Spicy Tomato Tea: The #1 Remedy To Cure Severe Sinus Congestion

7/16/2007: Jean Woolhiser (JeannieW[@]gmail.com) from Franklin, WI writes: "PLEASE, PLEASE. REPLACE ALL THE OLD TEXT about the tomato tea with the following text as its much more concise and has been refined. Thank you! :)

I first sent in this recipe in 2002, I think. I've been studying people's comments on it and have revised it accordingly. Email me at JeannieW[@]gmail.com if you have questions. Thank you to everyone who has posted their comments. It really makes my day (and makes me cry! :) when I read how this recipe is helping others!

It works fast (in most cases) and tastes great! These ingredients are well-known serious herbals for their medicinal properties... Used together they do wonders for sinus/ear infections, colds, coughing and sore throat. We've even found it to kill flu germs and strep throat (with no antibiotics).

TOMATO TEA RECIPE
2 cups V8 Juice
2-3 cloves Garlic crushed (use more if you can)
2 T Lemon Juice
Hot Sauce (the more the better, so as much as you can handle)

Mix and heat in a pan or in the microwave. Sip slowly and re-warm as needed to get the full effects of the fumes. Let it sit in the back of your throat to bathe it. Suck the fumes through your sinuses and also down into your lungs. Its all natural and healthy, so drink as much of it as you want or need until you are SURE the infection is gone. This is past the time when you "feel better."

This appears to be the best recipe, but from the comments, people often don't have the right ingredients. Don't let that hold you back. Use whatever you have available. Below are some substitutes that may not work as well or as fast, but will still help. I've listed them by their likely effectiveness:

Substitutes:
V8 Juice - tomato juice, vegetable juice, canned or fresh tomatoes crushed, tomato soup (if really desperate, try another kind of fruit juice, vegetable soup or even chicken soup . you're aiming for high Vit C content)
Garlic - garlic in olive oil, dehydrated garlic, garlic salt (aiming for the strong anti-bacterial/fungal effects)
Lemon Juice - Fresh lemons, bottled juice, limes, lime juice, oranges, frozen lemonade
Hot Sauce - ANY kind of hot sauce works, fresh hot peppers, cayenne pepper, dried pepper flakes (if really desperate, try horseradish, black pepper or even mustard . you're aiming for the highly anti-bacterial/fungal properties of capricin which is found in hot peppers, and its effectiveness at clearing out the sinuses.)

Notes:
1. Capricin (found in hot peppers) is actually soothing to the stomach. In addition, it's a pain killer (good for sore throats), and is also one of the main ingredients used in herbal recipes for killing fungal infections like Candida, which is closely related to all kinds of physical problems we have, including allergies.

Excellent candida test: http://www.mall-net.com/cgibin/quiz4.cgi?quiz=crook.qa.

Interesting fungus killing pages: http://www.mall-net.com/mcs/afung.html http://www.mall-net.com/mcs/#Treat.

2. You can add Worcestershire sauce and celery salt to make it taste just like a bloody mary mix.

3. Drink it just because it tastes good, and you probably won't get an infection in the first place. :)"

UPDATE:
07/19/2008: JeanW (JeannieW@gmail.com) from Franklin, WI writes: "I've seen a number of nays on the tomato tea remedy where people say it helps for a while and then they get congested again. As one person mentioned, and its a very good point, you may have nasal polyps and the only thing that will help that is to have them removed.

However, I believe there are some other possibilities here. The nasal passages are fairly large. If you're becoming re-congested, it may be that its mucous moving down from another area of the nasal passages. Give it time, they will clear out.

Also, when your body is trying to get rid of an infection, it works extra hard at it. Its possible your body is creating more mucous to isolate the offending germs and push them out.

Some people think that one or a couple drinks will do the trick, and in many cases, that's been true as you can see from the testimonials. Others its taken a few hours or even days.

But think about it... the germs are running around all over your body, your immunity is down or you wouldn't have the infection in the first place. It may take some time... everyone is different. This remedy will build up your immune system, and in most cases, deals with the symptoms in a very short time. There is no limit to the amount you can have in a day... this isn't a pharmaceutical drug. These are natural ingredients... drink as much as you want as often as you want!"

ADDITIONAL RECIPE
6/21/2007: Wendi from FtWayne, Indiana writes: "I came across an article on Tomato Tea (particularly for sinus infection). It really does work ! We have been using a similiar recipe for 20 years . The recipe we have always used is as follows:

Simmer
1 can/jug of V8
2 cloves of GARLIC
2 LEMONS juiced
2 tbsp HONEY
pinch of CAYENNE

Tips :
* African Cayenne if you can find it
* Fresh Lemons
* Put the clove of garlic under a wide knife and smash it-this seems to release the properties better than chopping
* V8 or Tomato juice- we always used V8 because it has more flavor
* Keep the concoction simmering on low and drink through out the day
* Alter amounts of ingredients as you see fit.

I am exhausted from not sleeping. In my recipie I used V8 juice, lemon juice, garlic salt and a lot of hot sauce which I heated in a saucepan......It is sooooooooo hot; however I knew that the hotter the better.....I am slowly sipping it and inhaling the fumes too..already I can feel my sinuses drain although I think I used too much hot sauce b/c my mouth is also burning...Be ware if you do not like hot & spicy things this is not the cure for you...It worked for me....thanks "

[YEA]  10/24/2008: Karalyn from Lynwood, IL writes: "Well, I am drinking the tea now, surprisingly it is quite tasty. Prior to this drink, one could not pay me enough to drink tomato juice or try hot sauce. After about ten minutes I can feel my sinus passages in my cheecks warming up and I can breath out of both nostrills. I havent done that in years. Hopefully it will continue to work so I can go back to work. My sinus pressure was miserable up until now. I will write more later on further results.

I used a cup of tomato juice
2tsp hot sauce
1 clove fresh garlic
1 tsp lemon juice"

[YEA]  10/19/2008: Ed from Chattanooga, TN, USA writes: "Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Dr. was sending me to the E.R. because the pain was so severe. But I tried your tea first and it worked great. Actually tasted good too. Surprized me. Thanks again. Oh yeah, my sinuses were completely stopped up and had been for 4 days. We followed the recipe as closely as possible, the hot sauce was by taste."

[YEA]  10/18/2008: Cindy from Richmond, Virginia, USA writes: "Suffering from frequent and severe sinus problems, I tried the tomato tea this morning out of sheer desparation. It WORKED! I've been drinking it all morning, sinuses slightly better with each cup. I didn't have V8 or tomato juice, used fire roasted tomatoes and fresh. Yummy, too! Thank you so much!"

[YEA]  10/15/2008: BB (lunaratlas@yahoo.com) from Louisville, KY writes: "For relief in about 10 minutes I would recommend this tea/soup to anyone suffering from sinus congestion or a sinus infection. I used 2 cups of V8, a few squeezes from a real lemon, 4 cloves of garlic (used a press which basically makes it half minced and half juice), and a various mixture of cayenne pepper, green (jalapeno) Tabasco sauce, and Blair's Death Sauce (mostly habanero peppers). I drank some at night and fell asleep able to breathe through both nostrils and woke up with no congestion. Had some more tea/soup at lunch today and although my condition hasn't worsened I'm having a bit more before bed. The inflammation is still present but it's only been 24 hours so I'll be patient and see if it continues to work or clear the infection without antibiotics. The only regiment I'm doing in addition to this is saline irrigation (Neti Pot) every few hours. The combination is keeping me from wanting to remove my head from my body. So far I'm pleased and will report back if it in fact "cures" my sinus infection!"

[SIDE EFFECTS]  09/14/2008: Lara from College Station, TX writes: "I would NOT recommend trying the spicy tomato tea if you are pregnant. I am 6 months pregnant and I thought I would try this when I got a bad case of congestion. I ended up getting even worse heartburn that kept me miserable and awake for half the night!! This drink has everything they tell you to avoid for heartburn (citric acid from tomato and lemon juice plus the hot sauce), but I didn't give it much thought because I haven't had much of an issue with heartburn like some people do during pregnancy (I only had it mildly one other time)."

10/08/2008: Suzanne from Somerset, NJ replies: "To thwart off heartburn whether pregnant or not, add a bit of sugar to cut down the acidity. I just made some tomato tea and added about a 1/2 to 1 tsp to about 16oz. No heartburn and usually I get it BAD. Also, keep some papaya enzyme on hand for heartburn."

[WORKED TEMPORARILY]  08/17/2008: Jen from Portsmouth, New Hampshire writes: "I have been taking ACV for my seasonal allergies for a couple of weeks and it has worked wonders. Unfortunately, today I had to clean out our rental property that was filthy with cigarette smoke, dust, pet hair ect... A few hours after I finished, my allergies started acting up and the ACV didn't quite cut it. I can't breath from my nose, and my sinus' are very congested. I tried irrigating, but it didn't really work. I just tried the tomato tea without the lemon because I don't have any in the house and the stores are closed. It really helped while I was drinking it, but as soon as I finished it the congestion came back. I am going to drink some more before I try to go back to sleep. I can't wait to try it with the lemon. I'm going to drink it all day tomorrow. By the way I love the taste! I use raw garlic and cayenne all of the time to fight infections. I've grown accustom to the taste. Thank God for such inexpensive natural remedies!"

[YEA]  08/14/2008: Shani from Atlanta, GA writes: "Thank you so much for this suggestion. After days of popping extra strength Tylenol to alleviate the pain from nasal congestion I goggle searched a home remedy solution and found the recipe for tomato tea. All I had was some organic tomato soup which has seasonings including garlic in it but it absolutely helped! I drank two cups heated in the microwave and a day later I feel so much better and can concentrate at work and I'm not in pain. Thank you, thank you, thanks you!!!"

[YEA]  08/10/2008: Feroze from Mumbai, India writes: "i have sinusitus since i was very little. severe tooth ache, ear ache, and jaw pain, to the extent that i can not open my mouth.
have tried all sorts of remedies from accupressure to magnet therapy to steroids. initially, the only thing that worked were medicated nose drops, but soon they stopped working (i guess my body got used to it) and in some cases they do cause more congestion.

one cup of tomato tea seems to have caused immediate relief. reheated in micro twice. used one chopped up red chilli and three cloves of garlic and used canned tomato juice. otherwise followed recipe exactly. one thing i thought of was instead of using crushed garlic, chopped garlic might be better. this causes the user to chew up the garlic pieces in his/her mouth, effectively holding the juice in the mouth longer . thank you very much for this near magical concoction. i will write again if i find it to be a long term cure..."

I decided to try this recipe before filling the prescription and you know what? I think I will cure this with the tomato tea alone and not have to take any other meds. I was fully congested and could not breath thru my nose but after drinking the tea it cleared me right up. I am definitely on the mend. I used all fresh ingredients. Thank you!"

[YEA]  07/09/2008: Jason from LA, CA writes: "I've had a sinus headache for months and have been at wit's end. I wasn't even sure it was a sinus headache because I felt it in my forehead more than my nose. I didn't expect anything from Jeannie's Spicy Tomato Tea recipe, but I followed her instructions regarding ingredients, measurements and sipping (slowly, holding it in, inhaling while the tea is in the back of the throat) and the next day I noticed less sinus pressure. I couldn't believe the instant relief. Over the last few days I've drank the tea in the morning, night or both and it's had amazing results. I have only a tiny bit of pressure left. When drinking the tea, my nose only runs slightly, if at all, and my eyes sometimes water a tiny bit, so I don't know where the sinus congestion is going, but I know it's leaving my head and upper nose. My head feels almost totally clear again. I cannot thank Jeannie enough for the relief from tremendous and previously uncurable pain. This recipe has worked wonders for me, and I'm a major skeptic. Note: I read that many sinus headaches are caused by repressed grief or anger. I know this is true in my case, so I'd advise others to consider that as well. Regardless, the tea heals."

[YEA]  07/03/2008: Kristy O. from Kennesaw, GA writes: "For over a month now I have had a terrible cough and I am constantly clearing my throat (3 -5 times every minute), which is extremely embarrassing and annoying, especially to others around me. On a recent plane flight, I chose as my beverage a can of Bloody Mary mix instead of a soda. Within minutes my coughing stopped and I did not need to clear my throat for nearly an hour. I couldn't believe it. When I got home I searched the web and thankfully found your site. I cannot wait to try your recipe and I expect it will have the same results that I experienced with the store-bought Bloody Mary mix. Thank you!"

I haven't been able to sleep well, but tonight was the worst.  I've been up all night coughing, sneezing, and in pain.  I found this recipe with some reservation, as I've taken just about everything you can buy over the counter, but half an hour later I am here to tell you I'm not coughing.  I'm not saying I'm "better", but I will be able to go to sleep now.  My sinuses quit draining and my chest doesn't even hurt as much.  Thanks for the info."

[NAY]  04/18/2008: Renata from St. James, Trinidad writes: "I was suffering very badly all of yesterday with my sinuses, even my teeth hurt. I found the recipe online. I used all the original ingredients, V8, fresh lemon juice, 4 cloves of garlic, and 3 different types of pepper sauces (of course being in the caribbean I have many at home, so I used my hottest). I even added Whorchestershire sauce and a celery stick to make in like a bloody Mary. I had my first cup last night. It didn't seen to do anything. I kept an open mind and had a second cup this morning, but still it had no effect. I used lots of hot sauce, almost to the point of not being able to drink it, but nothing. The taste is nice, the drinking is fulling. I'm sure its very healthy. I think I'd be better off using it as a meal replacement to help me lose some unwanted pounds, though than for sinus relief."

[NAY]  03/20/2008: Karen from Evanston, IL writes: "I followed the tomato tea recipe ver batim. It most definitely helps, but it's not the cure that everyone makes it out to be. (Hence, my "nay" vote.)

Note: (1) The real benefit comes from the hot sauce/pepper. If you can't stand really spicy things, you're not going to be able to handle this drink at the level of beneficial spiciness.

(2) It only helps for a few minutes. I felt great after taking my first dose, but all the benefits were gone 20 minutes later."

[YEA]  03/13/2008: Traci from Huntsville, AL writes: "The Potion Really Works. I was tired of the medicines and doctors same ol' prescription. Nothing was working for sinus congestion. Most the medicine from the doctor made me feel worse! I searched on the internet for severe sinus problems and found this concoction. This was the only thing I have ever tired that worked in 30 minutues time. It taste GREAT! I would suggest this recipe to anyone and I send the recipe to everyone I know and all I get is great results. Adding cayenne pepper instead of hot sauce works best! It's the capisum in cayenne that clears sinus and the garlic that is the antibiotic healing property. It all works wonders!! Breathe Right AGAIN! AMEN!! TRY YOU'LL BE BACK FOR YOUR BLOG!"

I tried taking some medication to help out but it just made me drowsy and I felt like I couldnt function at work. First thing I did when I had a break was run across the street to the convenience store and pick up a jug of V8 tomato juice. I threw it in a pot with 3 cloves of garlic that I minced up, half of a lime, some cracked pepper and a blend of Tabasco and Saracha hot sauce. Warmed it up just until it was about to boil and drank it like coffee...it was awesome and my nose is running freely now and I can finally taste. A+++++++++"

[YEA]  02/19/2008: Beth from Baltimore, MD writes: "I can vouch for the V8 juice. Except, I use low sodium V8 and then mix some Old Bay seafood seasoning in it. I am trying anything at this point. It must be the vitamins in the V8 & the spices of the seasoning that clear my sinuses. Tastes great, too! - 1 can low sodium V8 - Enough Old Bay so that you can taste the spice."

[YEA]  01/03/2008: Tasneem (tasneem /@/karmic.co.in) from Manipal, India writes: "Hi, Hot tomato tea cured the heaviness in my head due to an old chronic sinus blockage. I had completely lost my sense of smell and was even constipated. Sipping hot water with dill seed infusion, melted away the sense of cold in a flash, and I could feel my ears opening up and a fine sweat covered my forehead, and I immediately felt better. I have been searching for cures for the same. Hot Cure is definitely right, bec. I experienced it few times in last 2 - 3 months. I had not even known about this cure then. It had just become too chronic. The problem is when its too fiery hot, I can't sleep as there seems to be a grating sensation in the abdomen. So try looking at it holistically as a preventive. I find cookies and chips the worst culprits. All the luck! http://www.ayurvediccure.com/home-remedies/homeremedies-sinusitis.htm"

[YEA]  12/28/2007: Reece from Melbourne, Australia writes: "I wanted to just say firstly that your website and the fantastic 'not for profit' nature of it has helped me immensely with a sinus infection which I have been battling for 1.5 months now. I had been getting pressure inside the top of my head and was finally diagnosed as having sinus problems which I had had 3 courses of antibiotics over a 1.5 month period each course getting better for only a matter of days before my sinuses started to become congested again.

I tried the tomato tea cure without skeptism because I am now someone who knows how hard sinus problems are to cure. After having 2 tea drinks (5pm and then before bed) I woke up the next day with completely mucus free sinuses and breathing. Over the course of the last 4 days my mucus has come back each day between 11am up until 5pm when I take my tea, however each day the amount of congestion is less than the day before. I truly believe (and thus far it is true) that in another 3 or 4 days time I will have completely recovered from what has been one of the worst medical complaints I have suffered from. I am 28 years old and would like to say thank you so much for creating an open to the public website with such valuable material and not expecting a penny in return for good health :-) P.S this recipe is invaluable."

10/24/2008: Catherine from Wellington, New Zealand replies: "With mucus recurring so regularly it might be worth looking at diet related cause, could be wheat or as is more usual milk products that cause mucus. Hope this helps."

I tried the recipe last night except I used close to 1 teaspoon of garlic powder. I don't like tomato soup or ketchup so I was only able to sip about 1/2 a cup of this. Apparently, this was enough to start working because I've awaken with no cough(the night before I kept myself awake coughing)sinuses are barely noticeable and I have my voice back with just a little clearing of my throat and there is quite a bit of buildup in and around my eyes and the heaviness I felt in my head is gone.Too bad I didn't try this the first couple of days I felt bad versus waiting until I was out of ideas."

[YEA]  10/24/2007: Rose from Sacramento, CA writes: "After having recurring colds & sinus infections for over a year, I eventually got surgery in my nose. This is after taking Antihistamines, Naseril and everything else. I felt better, but still got sick easily, even after the surgery. Tired of medicine, I came across this remedy & ran to the store, bought the ingredients at the first sign of a cold and took it before trying any thing else. To my surprise, I was well after two day’s, without taking anything else. Since then, I take this remedy at the sign of a cold (itchy throat, runny nose) and that’s all!!! My husband, who was not sure it worked, tried it when he felt sick, he had a runny nose, cough and was sick in bed, but after one day he was fine. Now, we give it to our 5 year old daughter and well, we’re all happy. Sometimes it does upset my husband’s stomach a bit, probably do to the hot sauce, but it works."
