Glyconutrients

Updated: 06/24/2008

"Glyconutrient is a term used by the multi-level marketing company Mannatech, and other supplement vendors, to describe dietary supplements that contain a blend of simple sugars (monosaccharides) which are found in glycoproteins.

As Mannatech uses the term in labeling many of its products, glyconutrient refers to mixtures of polysaccharides, such as exudate tree gums and high molecular weight aloe vera extracts containing fermentable dietary fiber and plant extracts, as well as simple sugars or starch. The company's SEC filing more precisely identifies the contents of Ambrotose, its lead product, as "a glyconutritional dietary supplement ingredient consisting of a blend of monosaccharides, or sugar molecules." In the marketing literature, these sugars are said to be a blend and the precursors of the following eight simple sugars: Xylose, Fucose, Galactose, Glucose, Mannose, N-acetylgalactosamine, N-acetylglucosamine, and N-acetylneuraminic acid.

The glyconutrients are identified in the textbook Harper's Biochemistry as providing the composition for glycoprotein structures which are the basis for cell-to-cell communication." (Wikipedia)

Mannose is avail. at most health stores & is very good for bacterial infections that cling to mucous membranes especially urinary tract . I have recommended it for BPH & am still gathering results & will share.Your mushroom sugar info. is very well put. New Chapters has a product called LIfe shield which contains 3 major mushrooms formulated by the master Paul Stamets. It is sucessful against 5-6 super viral diseases which include 2-strains of bird flu. This product is curiously listed with the Dept. of Defence. To help with blood sugar "rush" try chromium picolinate to help out the pancreas. Out."

After continued serious use of the so-called sugars, my bloodwork, a good measure of what's going on in the body, evidenced significant improvement to where almost all measurements are within the normal range. Considering the fact my WBC was twice the normal range, with lymphocyte percentage 60% now down to 26%, I could care less about any negative press."

EC: We emailed Jim asking what so-called sugars he was referring to...

In addition, I want to mention in this email response that I am a volunteer certified "First Connections" consultant, with emphasis on alternative options (at the request of the upstate NY/Vermont Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) because of my positive experience with the supplements I take. Hope this clarifies it better for you. Like your site already."

My mom is blind in on eye and has 40% vision in the other eye. It has not yet been 2 weeks and already she can read without her glasses on. My mom is 82 and Glaucoma would've lead to blindness. We are thrilled with the results."

[YEA]  10/24/2007: David (johnsmit40@yahoo.com) from Lenoir, North Carolina writes: "Glyconutrients: I first heard about them a number of years ago in Ray Gebauer's book. How to Cure and Prevent Any Disease. A mixture of curiousity and suspicion on my part. As he describes his disoveries on how to elimimate a variety of medical problems he had struggled with over the years, 99% of which were simply because of bad habits, he quickly gave credit to Dr. Gunter Blobel's discoveries of immune system deficiencies and identifying 8 specific types of sacharrides, or sugars, our immune systems MUST have, to be fully funcitonal. And his winning of 4 Nobel Prizes in Medicine for making that discovery. And the 4 doctors in Texas that teamed up im locating sources for them & put them altogether. Thus developing the Glyconutrients, which are now in the Physicians Desk Reference Manuel. But of which I am hearing NOTHING ABOUT ? !!!!!!!! The most staggering evidence to me was I checked online not too long ago and somewhat stunned there was not a SINGLE NEGATIVE story or report of them, OF ANY KIND !!!!!! That's UNHEARD of these days. ALL prescription drugs have SOME side affects. Apparently Dr. Blobel's winning of 4 Nobel Prizes means nothing to those whom are taking the manufacture to court."

10/30/2007: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "There are a couple of things I have to clear up before discussing "glyconutrient":

1. The word glyconutrient is a misnomer. The word is coined by an MLM (multi-level-marketing). Glyconutrient is not proven that it is essential for humans. To use this term, we will be promoting mannatech. We need to find other terms.

2. Nobel prize winners linking to glyconutrient is misquoted. They never claim that it is as such, see below article.

3. Do these essential sugars work? Yes and no. Certain sugar works but not all 8 "essential sugars" but this misses the other sugars that have antibiotic potentials too, the so called polyol sugar, or sugar alcohols, such as mannitol (reduction of head injury), and xylitol (an alcohol form of sugar alcohol which has proven antibiotic potentials against osteoarthritis.

Hence, a potential topic that is best discussed to be put up for proper discussion might be "sugar cures".

These sugar that have possible therapeutic potentials includes (in my opinion) where this list is not complete:

1. Any form of sugar with a mineral attached. Zinc gluconate and magnesium gluconate both have antibiotic potentials. Boron gluconate would have antifungal forms. Sugars generally goes through the blood brain barrier easier and kill off the virus, such as a bird flu viruses, or AIDS viruses when tends to hide in these area where most medicine cannot reach.

2. Sugar Alcohol (Polyols), which includes many, but the most interesting ones, at least for me are the mannitol and xylitol. The complete list is Arabitol, Erythritolm Glycol, Glycerol, Mannitol, Sorbitol, Isomalt, Maltitol, Lactitol, and Xylitol. They all have some antibiotic potentials, although the xylitol, mannitol and the sorbitol is most commonly studied.

3. Organic sugar. The so called 8 "essential sugars" from marketing literature are: Xylose, Fucose, Galactose, Glucose, Mannose, N-acetylgalactosamine, N-acetylglucosamine, and N-acetylneuraminic acid. However, in practice not all of them are used, and I suspect an alchol sugar form is what kills the bacteria for some sugars such as xylose, its alchohol form is xylitol. Mannose, its alcohol form is mannitol, which is actually an oxidized form. So my assumption is if some sugar are oxidized, and it is this oxidized form (by the body) that may have some antibiotic potentials against CFS and other condition. For example an alcohol form of xylose, xylitol has certain antifungal potentials, that were found to be useful in osteoarthritis, arthritis, rheumatism, and even cavities. Xylitol works better and safer than fluoride.

4. Acetyl Sugar, where the acetate portion is attached to the sugar, such as , N-acetylgalactosamine, N-acetylglucosamine, and N-acetylneuraminic acid. Of course zinc acetate, magnesium acetate, are other interesting forms too. It seems the body can utilize the acetate portion better, especially intracellularly. If an acetate portion attaches itself to amino acids, the amino acids sometimes become much more easily for the body to assimilate, such as Acetyl L Carnosine, Acetyl Carnitine, for example. Acetyl Carnosine for example is used in eyedrops to reverse cataract, but l carnosine are poorly absorbed. Amino acid in general if reacted with anhydride acetic acid (much like a vinegar, only much more concentrated) causes the amino acid to become an acetyl amino acids which are more bioavailable. A simple analogy to make the amino acid acetyl form, even though it is small, is to add vinegar (dilute form of acetic acid) to the soy sauce (a solution of amino acid). It is much like adding vinegar 50/50 to the Braag's Amino acid added to your food for general health.

Therefore, instead of calling it glyconutrients, sugar cures or sugar therapy is a more appropriate word but it depends on what kinds of sugar, and what form of sugar. The other problem is the company that sells the product actually use Ambrotose. And the term and usages of glyconutrient has a patent ownership by Mannatech.

So I prefer to avoid the direct use of the term and just discuss sugar with therapeutic potentials (sugar therapy, or sugar cures). But the sugar with therapeutic potentials I am not saying it is sucrose or fructose, but more in line with other forms of sugar that help with other conditions such as CFS, cavity protection, arthritis. These sugar that I have generally used were mostly sugar extracted from aloe plant, sugars extracted from seaweed and sugars from a japanese mushroom, for example. The other sugar are mineral sugars, such as zinc gluconate, magnesium gluconate, boron gluconate and copper gluconate.

As to certain remedies that I have close knowledge that has helped was the use of alkalization along with the use of sugar alcohols especially xylitol. It seems the use of sugar therapy, needs alkalization as the sugar seems to dissociate to cause the body to be acidic. This is especially the case with mannitol, where the hydrogen component, which causes the acidity, dissociates fairly easily causing the solution to become acidic, and it needs baking soda to neutralize the acidity.

Finally the problem I have with the current marketing practices is the price. It would make more sense if we make them ourselves from

1. Mannose. From aloe vera. It contains acemannan. 2. Glucose. We don't need this. The body produce plenty of that. If you still want it, most drug stores will have it, labeled as "Glucose". 3. Galactose. Funugreek.

4. Xylose. Xylose is from kelp. Although I think an alchol form, xylitol might be more therapeutic.

5. N-acetylglucosamine. hiitake Mushroom has N-acetylglucosamine 6. Dumontiaceae has N-acetylgalactosamine. 7. Fucose. Kelp seaweed 8. N-acetylneuraminic acid. whey protein isolate.

In my opinion taking shiitake mushroom, aloe vera, and kelp has about equal effectiveness as a more commercial ones. Although I would have added other polyols and mineral gluconate, I think it would work better. Most of the healing of the skin as witnessed by the so called glyconutrients, in my personal opinion actually came from allantoin, which can have amazing skin healing and bone healing, which is found in aloe vera, comfrey and snails. Of course, I do take a small amount of allantoin now and then to help with by joint pains. What is so strange about allantoin is only a very tiny amount is actually needed. So all these sugar cure may in fact, part of it coming from the trace allantoin found in some of these commercial products. Comfrey poultrice, for example, is used traditionally to help with broken bones and aloe vera is well known in the use against bones. I suspect it is the allantoin which is having some dramatic regeneration and healing. One dramatic example, without the commecial form of glyconutrient is the skin condition of AIDS patient from just the use of aloe vera applied and taken internally, sometimes along with olive leaf extract to help their recovery from skin problems, which within weeks, the skin were almost normal.
