Tomato Tea Cures
Spicy Tomato Tea: The #1 Remedy To Cure Severe Sinus Congestion
7/16/2007: Jean Woolhiser (JeannieW[@]gmail.com) from Franklin, WI writes: "PLEASE, PLEASE. REPLACE ALL THE OLD TEXT about the tomato tea with the following text as its much more concise and has been refined. Thank you! :)
I first sent in this recipe in 2002, I think. I've been studying people's comments on it and have revised it accordingly. Email me at JeannieW[@]gmail.com if you have questions. Thank you to everyone who has posted their comments. It really makes my day (and makes me cry! :) when I read how this recipe is helping others!
It works fast (in most cases) and tastes great! These ingredients are well-known serious herbals for their medicinal properties... Used together they do wonders for sinus/ear infections, colds, coughing and sore throat. We've even found it to kill flu germs and strep throat (with no antibiotics).
TOMATO TEA RECIPE
2 cups V8 Juice
2-3 cloves Garlic crushed (use more if you can)
2 T Lemon Juice
Hot Sauce (the more the better, so as much as you can handle)
Mix and heat in a pan or in the microwave. Sip slowly and re-warm as needed to get the full effects of the fumes. Let it sit in the back of your throat to bathe it. Suck the fumes through your sinuses and also down into your lungs. Its all natural and healthy, so drink as much of it as you want or need until you are SURE the infection is gone. This is past the time when you "feel better."
This appears to be the best recipe, but from the comments, people often don't have the right ingredients. Don't let that hold you back. Use whatever you have available. Below are some substitutes that may not work as well or as fast, but will still help. I've listed them by their likely effectiveness:
Substitutes:
V8 Juice - tomato juice, vegetable juice, canned or fresh tomatoes crushed, tomato soup (if really desperate, try another kind of fruit juice, vegetable soup or even chicken soup. You're aiming for high Vit C content)
Garlic - garlic in olive oil, dehydrated garlic, garlic salt (aiming for the strong anti-bacterial/fungal effects)
Lemon Juice - Fresh lemons, bottled juice, limes, lime juice, oranges, frozen lemonade
Hot Sauce - ANY kind of hot sauce works, fresh hot peppers, cayenne pepper, dried pepper flakes (if really desperate, try horseradish, black pepper or even mustard. You're aiming for the highly anti-bacterial/fungal properties of capsaicin which is found in hot peppers, and its effectiveness at clearing out the sinuses.)
Notes:
1. Capsaicin (found in hot peppers) is actually soothing to the stomach. In addition, it's a pain killer (good for sore throats), and is also one of the main ingredients used in herbal recipes for killing fungal infections like Candida, which is closely related to all kinds of physical problems we have, including allergies.
Excellent candida test: http://www.mall-net.com/cgibin/quiz4.cgi?quiz=crook.qa.
Interesting fungus killing pages: http://www.mall-net.com/mcs/afung.html http://www.mall-net.com/mcs/#Treat.
2. You can add Worcestershire sauce and celery salt to make it taste just like a bloody mary mix.
3. Drink it just because it tastes good, and you probably won't get an infection in the first place. :)"
UPDATE:
07/19/2008: JeanW (JeannieW@gmail.com) from Franklin, WI writes: "I've seen a number of nays on the tomato tea remedy where people say it helps for a while and then they get congested again. As one person mentioned, and its a very good point, you may have nasal polyps and the only thing that will help that is to have them removed.
However, I believe there are some other possibilities here. The nasal passages are fairly large. If you're becoming re-congested, it may be that its mucous moving down from another area of the nasal passages. Give it time, they will clear out.
Also, when your body is trying to get rid of an infection, it works extra hard at it. Its possible your body is creating more mucous to isolate the offending germs and push them out.
Some people think that one or a couple drinks will do the trick, and in many cases, that's been true as you can see from the testimonials. Others its taken a few hours or even days.
But think about it... the germs are running around all over your body, your immunity is down or you wouldn't have the infection in the first place. It may take some time... everyone is different. This remedy will build up your immune system, and in most cases, deals with the symptoms in a very short time. There is no limit to the amount you can have in a day... this isn't a pharmaceutical drug. These are natural ingredients... drink as much as you want as often as you want!"
ADDITIONAL RECIPE
6/21/2007: Wendi from FtWayne, Indiana writes: "I came across an article on Tomato Tea (particularly for sinus infection). It really does work ! We have been using a similiar recipe for 20 years. The recipe we have always used is as follows:
Simmer
1 can/jug of V8
2 cloves of GARLIC
2 LEMONS juiced
2 tbsp HONEY
pinch of CAYENNE
Tips :
* African Cayenne if you can find it
* Fresh Lemons
* Put the clove of garlic under a wide knife and smash it-this seems to release the properties better than chopping
* V8 or Tomato juice- we always used V8 because it has more flavor
* Keep the concoction simmering on low and drink through out the day
* Alter amounts of ingredients as you see fit.

[YEA] 02/05/2012: Julie from Nashville, Tn, Usa writes: "Recently, I came down with a bad cold and very sore throat that I think was brought on by stress - I literally "worried myself sick". I woke up with it on a Wednesday before I was to start a new job the following Monday. This was bad news - I rarely get sick, but when I do get a cold, it's usually miserable and protracted. I turned to Jean's spicy tomato tea, drinking approximately a large coffee-mug-full two to three times a day. (One caveat: I like very spicy foods, and I use a lot more garlic and hot sauce than the recipe calls for! ) I started feeling better right away; my symptoms turned out to be not nearly as miserable as they usually are when I've had a cold; and best of all, by Monday morning I was about 98% recovered and feeling ready to tackle my first day of my new job. It cut my recovery time in half and really eased the symptoms. And this was a month ago and I did not have a relapse - this tea killed the cold virus! :)
I especially appreciate this remedy because I have a highly reactive immune system and have had allergic reactions to at least a couple of OTC cold medications - the upshot of which is that, rather than risk an adverse reaction, I don't take anything other than pain reliever when I'm sick, and just rely on the old methods of rest, lots of fluids, etc. - and spicy tomato tea! My heartfelt thanks for Jean for coming up with this comforting, nutritious and healing concoction."

After his third cup he felt better then ever. BTW it tasted better, and was easier to drink (less spicy) when it was raw, and not blended, to do this, he squashed the garlic with hands and squashed the tomato with a bended spoon and knife. To be honest, he didn't think it work at first, but he proved himself wrong after one sip."

Thanks so much"
12/01/2011: Mmsg from Somewhere, Europe replies: "Naturelover, I cannot stand too spicy, so I put just a bit in my concoction and it also worked. Even a 1/4 of a tsp. for me is unbearable, so just a few grains does work too. You take it from there as to how much would be right for you. Not always is more better."
12/01/2011: Lily from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia replies: "Hi Naturelover, if you're using tabasco sauce or any of the hot sauces in the little bottle then just add a few drops, taste and add more if needed. If using cayenne pepper powder then use about 1/8 of a teaspoon or less and try. Lily."

I assume my body is sweating out toxins which should continue to help! Thanks so much!"

Otc nasal spray worked great but had to quit that stuff after 3 days (read that it could cause long term problems). Have been doing the neti pot thing every day for a couple of weeks now but with not much night time relief. Found your recipe yesterday and juiced a couple cups worth of home grown tomato juice, 4 garlic cloves, and 1 large whole lemon - added approx. 2 tbl spoons of cayenne hot sauce and 2 cups extra spicy clamato for flavour. Had a hot cup midday and another a couple hours before bed and finally slept good with no congestion all night. I will be drinking tons of this stuff for awhile. Thank you Jean!"

[YEA] 10/23/2011: Teddy from Springfield, Missouri writes: "I have been sick 5 days now: chest congestion and nose clogged with mucus. Little scary with lungs and nose getting clogged and hard to breath. Had good luck with Ginger root and ACV with lemon and honey in green tea. Was not getting enough mucus up to make a differance. The ACV & Ginger did help my inflamation.
Today I found the remedy for Tomato Tea. I cannot eat large amounts of red pepper but I was willing to try. I made 1 coffee mug full and when I heat it up to keep it hot. I set the mug into a pan of water to let it get hot. And take in the steam from the water and the tea at the same times into my nose and lungs being careful not to get burned. Mucus has broken up in my nose and I was able to clear some pretty yucky stuff. And my congestion in my chest was able to begin breaking up more productive. Even if my nose clogs again I at lest know what just blew out would not have come up on it's own.
Thanks so much for keeping feedback alive. I feel like I can eat something for supper now. And I have not been able to eat more than light soup all day. I will plan to sip some more of this Tomato tea after supper.
With luck my congestion and clogged nose will stay clear."

I made the tea 15minutes ago and I feel like someone took a vacuum cleaner and drained out my sinuses. Problem was I dislike garlic and it causes me acid reflux so towards the end of the drink I swallowed a big chunk of chopped garlic and almost threw up. I ran to drink water and chew a tums to hold down the tea and quit burping. I was successful and it looks like I might be able to sleep tonight :)!"

[YEA] 08/14/2011: Edward from Smithville, Mo, Usa writes: "I had been dealing with sinus problems for around 6 or 7 weeks. I had a tooth pulled and it upset my sinuses. It pretty much ruined my Summer as I was always miserable due to the sinus pressure and other side effects (I started thinking every little ache and pain was a new part of the sinus pressure and that I had something very serious). I had gone to the doctor twice for it, the first time I was prescribed Augmentin and a refill of it. I took it and was almost feeling better but hadn't gotten completely better. He then changed his diagnosis to "allergies", though didn't check what I was allergic to nor referred me to an allergist. Honestly, I'm still unsure if it is or isn't allergies. I took the allergy medicine for a few days but it didn't do much good in making the symptoms go away or preventing them from getting worse.
I hit a point where I was getting flat out miserable. I started losing a lot of sleep (probably had about 9 or 10 nights where I didn't sleep more than a couple of hours). It hit the point I even discussed it with my parents and had a nervous breakdown. I thought it would go away after a few days, but at this point it had lasted from the end of June right up to the beginning of school (which starts tomorrow as I type this). It made me so mad that I had wasted the whole Summer feeling this way, and my doctor seemed completely clueless as to what was up. We (me and my parents) decided I needed to cut out the medicine for now to see if my body could kick the disease. As well, we cleaned up my room quite a bit and put the de-humidifier in there to clean the air (we have had mold, but its been there awhile plus nobody else has symptoms from it). I was still having trouble sleeping though due to the symptoms of the sinus pressure in my head. It sucked because all it was was pressure moving between my head and chest. No sore throat, no coughing problems... just pressure, clear mucus, and a stuffy nose.
I hit a point after a couple of nights where I felt I was close to kicking the disease, BUT I had been here before and it would come back with a vengeance. I decided to look online to see if there was anything that could possibly finish the job. I saw the recipe here for the tomato tea and decided it was worth a shot.
Now, let me say that I am no cooking pro and know very little about herbal/natural remedies. I've stuck to my medicines pretty close (as needed, of course), so I had my reservations both in the effectiveness of the "tea" and if I could make it correctly.
I took a large dose of it yesterday and noticed my chest started clearing up as I drank it. But my head didn't feel much better right away, so I thought maybe that was as far as it would go. I drank it earlier in the day so I wouldn't have the "wake up and feel better" thing. I was hoping maybe it would make me feel better by the end of the day.
However, I went to bed still feeling a good amount of pressure in my head, ready to give this a review of "better, but not cured". I went to bed early so I ended up waking up early too. I was amazed that for the first couple of hours, my head felt so much better I honestly thought the pressure was gone. I walked around a bit and found there was a little bit left but it was MUCH more bearable. I even was able to go back to sleep with the pressure in my head (which had been a MAJOR problem during the six weeks). I have had another smaller mug since then and it helped even more since then. I anticipate I ought to be over this soon. Maybe the sinuses will kick up later and maybe I do have allergies, but now I can focus on my senior year of college and be ready to kick this semester's butt with full focus on work and not stressing about sinuses or having trouble sleeping.
I SO wish I had thought of this beforehand. It would have saved me (and my family) a lot of stress, but ya can't cry over spilt milk as they say. Thank you so much."

Replies[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 06/05/2011: Rachel from Nashville, Tn replies: "Better but not cured, keep taking!Being very big into natural medicine, I wanted the tea to save my very bad cold. Mostly I have had severe sinus clogging and pain in the front of my head, as well constant dripping from my nasal passage and streaming puffy eyes. In desperate attempt to be better fast, I'm on my 4th glass in two days. The sickness is definetly moving a lot quicker, I feel like I may be able to kick it in 3-4 days as opposed to 8-10. I've also been alternating it with ACV and honey, Eucalyptus oil on feet and under nose, salt water Neti through nose and salt water gargle, kelp and vit cleanse every morning. I surely feel like this is a great solution to combatting, and my cold was very very bad! It's moving quickly now, and all ready on it's way out after two days! I would say keep taking it, like medicine, at least twice-three times a day to max. Results. I tweaked the recipe a little by using:
Can of Crushed organic tomato mixed with purified water
6 large cloves of galic (Yes)
juice of 1/2 lemon
Sriracha, as much as you can possibly handle
4 shakes of cayenne pepper
pinch of salt and basil to taste
I also chased it with water : ) and made sure I had a little bit of food in my stomach. Hope this helps!"

I woke up as though I had never had a cold but later in the day I started feeling it again so mixed up another hot one. I say HOT cause my wife makes me Habanaro hot sauce and I can stand a lot of it but I know now that the cold virus sure does not like it. www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/tomato_tea.html
here is what I had to use for the recipe bcz I couldnt get my butt out of bed to get V8 juice:
2 Cups Bold n Spicy Bloody Mary Mix(95% juice)
3 cloves garlic (more if you can)--I used minced garlic I had and I used about 3 tsp of that(i love garlic :D )
2 TBSP Lemon juice (i used the pre bottled lemon juice)
Hot Sauce (the more the better)
Heated it up and drank it like a tea, not too bad of a taste either :)
I had also used the hydrogen peroxide and sea salt saline rinse, and drank the apple cider vinegar last night(that was disgusting! )but I am feeling better than I was, and am able to force myself to go to work and school today... Hopefully if I keep all these things up, my sinus infection will go away! The HP Sea Salt rinse really helped clear up my stubborn clogged left sinus(it was blocked for a week, one day after using it 2x a day its draining out like crazy). I would love to see feedback on here! Or if anyone else has tried other tomato tea versions too and if others got the same reults as I did :)"
