doses of vitamin A. He says that he regularly puts patients on 100, 000 IU's or more for several months with no problems. But this protocol only calls for doing that for 3 weeks so you should have nothing to worry about. And of course the maintenance dose of 20, 000 needs to be continued for life.

Here are places that carry it online....

http://www.rockwellnutrition.com/Micellized-Vitamin-A-by-Claire-Labs.html

As for the coconut oil we try to give her 3 TBLS a day spread out throughout the day. We put in in her food over vegetables, on toast, cook eggs with it, etc.

Here is a super healthy recipe for using coconut oil that tastes like chocolate! The measurements are approximate as I don't measure when I make it.

SUPER HEALTHY CAROB COCONUT OIL RECIPE.....

In large bowl mix together about 1/2 cup (8 TBLS) coconut oil, 3 TBLS flax oil, a couple of spoonfuls of Chatfields Carob powder (put enough so that it doesn't look translucent anymore and looks like chocolate-if you put too much or too little it doesn't taste as good). Add unsweetened shredded coconut, and some cashews or walnuts broken into small pieces. Mix well. Then spread out on wax paper or parchment paper on top of a cookie sheet and FREEZE until hard. Then break off pieces and enjoy.

Hope this answers any questions. I will try to check my post for any future questions. Be well.

Thankyou for your post. I lost my own mother 18 months ago and wish with all my heart that we had known this and joined some dots. Maybe someone else will benefit. My family observed that every time my mother deteriorated, (over at least 8 years) which did not happen steadily but in bursts, that she had a strong distinctive smell around her body. I now think this was due to the urinary tract infections you describe which of course we knew she had too but never drew the connection. I have also read recently that silica in mineral water has been shown by researchers to reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer's and stave it off, they think by chelating aluminium. Interestingly, horsetail or equisetum, which has a lot of silica is traditionally used to treat urinary tract infections. Perhaps this is something else to try for your mother - some horsetail tea probably easier than the litre a day of silica water used by the researchers. We also had some success with coconut oil skin cream which 'woke' my mother up after 15 minutes or so in the later stages. I wish you all the best and thankyou for your insightful posts.

And do not want her on any phyco tropic medications. After reading your post I believe this may also work for her.I too have read many research studies trying to find something natural, as I believe it could be related to a vitamin deficency. A computerised tomography (CT) scan is not fullproof for detecting Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Having an older base scan to compare with a recent scan can be helpful. The CT scan is helpful to rule out other causes such as tumors.

Many conditions and prescription meds can cause dementia like symptoms and some are reversible. A review of your mother's meds for possible negative side effects or dementia like side effects seems like a reasonable first step to rule out medication adverse event as a possibility.

Sometimes a vitamin B-12 deficiency can cause similar symptomology as dementia, especially in the elderly, but that can be tested for or simply ask the doctor to give a B-12 injection to rule that possibility out. If there is noticeable improvement in mental function or clarity shortly after the injection, a deficiency may be the cause or a contributing factor and should be corrected to improve quality of life before further testing.

Hi Leslie,

My Father-in-law developed Alzheimer's disease, and he would also repreatedly say he wanted to go home, as if he was lost. My sister-in-law read that what he may have meant was that he wanted to go back to the way things used to be. You can imagine the safety and security that we felt as children around our Mothers and extended family, and for people who no longer recognize their own homes where they may have lived for decades, along with their spouses, a longing for that kind of childhood security would be very important to them. I found when I thought of his longing through this lens, it became more tolerable and I became more sympathetic. I understand how difficult this can be on everone involved. You are a blessing to your Mother.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a tough disease that is growing each year in the number of people it affects. Unfortunately the currently available medications are not very effective at treating the disease process and are even less effective for some people with AD. It is estimated that 5.7 million Americans are now living with AD!

https://www.alz.org/facts/

With the Baby Boomers now in the senior citizen range, the number of people with AD is expected to reach unprecedented proportions that could potentially bankrupt are medical system because of the tremendous costs involved in the care of AD patients. These costs will continue to rise over time.

Given the poor prognosis for AD patients in general with the currently available meds that are unable to stop the disease process, we need alternatives to act as adjunctive help to go along with the prescription meds.

On that note, the following study shows that a 12 week course of a specific probiotic treatment was able to improve some disease symptoms in the treated patients. What is good about this study is that it is an actual human study as opposed to a mouse or rat study because those models do not always equate to humans in a like manner. A good example of this was the niacinamide mouse study that was done at the University Of Irvine California that showed almost complete reversal of AD symptoms in the AD model mice. The results were so good that a human study was done shortly after the results from the mouse study were released. Unfortunately the human study showed only marginal benefit at best for people with AD.

Here is a link to the probiotic / AD study:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5105117/

Another great point to this study is that the positive results were seen in just 12 weeks! It makes you wonder if a longer study period would have produced even better results. Another great positive to this studies is that other health parameters were improved along with cognition!

Probiotics have a good safety profile, are readily available and the ones used in this study are not the exotic ones which are almost impossible to find when you search. This is great news for people living with this horrible disease that affects not only the patient, but their family, friends and caregivers negatively.

To add to my previous post about probiotics and AD, here is another article showing that curcumin, which is an active component derived from the spice turmeric is also useful for improving the symptoms of dementia.

This study was conducted at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) using twice daily dosing for 18 months. Here is a link to the article:

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/01/180123101908.htm

Again, this study is important because it was a double blind, placebo controlled study and because it is a human study as opposed to a rodent study and it showed benefit in the patients who received the curcumin compared to those who didn't!

Jacqueline,

That post is from five years ago making a reply from the original poster less likely.

Serrapeptase, Nattokinase and Lumbrokinase are all proteolytic enzymes that often show similar effects. In the case of dementia, to the best of my knowledge, there so far only in vitro, in silico and animal studies showing that these enzymes show the potential to degrade amyloid beta 1-42 as well as reduce its toxicity suggesting potential for use in AD and some dementias.

Here is a recent in vitro and in silico study suggesting as much :

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35694981/

Here is a relevant quote from the study :

' The findings of the present study indicated that LK and SP, not only had Aβ 1-42 amyloid degrading potential, but also could reduce the toxicity which can make them a suitable drug candidate for AD. Furthermore, the in vivo studies are needed to be executed in future. '
