| Modified on May 14, 2023

Now here's an unusual remedy for laryngitis that you might have heard of: black bean soup! According to one of our contributors, black bean soup is eaten by Japanese singers before a performance. You can read her post below, but first we thought we'd provide you with a yummy recipe for black bean miso soup!

What You Need:

  • 3 cups boiling water
  • 15 ounces Organic Black Soybeans, 1 can, drained, reserve liquid
  • 1 Tbsp fresh ginger root, minced
  • 1/2 cup carrots, trimmed and sliced into rounds
  • 2 tsp Wakame Flakes
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Miso, or to taste

Instructions

Bring water to a boil. Add ginger, and carrot. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the wakame flakes and black beans and cook uncovered at a gentle boil for 1 more minute.

Meanwhile, ladle about 1/8 cup of the hot soup liquid into a cup or bowl and dissolve the miso in it. Just before serving, turn the heat to low, add the miso, stir and simmer, without boiling for 2 to 3 minutes. Dissolve, taste, and add more miso if so desired.

Re getting your voice back -- After hearing that Japanese opera singers eat black bean soup before performing I tried it for severe laryngitis. I'm a soprano and was singing bass. After trying the black bean soup I was up to alto in one day and back to soprano in two.
