[SIDE EFFECTS]  It's been a week that i've been using ACV with baking soda to lose weight. Instead, I've never been this tired. I have lost all the energy & slept most of the day. I STOPPED taking baking soda, & instead diluted 2tbl of acv with 1liter water, & 1/2 tsp. of salt. & drink it with straw. Without baking soda, I feel much better & energetic.

Maybe you should not use the baking soda, just use the Apple Cider Vinager. Try using one teaspoon in water twice a day instead. Sometimes in life less is more. Be sure to drink it with a straw or rinse and brush your teeth right away.

[SIDE EFFECTS]   Wondering if others have had this same experience . . . When I first started alkalizing, it didn't make me feel so good, when I used baking soda with my apple cider vinegar. Like you, I liked the vinegar alone in water better, even though that didn't feel quite right, either.

I used PH strips to find out I was way too alkaline. Long story short, I researched and decided that for me, it was a sign of a vitamin or mineral deficiency. I worked on this for awhile (with a good food based multi, colloidal minerals, Armour thyroid, and b- complex), and I started coming up consistently acidic like most people. It was exciting for me to go acidic, because then I knew I'd fixed the deficiency problem.

I've been able to take the baking soda/ACV combo with no problems now (it's helping with many problems).

I'm not sure that adding baking soda is for everyone, but I thought I'd share what worked for me. Also, don't drink tap water if possible.

[SIDE EFFECTS]  I have been suffering with Acid Reflux for a few months now. I am so thankful for your website. ACV Baking soda works great for me, specially in the morning. But, if I take after 6:00 PM, it keeps me awake all night. I already suffered with insomnia, and it aggrevates it more. Now, having a good night sleep is my problem. Ted, what can I do for that?

[SIDE EFFECTS]  Baking Soda remedy With all my experience, I can say the BS remedy is potentially harmful. I tried it and suffered bad consequences. Skin becoming dry, hair falling off in clumps and yeast infections.... Lemon Juice / ACV must be taken with just water. Our stomach is meant to be acidic and anything which tends to neutralise stomach acid is harmful and will prevent the absorption of nutrients. NO Baking Soda should be added. I am just wondering how many ppl might be harming their healths with BS..

[SIDE EFFECTS]  I am 58, have had a lifetime of stomach problems - now diagnosed with hiatal hernia/acid reflux, taking omeprazol, 40mg a day, main problem is always have loose stools and worst very sore eosophagus/throat, had biopsy on what looked like Barrets but negative. However, dont like taking pills, tried 2 tbls acv with 1/4 tsp bicarb soda in 1/2 glass water for 5 days lst thing and last thing at night on empty stomach - also did oil pulling - immediately on drinking the remedy my eosophagus/throat hurt even with bicarb added, my mouth which has burned, esp my tongue, for 10 yrs, became even more sore and the "runs" worsened. first I thought it would improve but I couldnt sleep at all, felt agitated and as I have very high BP which medication isnt helping, I decided to go back on the stomach pills. Having read peoples positive results I felt sure acv would help me with my stomach/BP and high cholestorol - I eat a very healthy diet, dont smoke, exercise, am slim, I really dont know what to do next or why this acv works for so many and makes me worse - if anyone has any ideas Id be grateful? Thank you. Jaques

[SIDE EFFECTS]  I want to point something about the Baking Soda remedy for increasing the alkalinity of body. Unfortunately, this remedy worked for me in the beginning, as I noticed improved digestion, but then I noticed I came down with a chronic case of Bacterial Vaginosis. A fishy odor coming from the vagina. I have heard, women who are on Birth Control Pill get BV. But I have never used BCPs. Further reading, I found out that Baking Soda, and for that matter most antacids can lead to the depletion of B-vitamins in the body. (including Folic Acid & B12). And no wonder Folic Acid is recommended as a cure for BV. I am taking Folic Acid ( 1 mg) and B-complex now, but the fishy odor is not gone completely! I am really stuck with this odor which I NEVER had before. So could it be, my folic acid levels are depleted and I am unable to get them to a healthy level. As of now, I am suspecting Baking Soda has done this to me. And I am abstaining from using it anymore. I would be interested to hear what other female users have to say about this.

[SIDE EFFECTS]   Just wanted to put in my .02cents. I was taking the ACV Baking Soda tonic three times a day. It's ironic now that I think about it, the way our bodies talk to us, the last few times I took the recipe, (and I'm very used to the taste of the ACV/BS tonic) my nose would turn up at the smell, it smelled furmented, almost like old wine. Then I got a yeast/BV infection...and after research and trial and error, I realized that what Sandhi mentioned was true, too much BS can reverse the body's alkaline and actually make it too acidic. So, after curing the Yeast infection with Hydrogen Peroxide, yogurt and water (monostat DID NOT WORK) and quitting the Baking soda, I feel much better. Every once in a while if I feel heartburny I'll add BS to my ACV, but I skip the BS most days and just take ACV and feel much better!

[SIDE EFFECTS]   To Sandhi/Tracy: Yea or Nay??? I started using 4 tbsp BS to 8 oz water for constipation. I used it about once a week for months. Worked fine initially, but eventually totally stopped working. One day had a sense of fullness, went to restroom and passed 2 thumb-sized white shiny looking pellets that were floating. It frightened me to no end so I put on gloves and fished them out to carry to my MD. They looked hard but didn't add up to the floating. I decided to squeeze one over a piece of plastic and it broke. Looked like an accumulation of baking soda (powdery form) inside some type of membrane that was keeping it waterproofed. It amazed me but I totally stopped using BS. This is the puzzlig part. I've suffered with stomach problems for 30 years. Started out diagnosed as duodenal ulcers ended up as acid reflux. I was put on different types of meds to include intensive antibiotic treatments for H-Pylori bacteria. I ended up using only Aciphex. I couldn't explain why about a year ago I stopped having stomach pains and indigestion. I never gave it anymore thought until I came across this website and realized it was around the time I started taking the BS remedy that I stopped having pain. I'm wondering if it was the BS and if it cured my Acid Reflux because I've been pain free and off all stomach meds for over a year. I eat spicy foods, dairy products, fried foods, all without any bloating or pain.

Response to Netsy: Baking soda is not a complete remedy, but it has good consistency with acid reflux. It works best when I take vitamin B complex once a week plus ocassional vitamin C such as twice or three times a week, of vitamin C. The baking soda does not reduce the b complex but the body could be low on potassium that is causing the problem since the baking soda is meant to reduce the acid reflux in general. No remedy will work forever, if that were the case a complete nutrition plan is needed, in any event a potassium citrate is needed for longer term users. Hence, the remedy that is more complete is:

1/4 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/4 teaspoon of potassium citrate in 1 glass of water.

The remedy is usually taken 5 days a week. So I might be assuming, right or wrong that potassium was not added, vitamin C was not taken or possibly b complex. Ted

P.S. The white shiny objects deserves a special mentioned. What happens is if I eat an oxalic rich food, such as shellfish, beans, nuts, spinach etc. and it goes into my stomach acid, it becomes oxalic acid. The oxalic acid, if the body doesn't have sufficient amount of sodium bicarbonate to neutralize them, the oxalic acid enters the bloodstream and reacts with the blood calcium to form calcium oxalate. Interestingly the calcium oxalates in turns accumulates in the kidney to become kidney stones. But even more interestingly, it can enter a woman's ovaries and destroy the ovaries to cause a somewhat permanent condition called PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) in which the calcium oxalates, for example blocks normal process of ovaries and produce uterus pain. However, if the baking soda was taken and the food eaten is high in oxalic acid, the baking soda neutralizes this to become sodium oxalate and prevents it from entering the bloodstream and shows up as a white shiny material. Hence instead of becoming calcium oxalates in the kidneys to become kidney stones, or calcification of the ovaries, for instance (thyroid calcification is even more damaging leading to a more malignant form of tumor), is safely rid of by the body as a sodium oxalate, and if the dietary oxalic acid were also high with calcium diets, the baking soda would once again neutralize them and may form some calcium oxalates, and sodium oxalates from entering the blood stream. So in my opinion the baking soda offers a protective mechanism against calcification of tissue. That said, a modern man diet is already way deficient in three for for elements compared against the paleolithic diet, one is that our evolutionary process are geared for higher consumption of bicarbonates, more omega 3, and potassium, all of which are the cause of a lot of our sickness.

I was thrilled to find this site, with simple remedies that work for many. I started to put together the ACV with baking soda in water and then found my baking soda was outdated, so I just drank what I had, sipping it all day and even brushing my teeth after drinking it. This evening I came back and read in posts from Ted and others that ACV alone damages tooth enamel, which is a problem I already have. I couldn't believe I got too caught up in trying out the treatment to think of this on my own. Now I'm afraid to try the ACV again--and posts about side effects from baking soda make me wary, too. I'm also having second thoughts about using lemon juice instead of ACV, since lemons are also acidic.

Is there any way to repair damage to tooth enamel?

It would be helpful to have the huge amount of information here more orderly, so we could link directly to both agreeing and disagreeing posts right away.

EC: A post on the subject from the following page: http://www.earthclinic.com/remedies/acvinegar3.html

03/22/2007: Nathan from Portland, OR writes: "Let me add to Dr. Yong's comments regarding tooth enamel (and point out why William Campbell Douglas was misinformed). Acid damages tooth enamel. Pathogenic bacteria in the mouth produce acid as a byproduct when they consume sugar. So when you drink ACV, you expose your teeth to acid. When you eat products with high sugar content, the bacteria produce acid. Neither of these situations is necessarily deleterious to the tooth enamel if the exposure to the acid is over a short period of time. Saliva is able to cleanse the mouth, and the pH returns to normal. However, if you sip the ACV over a long period of time during the day, the pH of the mouth is unable to recover, and as a result of constant prolonged exposure, dental decay results.

The same amount of ACV ingested over a period of a few minutes will typically cause no problems. Yes, we eat/drink acidic/sugary foods all the time (as the MD mentioned) but these are the things that cause decay especially if sipped or ingested in large quantities over long periods of time. Try to consume your ACV 3 times per day within a period of 5-10 minutes."

[SIDE EFFECTS]  Thank you for sharing your knowledge on earthclinic.com. It has helped me in many ways. I have been doing the 2tbs acv 1/4 baking soda in water for almost three weeks. It has helped my migraines and joint aches as well as helped with my overall mental well being. However a side effect I have is that since taking this I have become increasingly tired. So much that I can not get out of bed or feel safe to drive or work. I began taking this remedy to try to help in regulating my menstrations and hormones. I've begun taking B-complex hoping this would give me added energy but it has not. I am wondering if I should lower dosages of acv or stop this remedy entirely. Thank You

[SIDE EFFECTS]  I have a few questions in regards to the remedies suggested on the earth clinic website: 1. have been taking ACV alone without any problem until adding baking soda which causes abdominal pain throughout the night...

[SIDE EFFECTS]  This is the 2nd time I'm posting this question. As well, I sent a message to Ted, and I haven't gotten any responses yet. I started taking ACV & baking soda about 2 weeks ago, and it IMMEDIATELY stopped my acid reflux (for which my symptom is a burning sore throat)!! Wonderful! However, I have Ulcerative Colitis (which is in remission) and have been experiencing diarrhea. I took the ACV * baking soda first thing in the AM , then had my low-acid coffee, and about an hour later, had severe "D". My question is, could the ACV be causing my diarrhea.?? I don't know what else it could be? I'm concerned that my UC might be flaring up, yet, it's helping my acid reflux...

[SIDE EFFECTS]  Hi i recently discovered your website and found it very informative. My aunt always used to talk about the goodness in Apple Cider Vinegar. When I read about using it with baking soda I tried it and found I really liked it in fizzy form. However, in about two weeks I began to suffer from the driest skin I have ever had! A friend who is into natural remedies told me it was the baking soda that was causing this. I immediately quit adding it to the ACV and using it to clean my face daily and began to re-hydrate myself. Now a few days later I still have some itching of the skin but it is improving. Was I using too much? I was taking about 1/4-1/2 a teaspoon in my ACV 3x a day. I would like to say that I noticed an immediate sensation of well being and boost in my energy as soon as I started with the ACV. I'm going to keep on taking it, even though I won't be using the baking soda any more! Gail

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  I started using Ted's recipe (ACV and baking soda) yesterday afternoon in hopes to get rid of a bad sinus infection I've had for the past couple of weeks. I mixed 1 Tbsp of ACV with 8 oz of water and 1 tsp of baking soda. The heaviness in my head and the sinus congestion went away in minutes! I will continue to take ACV with the baking soda. I will keep everyone updated on my progress.

[YEA]  I have been taking 2 tablesoons of ACV (with mother) and 1/4 tsp of Baking soda with about 1/2 cup of warm water for about two weeks twice a day for general health reasons. This morning I woke up and was struck by how soft my skin felt. I also think I may be experiencing less water retention. I had what I think was AWFUL candida die off symptoms for about a week though, chills, mucus you name it it was AWFUL but it seems to be dying down.

What specifically was the baking soda/ACV treatment that you used successfully for your skin?

Thanks.

[YEA]  Skin Care - Dry Scaly Patches: I had some dry scaly skin on my nose and about for an inch or so on either side of my nose. I have been using a mixture of ACV, Baking Soda, and Water for a about a week and a half. I use about 1/4 tablespoon of BS and ACV till the bubbling stops. then I add just enough water to complete filling a small cup About 3 inches high, 1/2 full. I wash my face with this and leave it on for about a minute and then rinse it off. My skin on my nose and by my nose is now very soft and is no longer dry. I also found that when shaving with a razor that this mixture lubricated my skin and I did not get any cuts. I pieced this mixture together from reading about several items from this site. I love www.earthclinic.com

[YEA]  Re: ACV and baking soda: I've lost track of exactly how long but it should be about 3weeks that I have been trying ACV...I first tried it w/water and Cayenne Pepper..thinking of reduction in weight loss and HBP, i can say that i feel better not as tired as usual (not running any marathons yet) and I do see a diffence in my skin. And to add to it i've begun to wash with backing soda and water, and i must say that my face does feel smoother and not as oily. My question is how do i figure the right recipe for me?...i see so many variations of it. I would like to work on my blood pressure, weight and blood suger levels.

[YEA]  ACV cures my bloating and hunger pain. Baking soda did wonders for me cure my acid reflux, bad breath, and sinus. I also use ACV and baking soda for my face as others mentioned on this site. My face looks great without foundation. No dark circles and puffy eyes. The information on this website save me from many health problems. Thank you so much to all the people who contribute to this awesome site and a Big thanks goes to Ted in Bangkok who seems to have such wealth of knowledge.

Blood pressure and most modern diseases is that more than 90% of the foods eaten are acid forming and this tends to cause the food to stay in our stomach much longer than it is needed. When eating alkaline forming foods or sodium bicarbonate, the foods simply stay in the stomach LESS longer, solves constipation and thereby reducing weight, puffy eyes, blood pressure and other common problems. The colder the weather the more important it is to alkalize, since cold pressure and high blood pressure occurs more often because tiny blood vessels constrict. Diuretics and blood lowering medicine works on the principle on being alkaline formers, therefore lowering blood pressure, but this can be done safely just giving a chance by taking alkaline forming foods.
