Sandy from Scotland, United Kingdom writes: "I found this site through searching for information on Cold Showers. Very interesting material indeed. I am well into my 60's and keep running/jogging and have 'enjoyed' a Cold Shower for quite some time. Can I expand your thinking on water? Ten or so years ago I read the book - "Your Body's Many Cries for Water". I have found it so helpful. Drinking water is quite therapeutic I have discovered. I have studied this work and if you need a 'free' and perhaps unusual 'help' read this work. Consider it seriously."

PHOENIX'S WATER THERAPY PROTOCOL

The_phoenix from Towsville, Australia writes: "Does anyone have any experience with protocols for water therapy, or cures?

I am studying all aspects of 'water health'. Before diving into the books I decided to find out how my body responded to 'water supplementation'. I wanted to test my bodies reaction to additional water before my ideas were too influenced by others.

The 'water philosophy', that I am testing is:

- that hydration is an important basis for good health (so how do we know if we are sufficiently hydrated)?
- while the body has mechanisms to automatically maintain water homeostasis 'we' still have to play our part by responding to the messages it sends us (the body does not speak english so what language does it use to prompt us to meet our fundamental nutritional requirements ... considering water as an essential nutrient or mineral)?

Note that, generally speaking, we do not have access to laboratory testing e.g. for mineral sufficiency, on a day by day basis, so we need to develop some rules of thumb to guide us between our regular blood tests.

- beyond our need to maintain hydration, water may be useful for therapeutic and/or medicinal pruposes but how much water does that require and what form should we take it in (distilled, electrolyte replenished etc).

For this experiment I tested my sensitivity to water sufficient signals and also my tolerance for water supplementation above and beyond that required for sufficiency.

(Don't do this at home, kids!)

- I am a 58 yr old male, 175 cm and approx 80 kg
- I have no life threatening or severe illnesses
- I follow a moderate excercise regime
- I live in a hot climate with current temps maxing around 30-40 C with high humidity
- usually most of my liquid intake is filtered water plus 1 coffee per day plus fresh fruit or vegetable juices (occasionally I add a bottled fruit juice, ginger beer or 1 - 2 classes of alcohol)
- I usually avoid drinking with meals and delay drinking after meals as long as possible
- before a meal I make sure I am hydrated so that I don't have to drink again for a while
- if I feel thirsty after eating I drink a little water
- every evening I drink a small amount of water with a flat teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda in it
- typically my diet is moderately healthy and I eat moderate amounts, at regular intervals, so I consume a reasonable amount of wet food (a source of water)
- I am developing a system of 'body alertness' or listening to the body, and I find that with practise it is a very reliable indicator of health status and needs
- generally I don't like to drink more than around 500 mls at a time (my bodies response tells me it just doesn't want it) so this tells me I am close to hydro sufficiency most of the time (under normal circumstances)

Note that my stomach doesn't hang over my belt so it is not permanently stretched and so it is probably around normal size (approx 1 - 1.5 litres when distended)
- I haven't ever totalled the amount of water I drink but I guess it would be up to 2 litres/day (on a non excercise day)
- I don't consume a lot of salt (no processed foods) and use sea salt or vegetable salts for flavouring)

The experiment:

- the test was conducted over a 5 day period
- day 2 involved 6 hours manual work, in the sun, and on day 3 I went canoeing for 2 hours in the heat of the day ... day 1, 4 and 5 involved office work in air conditioning
- I started by making sure I was drinking to sufficiency i.e. I drank adequate amounts between and just before meals (I felt water satisfied and wasn't dying for a drink).
- I did notice a feeling of well being when I was definitely hydrated
- then I added an extra class of water half an hour before meals == 3 or 4 * 500 mls of extra water (I didn't feel like drinking it and I had to force the issue ... I felt full and disinterested in the water)
- when I was active in the heat I had a water bottle and sipped around 1 -2 litres of extra water (ice cold)
- I also took several teaspoons of a 'high performance' sports supplement during the periods of activity (note that I was working and excercising hard enough to be sweating profusely) .. the supplement contained Sodium, Calcium, Potassium and Magnesium (K and Mg were present in the highest concentration) ... I didn't take the recommended amounts because I have a bias against salt (maybe I better rethink that one) however I do get quite a bit of Na via Sodium Bicarb
- I also increased the amount of water that I took with the evening BS to one small class (for the first time in decades I woke in the night and had to pee in the night ... both are unusual for me)
- naturally enough I started to pee more, throughout the day, and I did notice a little soreness, with unusual feelings in the penis/bladder/urethra area (not sure which) after day 1 ... this feeling became rather odd after 3 days
- on the evening of day three I started to feel water sick.

The symptoms were:
a) cold and clammy sections of my body (especially the scrotum and man boobs .. the chest was cold to touch while I was sweating at the same time)
b) a wierd disorientated feeling (it really does feel as if your insides and brain are turning to water)

- I immediately stopped supplementing the water and reduced my intake to normal (or just below)
- I still felt thirsty and couldn't assuage the desire to drink more water
- I made sure that there was salt in the meals I took (normally I don't add it all up but I think that perhaps I will start to account for this more)
- I dipped a wet finger in sea salt and put a small amount of salt on the top of my tounge (it tasted as sweet as sugar) ... much later when I repeated this the salt tasted salty or slightly bitter (not as sweat this time)
- as soon as I put a little salt on my tounge the crazy thirst disappeared (within approx 15-30 mins)
- the symptoms lasted for another two days during which I maintained normal water levels and continued the salt supplementation, via the tounge (I only did this occasionally so as not to put the body through rapid or extreme changes).

Provisional summary and miscellaneous thoughts:

The rational of water therapy is that parts of the body can be water starved, due to underhydration, and that restoring correct hydration will heal these areas and remove any pain associated with them e.g. gout depositions might dissolve away. On top of that the water is believed to flush toxins from the body (there could be other benefits but I will keep to the mainstream theories for this post). Generally the proponents of water therapy recommend drinking quite large amounts of water, say 4 litres and above. Drinking amounts above approx 4 litres per day is considered risky by orthodox medicine. I found that amounts of around that magnitude did not work for me. I assume that tolerance varies from indidual to individual (in my case I am on a relatively low salt diet, already quite well hydrated and consume above ave amounts of watery food).

I also have an attitude that salt i.e. Sodium Chloride is bad for health and so it is possible that this notion is incorrect and that, on a day to day basis I am running close to Na deficiency (this suspicion of salt is part of popular culture, especially health food culture, so I might not be alone in this regard).

Against that argument is the fact that my blood serum levels of Na are always normal when tested.

Referencing hyponatremia (salt deficiency) on Wikipedia I read that known deaths, due to sodium deficiency in conjunction with high water intake, are mainly confined to people who are undertaking extreme excercise so it appears it is not wise to perform water therapy and excercise, or work hard physically, at the same time.

Generally the body retains salt quite well (it shuts down Na elimination at the kidney if the body is salt stressed) but heat stress seems to push the body beyond its capacity to manage this i.e. the real problem starts when we start to sweat and lose salts with the perspiration ... without that possibly, IMO, the body might be able to manage the incremental amounts of water.

People who are chronically underhydrated or have excessive salt intake or a build up of salt in the body e.g. uric acid salts, are more likely to benefit from water supplementation than others.

When the body signals for water intake, under condtions of good hydration, the 'thirst' is easily assuaged. Under extreme conditions (heat and dehydration) salt deficiency presents as thirst and the thirst can not be slaked by water alone.

The causes of water sickness, or intoxication, may not be due to Na losses (or at least not entirely due to salt losses). It is possible that other factors are involved e.g. continuing to drink, when heat stressed, may overfill the stomach and 'force' water into the duodenum (possibly this puts the intestinal track into an abnormal state and or trigger hormonal responses). As a hypothesis I am considering the possibility that the tounge is the sense organ of the nutrients we consume i.e. it tells the 'brain' what food we have just consumed (providing we chew our food or at least place it on the tounge). This leads to the theory that taking our sports supplement from a sip bottle bypasses the tounge and so Na induced thirst continues, leading to watery duodenums.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this subject?

YOGIC WATER TREATMENT

[YEA] Ruma from Calcutta, India writes: "Try my yogic water treatment. It will have you feeling better and looking rejuvenated in a matter of days.

When you wake up, try and drink at least a glass of water on an empty stomach. In a hot climate, you may try and work your way to two glasses of water. This is not as easy as it sounds. Don't worry if it takes a few days to get to your target amount of water.

Having finished drinking your water, stand up gently and stretch your hands above your head as far as they will go. Stand on your tiptoes to elongate the stretch. If you are feeling slightly sluggish (very possible since this is first thing in the morning), walk around the room on your tiptoes with your hands stretched in the air. Otherwise, you can just stretch up and then down again. Do this for a couple of minutes and then gently lower yourself to the floor, lowering your hands as well.

Then stand with your feet apart and stretch gently from side to side. Do this a couple of times but do so gently.

Last of all, with your feet slightly apart, stretch your hands to the side. Pretend you have a piece of cloth held tight in your hands and stretched behind you. Twist around to face backwards and try and keep this imaginary cloth as taut as possible. If you find this stretch too easy, then let go off the "cloth" at the end moment and grab one hand on one of your shoulders and the other on the side of the rib cage. Do this a couple of times each side.

This entire routine should take no longer than four or five minutes. The idea behind this is that the water that you drink hydrates and cleans out your internal organs, rejuvenating your body and bringing light and life to your face.

After I began to drink 2 liters of water a day with about a teaspoon of added crystal sea salt (non refined), I found that on the 3rd day my skin felt soft and supple. I shower in hot water (not warm) on cold mornings and that used to dry my skin to the point of terrible itchiness all over the body including my butts and I either had to satisfy myself (satisfaction = a scratch for every itch) or I had to apply mosturizing cream all over my body. I could see dry dead cells fall of my chest and abdomen area every time I removed my banian or T-Shirt.

I no longer have any visible dry and/or flaky skin and the skin feels smooth & supple. My butts feel very soft to the touch. My skin now glows and is radiant. I guess I am done with moisturizers (no more of harmful chemicals to be rubbed on my skin). Also, I sleep better at night.

Was prescribed Nexium, took it for two weeks while researching acid reflux on the web. I concluded that acid is necessary for proper digestion. A Dr, Spreen wrote that the problem is low acid, especially for older people, he recommended juicing some ginger and taking a teaspoon a day. I found the ACV info and tried it with some success. I tried raspberry vinegar, it helps also. I tried Betain HCL pills and Twin Labs super enzyme caps with food, if it is fatty two pills work well. putting any vinegar on food helps me. Some people dip bread in fancy vinegars. Dr. Batmanj??? cured everything with water while he was in jail. If I have an acid attack during the day I start drinking water and keep on drinking it until the pain stops; it has always worked, sometimes it takes three half liter bottles. The LEF site claims Limonine cures some people."

[YEA] Max from Atlanta, Ga writes: "I\'ve been a vegetarian for many years. And although I\'m not 100% vegan, I rarely eat dairy (except yougurt). I get plenty of exercise and I don\'t smoke and I rarely drink (red wine once a month). In spite of all this, I have been suffering from CFS for the last 7 years. Through diligence and hard work, many of the symptoms have slowly faded away. Recently, I got one of Kevin Trudeau\'s books and in that book he talks alot about the wonders of apple cider vinegar and pure distilled water. I\'ve also researched this on the net and it all seems to be true. So for the last two weeks I\'ve been drinking 8 full glasses of distilled water everyday and I\'ve been taking 2 tablespoons of vinegar a day. I\'ve noticed some obvious improvements. The most significant thing that I noticed is that I no longer have such dry skin and my scalp isn\'t flaky anymore. Also, it seems I\'m sleeping better and I don\'t crave sweets has been lessened. Nonetheless, in spite of all the good news, I\'ve been experiencing something that\'s totally unexpected and very unusual. I\'m constipated. I\'ve never had a problem with constipation. Even in my worst days with CFS I was never constipated. But now, every other day it seems I\'m struggling to get something to come out. This is really baffling to me because I\'m drinking more water than ever before and I have more energy, yet I\'m suffering from constipation. Do you know what may be causing this?"

[YEA] Carol from Cumberland, MD writes: "The first time my sister was pregnant she tried every product she could find for constipation. During her second pregnancy I suggested she drink seltzer water. I had read about it in a magazine. I also had cravings for seltzer water during my last 2 pregnancies and never had any problems with constipation. She told me she didn\'t like the taste and couldn\'t drink it. A few weeks later she let slip she was mixing it with juice and was actually regular for once."
