BUYING TURMERIC CAPSULES - WARNING!

07/21/2008: If you decide to buy turmeric capsules, please read all the ingredients on the packaging! We recently bought a bottle Turmeric Curcumin at the chain GNC for $21.99 (gulp!) because so many of our readers mentioned buying capsules instead of powder in the spice section of a grocery store for $3-$4. We got the bottle home and inspected it more. We were quite dismayed to see Dicalcium Phosphate and Maltodextrin listed as "Other Ingredients". Reported side effects of Malodextrin are bloating and headaches. The caveats and side effects of Dicalcium Phosphate are reported here: http://www.superglisodin.com/dcp.html.

Wikipedia's official opinion is the same:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium_hydrogen_phosphate

"Our position appears to be contrary to the majority of manufacturers and distributors of nutritional products. our decision is based on research and years of experience watching results of dietary supplement intake on hair mineral analysis reports. The Origin of DCP Mined from deposits within the earth's crust, calcium phosphate is known by many synonyms such as "lime," "hardware lime," "calcium lime" or "dolomite." Mixed samples of the substance may have a high percentage of impurities imbedded in them which may be harmful."

01/11/2010: Anon from Brazil replies: "Be VERY suspicious of Wikipedia! It's a great starting point for research, but it's already tainted.

One example: natural treatments for AIDS or anything that questions the role of HIV in AIDS. If you look at the edit history, you can see that anything that is not mainstream is immediately removed. You can also see that AIDS articles uses tactics such as name calling and personal attacks, which is typical of people that cannot hold up an open discussion free of bias, and can only defend non-sense dogma. After all, you can't attack the issue, then you have to attack the person."

01/11/2010: Anonymous from Springfield, Ohiyamaude replies: "It seems that the Wikipedia page for Dicalcium Phosphate no longer has any information reguarding it's reported side effects. Perhaps someone doesn't want us to know of it's potential danger? It always, and I mean always causes problems for me. No more vitamins in pill form for me thank you very much.

I would love to see someone put some credible, cited information about it's safety for human consumption on Wikipedia..and see how long it lasts up there. In fact, I urge all of you to contribute. Let's take back our right to free, open information!"

EC: Wow! Thank you for letting us know. Glad we have the old text from Wikipedia on our boils section... We should also be able to find it in internet archives like the Way Back Machine (if Wikipedia is indeed indexed) as proof that it was once there.

CURCUMIN BIOAVAILABILITY

Curcumin Preparation and Bioavailability

Curcumin is getting lots of scientific interest these days. Every month additional scientific studies are published on the effects of curcumin on different biochemical pathways.

Just keep one thing in mind. The curcumin used in these laboratory studies was dissolved in alcohol or DMSO. In short, the curcumin was made soluble in certain solvents that do not translate well for introduction into the human body.

The following two papers studied the effects of 3.6 grams of oral curcumin, in capsules, on humans. The first study is quite clear that curcumin simply does not enter the body in sufficient quantities to be medically effective.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/queryd.fcgi?cmd
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/queryd.fcgi?

In this study, oral doses of 3.6 grams of curcumin a day showed blood levels of 10nM. This is a VERY low concentration of curcumin. Yet, it was apparently enough to reduce prostaglandin E2 synthesis in colon cancer patients.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/

In order for curcumin to be maximally effective against cancer, it MUST be introduced into the body in a bioavailable form. Curcumin is almost totally insoluble in water. On the other hand, it is completely soluble in fat.

Curcumin dissolves readily in coconut milk or cream, especially if they are warm. There is NO reason to boil coconut milk or cream in order to dissolve curcumin. Never boil anything unless you are absolutely certain the heat will not damage the medicinal properties of the natural medicine. I have no idea how heat stable curcumin is for medicinal purposes. So don't boil it.

Curcumin that is dissolved in fat will be introduced into the lymphatic system with the fat. There is exactly where we want curcumin to be introduced into the body. The lymphatic fluid bathes all the tissues in the body. We are NOT interested in directly introducing it into the blood.

People complain about the taste of curcumin. So add other spices, such as turmeric, or other spices to the mix to change the taste.

How much curcumin do we need to treat cancer and leukemia? No one knows but I would recommend at least 10 grams a day, 5 grams twice a day dissolved in fat. Since curcumin is not toxic, why screw around with low doses?

You must use glutamine, at least 20 grams a day, with the curcumin to make it maximally effective. I blogged on this issue yesterday.

Stay tuned..."

Curcumin Bulk Source The following is our preferred supplier of bulk natural medicines. We have purchased from them before and their service and prices are excellent. Our main HIV mouse, Mouse Peter, is taking 12 grams of curcumin a day in coconut milk without any side effects at all. The curcumin is from this company. The Famous Mouse Blanche turned us on to this company. The company is Supplement Health Formulations in Mayer Arizona. They ship internationally.

Scroll down to Turmeric Extract, 95% curcumin. 500 grams. The cost is $65 for 500 grams bulk, a great price. Curcumin comes in red to orange colors. This is NOT a issue of purity. The amount of moisture in the product determines the color. No big deal. Supplement Health Formulations will be added to our list of preferred suppliers on the home page. Stay tuned...

Curry Spice May Help Tackle Cancer
Tues Apr 9, 2002, 5:34 PM ET

By Jacqueline Stenson

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The substance that gives the spice turmeric its yellow color may help fight cancer, preliminary evidence suggests.

Researchers have found in the lab that the active ingredient in turmeric, called curcumin, can enhance the cancer-fighting power of treatment with TRAIL, a naturally occurring molecule that helps kill cancer cells. TRAIL stands for tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand.

In an experiment with human prostate cancer cells in a laboratory dish, the combination treatment killed off two to three times more cells than either treatment alone, according to a study released Tuesday at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in San Francisco, California.

"Using these two agents--curcumin and TRAIL--we killed up to 80% of cells in culture," said study author Subhash Gautam, a researcher at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan. "That's pretty remarkable."

The next step is to see if the results with this experimental treatment combination can be reproduced in lab animals, he said.

Turmeric is a common ingredient in Indian food, Gautam noted. Indian folklore suggests it helps reduce inflammation, he said, and there is some laboratory evidence that it has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Other studies in the laboratory and in animals suggest the spice can help wounds heal and could also be protective against Alzheimer's.

While turmeric consumption has not been proven to lower cancer risk, Gautam pointed out that the spice contains plant phytochemicals that are associated with many health benefits, including cancer prevention. --- Copyright %uFFFD 2002 Reuters Limited.

MissK from JC, NJ replies: "Can you tell me when I can buy tumeric pills online? I was using the GNC brand but since I read your feedback that it contains other ingredients, I am looking to get it elsewhere. I tried the two above sites and one is not working and the other I could not find. BTW--Love this site! Very informative. Thanks so much for your help. "

EC: Try your local health food store or Whole Foods. Otherwise, iherb.com.

02/05/2009: Suzanne from Rotterdam, Netherlands replies: "In India alzheimer is almost non existent and cancer is more rare, especially male types of cancer. Researchers found that it has to do with the consumption of large quantities of turmeric (also known as kunjit) in the curry. Especially the combination of chilly powder, turmeric and cauliflower and broccoli seems to do the trick. If you prepare a curry don't just use the herbal mix form the grocery but add your own paste of vegetable oil (arachide, sunflower or sesame oil), chilli powder and turmeric powder. Wash and cut the cauliflower and broccoli and let them sit for 15 minutes before cooking, as this improves the health benefits."

TURMERIC TEA FOR JOINT PAIN

RECIPE FOR RELIEVING JOINT PAIN
Gurudev Khar Khalsa, a Sat Nam Rasayan healer and Kundalini Yoga teacher in Los Angeles sent us this Ayurvedic tea for lubricating the joints. Gurudev tells us that the almond oil is a very important part of this recipe. Turmeric is called "the internal healer" in Ayurveda. Turmeric is also a blood purifier and is best known for its ability to help the female reproductive organs. Some research indicates that turmeric may be of value in preventing diabetes and cancer.

Recipe:
1/8 teaspoon turmeric, 3 cardamom pods (optional), 1/4 cup water. Simmer 5 to 7 minutes, then add : 1 cup of milk, 2 tablespoons almond oil (cold pressed). Bring just to the boiling point (but do not boil). Add honey or maple syrup to taste. Sip slowly as a hot tea.

GIVING TURMERIC TO CHILDREN

1 YEA

[YEA]  06/27/2010: Kristi from Santa Rosa, Ca writes: "Re: Giving turmeric to babies or children

Turmeric has completely helped my husband and I deal with boils - after 2 or 3 each we have had no more. We mixed turmeric with warm water and milk to drink, and also applied paste of turmeric and honey.

But when my daughter developed extremely large painful ones, we weren't initially able to get any turmeric inside her. So we tried a few tricks that we don't normally turn to, and she's done better with them. Antibiotics did NOT work -- they cleared the infection while she was taking them, then the boils returned again.

External applications of turmeric are also fine for children, and draw out pus very quickly. We use a mixture of turmeric and honey, with a few drops of tea tree and lavender essential oil -- mix well. Note that tea-tree is safe for mucous membranes/genital area; lavender is not recommended on those areas for young kids unless very well diluted.

Here are some suggestions for parents who want to try giving turmeric orally to kids; I hope they can help someone!

1) Curcumin in capsules has a less offensive taste than straight turmeric -- we sometimes use that in our dosing by breaking open the capsules and using half the powder each time.

2) Put some turmeric/curcumin on a spoon with manuka honey (itself great against infections)- follow with milk or another bit of honey.

3) If all else fails, icecream is a good cover-up because it's cold and sweet, although of course the sugar isn't so great

Best to try when your child is hungry! Always start with a sip of water and a spoonful of the sweet stuff to lubricate the mouth and to make the experience appealing! Then turmeric, then honey/icecream again.

Good luck everyone."

06/28/2010: Merryanne from Orange City, Florida, Usa replies: "I am glad that the turmeric is doing good for you,,you can mix it with any oil or butter and it spreds or mixes great. Now, I was wondering why your family is having boils??? I have had some people in mine also, and we have had pets over the years that also have had Very big ones, and pets that had to be put down because of large swollen areas,,,over the last 2 years I have done a lot of study/reading on nutrtion/health. I have come to the conclusion that most of our and our pets health problems is the amount of soy and a few other foods that are blocking the absorption into our system of iodine and a lot of other minerials. After a few years of this the body cant fuction or fight tumors or anything. Soy is in everything, even tuna fish,,peanut butter, canned red beans. It is causing some pets and people to die, I am serious. Merryanne"

TAINTED SUPPLEMENTS WARNING

1 WARNING!

[WARNING!]  03/23/2009: Dianna from Austin, Tx writes: "Check out this link. there are tainted turmeric supplements killing people in scandanavia. http://www.nutraingredients.com/Regulation/Tainted-turmeric-supplements-linked-to-Scandinavian-deaths/"

EC: Thanks so much, Dianna! Another good reason why we prefer the powder you find at an Indian grocery store for $3.00!

Here's the article:

Tainted turmeric supplements linked to Scandinavian deaths
By Shane Starling, 23-Mar-2009
http://www.nutraingredients.com/Regulation/Tainted-turmeric-supplements-linked-to-Scandinavian-deaths/

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned the UK public to avoid a brand of turmeric food supplements containing a drug called nimesulide after it was linked to two deaths and several liver damage cases in Scandinavia.

The product in question, branded as Fortodol or Leppin Miradin, drew the attention of medical agencies after 11 liver-related adverse event reports in Sweden and a further five in Norway, including the deaths.

Nimesulide is not authorised as a medicine in the UK.

In response, the FSA said in a statement on Friday: "There have been no reports of liver failure or illness linked with these products in the UK. As a precautionary measure, however, these products have been voluntarily withdrawn from sale by the two main importers and recall notices will be placed in the shops selling these supplements."

Fortodol and Miradin are usually sold in the UK via the internet as food supplements, often accompanied by unsubstantiated claims to relieve arthritis, muscle pains and headaches.

The products are made by a Californian company called Donsbach, which typically exports the products to Sweden before they are shipped throughout Europe. [Bold our emphasis]

One of the Swedish cases involved a fatal liver failure which is under investigation by the Swedish Medical Products Agency. The Norwegian Medical Products Agency is conducting investigations of its own.

The FSA warning has been backed by the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which, as its name suggests, governs medicines in the UK.

Nimesulide is an anti-inflammatory drug known to cause liver problems.

"Consumption of products that may contain undeclared and uncontrolled amounts of nimesulide represents a significant risk," the MHRA said.

A similar scare in Hungary was given the all-clear by the regulator there after investigations revealed a lack of nimesulide at hazardous levels.

03/23/2009: Dianna from Austin, tT replies: "yep! i've never bought turmeric in capsules because usually there are other things in them!

03/30/2010: Karen from Lawrenceburg, Ky replies: "About the post of Turmeric being tainted, I wanted to know, I buy mine from a seller on EBAY, so could this information possibly apply to his product? I buy turmeric powder. I have noticed since I've been having it, I've had stomache aches pretty bad, and I literraly never got them before. I hope I'm not getting a bad product, if anyone has any help, let me know. I don't think asking the seller about it will help, since he'll probably deny it. ~Karen"

ALLERGIES

7 YEA

[YEA]  09/01/2009: Rebekah from Athens, Ga writes: "WOW. For about 3 weeks now I have been taking 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric every day. My allergies are GONE. It worked in a matter of days. It works so well that I can hardly remember how bad my allergies used to be. I know that I was miserable and I was trying all kinds of over-the-counter crap from the pharmacy that wasn't working or made me feel worse. But turmeric... ahhhhh what relief!!! I used to have to sleep with a roll of toilet paper next to my head because I would wake up and blow my nose 6 or 7 times in the night. None of that now!!! No symptoms at ALL now unless I forget to drink my turmeric tea for 2 days.

This is how I take it: dissolve 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder in hot water (I get the powder from the spice section in my natural food store). I add a tiny amount of coconut oil because I read that turmeric works better if you take it with a little fat. Then I add a spoonful of blackstrap molasses because I like the taste. Keep stirring as you drink it so that the spice doesn;t settle at the bottom. I drink this any time during the day, just once a day. I had allergy problems my whole life- allergic to everything. Now I never even sneeze!!!!! I am so thankful. Hope this helps someone else.
:-)

[YEA]  09/08/2008: Carolyn from Northwest, Ohio writes: "I vote "yea" for Turmeric as a cure for allergies:

I suffered from hayfever type allergies seemingly constantly since we moved to our new house in Jan of '07. During that summer, my symptoms were so severe I couldn't be outside for 5 minutes without having a severe hayfever attack. I took OTC meds daily but they were getting harder to buy as they all got moved behind the pharmacy counter, plus they took hours to start working.

I sought out earth clinic and wrote down my top 5 cures for allergies, thinking I would start trying them in the spring of '08. But in the Winter of '07 I rescued a rabbit that needed to eat hay twice a day. Of course I was allergic! I decided to try Turmeric as it was the cheapest remedy. I started taking 2 capsules a day (720 mg caps) in February '08. Within 5 days I noticed a great improvement. After a few months with this regime, I started noticing my allergies getting less severe and less frequent. After 4 months, my husband told me, "You don't have allergies anymore!"

Now, 7 full months later (and past pollen season), I am down to 1 capsule per day as maintenance, and take an extra one if I have congestion. I am so thankful for this simple cure! The world is open to me again: I can go outside without bringing a snot rag. I can brush my cats daily with no symptoms. I can clean the cat litter without having a reaction to the dust. I can feed my rabbit and not suffer. I was able to bring my feather bed back out of storage and use it with confidence cause I'm not allergic to it anymore! I do still have problems with mold when it rains, but just clogged sinuses not the severe reaction I used to get. An extra turmeric capsule and I'm fine. Gotta love it!"

I wanted to share, as well, that I have very bad seasonal allergies requiring daily anti-histamine treatment, plus eye drops and nasal spray. As a side effect of taking the turmeric capsules (I must assume as nothing else has changed), I do not have allergies today. It is very hot and dry and I was in the garden for hours today... it is the height of allergy season. I realized I had not taken anti-histamines for two days but have no allergies. I really didn't expect that!!!!"

[YEA]  01/11/2007: Lorelei from Utah writes: "I'm so glad I read about turmeric for allergies. It seems too simple, but after trying and failing with ACV and honey, the turmeric worked miracles! Every time I stop taking it, the allergies come back. I'm allergic to our 2 dogs and cat, dust, and practically every plant out there. I was popping pills and snorting drugs daily, so the fact that this works is amazing. Two months pill free -- we'll see when spring hits! At first I was putting it in my drinks and whatever food I could, but now I fill gel capsules with turmeric, and take 2 to 5 a day (up to a tsp worth), depending on how sneezy I am. If I do it regularly, I can get away with only 1 or 2 capsules a day. You can also buy capsules, but they seemed pretty expensive (as long as you don't mind staining your fingers yellow to make your own). Sometimes I take a little extra Vit C too, depending on how I am feeling, but it doesn't seem to matter too much for me. As a side note, if your eyes get itchy, put a wet chamomile tea bag on them. That seems to help too."

I read on the internet, maybe here, that turmeric is anti allergenic and anti-inflamatory. I took a teaspoonful every day in a glass of water. After three days I could breath perfectly. One of the other unexpected benefits is that my sinuses cleared up. I used to wake up sneezing and would continue throughout the morning, sometimes through the entire day, year round. After experimenting with different dosages, I am now on a maintenance level of 2000 mg of Vitamin C daily and this keeps my allergies under control usually 50-51 weeks out of the year. Occasionally, I may have a flare-up and need something else. When that happens, I stir 1 teaspoon of ground Turmeric into an 8 oz. glass of water and drink it. Within 15 minutes, I am breathing freely once again and no more sneezing!"

I have been using it for about a year now in a mixture with ginger,1/2 & 1/2. I add a little cinnamon, red pepper and cardamon. I just sprinkle it into my coffee, tea and food, to taste, everyday. It doesn't taste bad this way and you do get used to it. By adding it this way it just becomes a part of your diet not something extra you have to do.

I use it for it's anti-inflammatory properties after having a major attack of arthritis. The old damage hasn't gone away but doesn't hurt as much as it did and I would say that I have experienced major improvement in the duration, frequency and intensity of the flare-ups.

04/14/2009: Kelly from San Francisco, CA replies: "I study Ayurvedic Medicine and find it very interesting that there are comments about people noticing that they are sweating alot... This makes total sense as inflammatory responses are liver related and a pitta or fire symptom/response in the body. The tumeric must be reducing the inflammation but the fire has to move somewhere, and so the skin is taking over (probably to help relieve the liver's load as the skin and liver work together and are both channels for the body to detoxify). The fire is moving out the skin in the form of sweat! So I would say, yes it would seem normal to me in a body with excess heat."

I started taking turmeric for arthritis and got my mother who is 69 taking turmeric pills as well, 600 mg per day in one pill. If I run out of pills for longer than 4-5 days my knuckles start hurting and it's hard to bend my index finger. I make sure I don't run out any longer.

My mom has been faithful about taking the turmeric pills and just recently mentioned how she thinks it is helping with her Crohn's disease. She had emergency surgery in 1992 for an obstruction and they removed a large portion of small intestines and colon. It was due to Crohn's disease but they didn't diagnose it until after the surgery.

Since the surgery in 1992, my mom has narrowed down what foods bother her to eat. She cannot digest any kind of fat. Red meats, fried foods, nothing with fat digests and if she eats anything with fat she gets bad diarrhea sometimes all night long.

Since she has been taking the turmeric she has noticed that when she cheats and eats pizza or french fries (knowing full well what she will endure later after eating those fatty foods) she has found that she isn't bothered by the fat now and doesn't get the bad diarrhea.

She does take 2 different over the counter digestive enzyme pills with fattening meals to help digest the fat but she has always taken those pills. But now with taking the turmeric pills she can eat more of what she wants to eat without any of the consequences which is a blessing since she is so thin.

Hope this helps someone else. Reading this site has helped me and my family out tremendously. I encourage everyone to give feedback. You never know when it might help someone."

BLEEDING GUMS

1 YEA

[YEA]  11/19/2009: Sow_b from Sydney, Nsw writes: "Hello!

Firstly, your site is amazing!!! Thanks.

I cured my bleeding gum problem of many years by using turmeric powder as a toothpaste. I would first brush my teeth normally with toothpaste and then wash out and then my next round of brushing I use tumeric powder and apply it to the brush and start brushing away. The turmeric kills of any bacteria that lives in the gums which cause the bleeding and its great for your mouth as a whole. Whenever I used to ask my dentist how to cure my bleeding gums he would just tell me to come into his surgery for a scale and clean for the teeth which costs almost $200 australian dollars. I ignored it and it struck me that turmeric is a great anti-bacterial so that should fix my problem. I now brush this daily and my gums have never bled since, and it costs just a few dollars. Be warned, turmeric stains yellow and although this HARDLY ever affects the color of your teeth but if you want to be super sure then finish the last round of brushing using pure baking soda, this will remove any small turmeric leftover, keep your mouth in an alkeline state and super brighten your teeth!

Best of luck! Email me (sowrabh@digital-soul.com.au) any questions"

BOILS

5 YEA

[YEA]  01/24/2009: Cindy from Astoria, Oregon writes: "In desperation I tried turmeric for a very large and painful abcess I had on my inner thigh. I've had problems with a boil there before and took 1 teaspoon of turmeric in water or milk 3 times a day. Day one the pain started to subside greatly... By day two it was shrinking and by day three it was about 75% smaller!! I'm amazed and relived BUT what I found to be extraordinary is that I noticed I have used my rescue inhaler for asthma only once in the time I started taking the turmeric. I am on an oral medication for asthma but still must use my rescue inhaler several times a day. The relief in my asthma is truly a mircle treatment for me. I plan to use turmeric daily for asthma and will play around with the dosage to see what will keep it at bay for me. thank you Earth Clinic!!"

[YEA]  02/01/2008: Ang from Auckland, New Zealand writes: "Thank you for your wonderful website! I tried your tumeric cure on my 8 1/2 year old son, who just recently had school sores (impetigo), and then started to develop a boil (which is exactly what happened last time he had school sores at age 5 - he then went on to have boils for about 4 months). I gave him a tsp of tumeric in a chocolate milkshake 3 x per day for two days and the boil totally dried up and didn't get big or painful...and, no more boils have developed after 1 week! Awesome!!"

[YEA]  01/23/2008: Shery from Paris, France writes: "I always believed in magic and you proved it today. I have had a big ugly and terribly painful boil on my stomach for a few days. I know this must be because of hair follicle infection as well as fat (yeah yeah, stomach with loads of fat, and hair on it too. hmmm not nice but real). It has been very painful and I am on mission in Nepal of all places. So I googled "boils" this morning to make sure they were not cancerous, and I fall on your website and the turmeric suggestion. Since I do happen to be in Nepal where everyone believes in ayurvedic medicine, I went to the hotel kitchen and asked for turmeric, and drank a full glass of water with a tablespoon of it. Yuck but the waiters were telling me that they drink this with milk to cure their sore throats. I went back to my room and forgot it although I smelled quite bad. 4 hours later, padam, the front of my pants got totally wet with blood and pus. The boil burst open and I burst out laughing. Your remedy WORKS; I thank you so much and will keep this website bookmarked for life."
