[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] 04/18/2011: Rj from Brisbane, Australia writes: "Hi. I just read an Earth Clinic report on your site (dated 11/21/2006) that casts doubt on whether H2O2 therapy might cause gastrointestinal problems. I just wanted to give you some feedback on the subject, based on personal experience. I've been on H2O2 therapy for a few weeks - long enough to see a few subtle changes for the better - but one down-side that I've also noticed is that I get very severe reflux as a result. My better half started the therapy at the same time as me, and he takes the same dose of H2O2 as me, but he hasn't had any reflux problems.
There's one main difference between the two of us however - I had a pretty nasty gastric reflux problem to start with (had it for years) whereas he doesn't have a pre-existing condition of this kind. So while I'm not saying that H2O2 actually causes gastric problems, I am saying that it might irritate pre-existing problems of that type in some people - particularly if the problem is already fairly severe to start with. I find it helps if I take my reflux medication during or before taking my daily H2O2 dose, and I also get better results if I don't let my stomach stay empty for too long after ingesting H2O2. It doesn't stop the reflux completely, unfortunately, but it seems to reduce the severity quite a bit."
Replies07/20/2011: Rhandi from Wichita, Kansas, Usa replies: "This is the exact same scenario with me and my husband. Have you tried taking 1/4 tsp baking soda with your H2O2? I had the same issue until I started doing that. So are you saying you don't wait the full 3 hours after you take the H2O2, before you eat? I'm thinking of trying that--maybe wait 2.5 hours, to see how I do..."

02/28/2011: Fxgirl from Miami, Florida, U.s. writes: "I began my H2O2 therapy three days ago, diluted 10 drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide in 200 ml. of mineral water. I noticed a feeling of cut skin on the palm of my hands, one of them being an actual cut. Has anyone heard of this being a side effect?"
Replies02/28/2011: Michelle from Cambridge, Cambs, Uk replies: "Dear fxgirl, in reply to your feeling of cut hands. I think you may have dropped some undiluted H2O2 onto your hands, even as little sprinkles. This will cause stinging and white skin patches, that feel like cuts. I have done this to myself! Just try not to spill, and wash hands after using H2O2 just in case."
03/01/2011: Fxgirl from Miami, Florida, U.s. replies: "Hi Michelle, thank you for your answer. Actually, I know very well how to handle H2O2 because I've always used it externally, so spilling it is not an option. Maybe some other thing is wrong..."
03/01/2011: Michelle from Cambridge, Cambs. Uk replies: "Dear FXGirl, looks like I'm the clumsy one! I hope you find out what it is, because I keep recommending H2O2 to people, and also this fantastic Earth Clinic. Please let us know if you uncover the cause. My gratitude to everyone who posts on this site, especially the founders, and regular stellar advisors."
03/02/2011: Fxgirl from Miami, Florida, U.s. replies: "Hopefully! This cut skin feeling has appeared in my lower eyelid, where the veins are now more visible. Wherever it appears, the veins are more visible.
Regards, Fxgirl."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 01/24/2011: Carol In Nashville Tn from Nashville, Tn, Usa writes: "I started taking H2O2 (35% food grade) 3 drops in 4-6 oz water 3x per day and increased 1 drop per day (I had to increase water amount too) to 14 drops. I have stayed on 14 drops 3x per day for 2 weeks (plan is 3 weeks then decrease back down to 3 drops 3x per day)I have started having pain in my lower abdomen that has gotten to be quite painful. I actually took a day off today as the pain is really concerning me. The only thing I can compare it to is when I had a colonoscopy 4 years and they removed a polyp or 2, I could feel a minor pain then and this current pain is in that area and much more panful than when they removed the polyps. Can anyone (Ted) advise what to do fo this pain? Thanks for your help. I have been reading many things on this site and am amazed at some of the testimonials."
Replies07/20/2011: Rhandi from Wichita, Kansas, Usa replies: "I have the same problem--colon spasms, when I drink anything with caffeine. If you're drinking caffeine as well as doing the H2O2 therapy, you may want to cut down on the caffeine. I can't use apple cider vinegar for the same reason--it's a simulant :("

[SIDE EFFECTS] 06/14/2008: Olivia from Brooklyn, New York writes: "Caution drinking Hydrogen Peroxide: I tried drinking less than a quarter capful of Rite Aid brand 3% hydrogen peroxide this morning in a 12 oz glass of water. I immediately felt my body tingling and I drank another glass of water to dilute the effect. Within minutes I felt a weird sensation and had to rush to the bathroom. I have been rushing to the bathroom practically all morning. I did not know whether to laugh or cry because I suffer from chronic constipation and I thought I welcome the frequent bathroom visits but not due to an upset stomach. I drank another glass of water and continued feeling funny. I went to Rite Aid and spoke to the pharmacist who told me I should be okay. I felt better after having a late breakfast. I have a sensitive stomach and I was told the HP may have been too much of an irritant for it. Just a word of caution if you are going to use 3% like I did for the first time, maybe you should start with one drop and see the effect or diarrhea and a racing pulse may be the side effect for a while. It is now about five hours later and I feel almost normal."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 04/27/2008: Brandon from Berkeley, California writes: "Hi, I wanted to warn people of one potential side effect of hydrogen peroxide therapy. I took it internally as directed on this website and started having palpitations about a week later. These were premature ventricular contractions and progressed to happen in a bigeminal pattern (every other beat) for about a third of every day. I have no prior cardiac history and am a generally health 36 year-old man. I stopped the hydrogen peroxide and they went away. I restarted it after a week of no palpitations to test the theory that it may be due to the hydrogen peroxide and they came back. Stopped it again, and they went away. Premature ventricular contractions are not usually harmful, but are disturbing and it also sent me on a wild cardiac goose chase (including a $2500 echocardiogram) because I didn't consider that it could be related to the hydrogen peroxide therapy."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 12/12/2007: Alan from Amsterdam, Netherlands writes: "Hello, everytime I take hydrogenperoxde by drinking 1-3 35% drops in a glass of tapwater or gargling, I get stings in my heart afterwards. What is the reason for this? I think about stopping hydrogen peroxide. Thank you"
Replies08/04/2011: Rhandi from Wichita, Kansas, Usa replies: "Not sure if this could be the problem, but you're supposed to take it with distilled water--never tap water..."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 01/12/2012: Jason from Witham, Essex, England writes: "Hi, I inhaled some hydrogen peroxide 3% from the chemist using a nasal spray into my mouth 4 days ago. I did about 4 pumps 4 times about every 2 hours.
Since then I have a burning sensation in my chest, is this normal or should I seek medical advice?

01/01/2012: Elizabeth from Byhalia, Ms, Usa writes: "Why is Lugol's causing me to have horrible pain and nausea in stomach? Should I be using Lugol's transdermally? When first discovering the benefits of iodine, I started with an over the counter iodine tincture. It really gave me better results. Is using this safe or perhaps another brand such as Provodine used transdermally? thanks alot"
Replies01/04/2012: Francisca from Zug, Switzerland replies: "Elizabeth, I have never found Lugol's in Europe (although it was developed by a French doctor, Dr. Jean Lugol). We do travel to several countries but no one seems to know it so I have resorted to Kelp and never had a problem. Maybe worth trying.... I have no idea what the differences between both are! I intend to read a book on Iodine soon!"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 11/24/2011: Cecile from Cape Town, South Africa writes: "Firstly, my sincere thank you to all at EC for providing this great platform for discussion and advice.
I have started supplementing with Lugols iodine, the prescribed dose of 50mg or 8dr a day the prophylactic dosage for fibrocystic disease... Been doing this for 3 weeks... I have experienced normal detox reactions... BUT to my absolute horror, my weight is increasing at an alarming rate... 5kg in 3 weeks! WHA! Anybody else with this experience? Will the situation remedy itself with time? I urgently need advice..."
Replies11/27/2011: Mmsg from Somewhere, Europe replies: "Cecile, you started off with too much. Read the posts here and start VERY slowly, as in ONE drop for a while, then TWO etc."
11/27/2011: Cecile from Cape Town, South Africa replies: "Thank you so much for your feedback and support.. 'somewhere in europe'... I have cut back a few days ago and my weight has stabilised... Hope so.. I believe iodine is the answer to the myriad of problems I have, and refuse to give up... The web filled with standard anti-iodine propagada, iodonophobia, scared the living daylights out of me... I was led to believe I have caused damage to my already weary body... But I kept searching... I found peace. The MOST important thing with iodine supplementation is to remember salt loading and selenium... I have neglected those...HERE is to all you 'iodine fans' out there... to health and hope! Keep spreading the good news, but most of all, tell us 'rookies' about your great successes...
THANK YOU EC community, especially Ted and Bill... I appreciate you patience and all the time you spend at your computers typing up advice... I salute you!"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 09/22/2011: Yasmin from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada writes: "Hi, I have just made a big mistake. I have hyopthyroidism and melasma, and somehow got it into my head that I desperately needed iodine. So I went to the health food store and bought a bottle of iodine with dropper. Not sure what kind. It just says iodine on it. I started with one drop, then took more, up to eight drops, over the course of four days.
On the fifth day I woke up to an absolute nightmare on my face, that is continuing. I have pimples EVERYWHERE. I am terrified, disgusted, and afraid to be seen. I have been wiping my face with ACV, drinking it, drinking grapefruit seed extract, and slathered on Burt's Bees anti-blemish spot treatment but they just keep appearing. My face is now full of melasma and acne. It's a nightmare.
Can anyone please tell me what is going on with me? I had a full hormonal panel done and it's all normal. My liver seems to be normal. I wash my face twice a day. I try to use only organic/natural products. I am a vegetarian who eats pretty well most of the time. I exercise three times a week. I believe the iodine, which I stopped immediately, is causing this. But when will it end? And why on earth did it do this. Does anyone know?"
Replies09/22/2011: Lisa from Rabat, Morocco replies: "Hi Yasmin, are you using Lugol's iodine? If it is a tincture of iodine that should not be taken orally. The acne could be caused from detoxing bromide, which we are exposed to everyday. If you take extra unrefined salt (celtic or himalayan) that can help push out the bromides, but because of the nature of acne it will not disappear overnight. I take a lot of iodine and did have this problem initially, but it did go away."
09/23/2011: Gavin from Manganui, Northland, New Zealand replies: "Some areas on the globe are deficient in iodine. (hence high goiter incidence therefore governments idodising salt. ) But if Iodine is deficient it figures all the other trace elements are low or missing as well.. Which if this is the case, all the essential trace elements work in unison, and favoring one won't do much. A daily intake of Salmon or Tuna fix this in about three months. Remember for years they thought Boron wasnt necessary! Failing this, get some supplements organised."

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] 07/29/2011: Leslie from Dallas, Texas writes: "My husband has been directed by our holistic physician to treat 2 small basal cell carcinomas (one on forehead, one on arm) with doses of strong iodine. While it seems to be working, we have discovered and remembered that he is allergic to iodine, and is experiencing a severe acne breakout. tough for a 56 yr old executive to deal with. any other suggestions?
Thank you"
Replies07/30/2011: Lisa from Rabat, Morocco replies: "Hi Leslie,A very small percentage of people are actually allergic to iodine. Your husband sounds like he is having a detox reaction from too much bromide in his system. This happens when your detox pathways are not optimal. The iodine pushes the bromide out and if your body cannot remove it properly then you get things like acne. It is recommended to take certain supplements with iodine--Vitamin C (2000-5000 mg), Magnesium (400 mg), Selenium (200-400 mg) and 1/2 tsp. Unrefined sea salt. In addition, to help with detox you can also add 1/2 tsp. Sea salt in 1/2 cup warm water followed by 12 oz. Of water. This should be repeated every 30-45 minutes til urination. I am taking almost 50 mg. Of lugol's iodine and did have some acne, but it will clear up eventually. I think iodine is very important for many functions in the body and your husband should not dismiss it. Best of luck."
07/31/2011: Rob from Manhattan, Ny replies: "question for Leslie.. How did the Dr. Advise to administer it? Orally & topically or just orally... & how much? Let us know if you have had any success.thanks!"

04/18/2011: Madrona from Victoria, Bc, Canada writes: "I'm hoping Ted can respond to this, and would appreciate hearing from anyone else who has also experienced thyroid pain after supplementing with iodine.
I am a 38 year old woman diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/M.E., endometriosis and fibromyalgia. I have read Dr. Mark Starr's book and 6 weeks ago began iodine supplementation (1-2 drops daily of Now Brand liquid iodide: about 12. 5 mg/day). After two weeks or so, I was awakened in the middle of the night by a fairly acute pain in the front of my throat, I assume it was my thyroid gland. It lasted for maybe 10 minutes before it gradually faded away. It has not returned, but I am very curious about this apparent "thyroid cramp. " Do you have any thoughts on this?
Also, I have lately been having tachycardia* and have a few days feeling terribly cold all the time, followed by heat rushes. I have had some significant night sweats also. I am also doing NAET therapy and currently detoxing for NAET dx: "EMF toxicity" for 5 weeks. I am supplementing with Vitamin C (1-2000 mg/day), D (4-5000 IU), Magnesium Citrate (250 mg/day), "Orti B" B complex (1/day), and Ashwaganda (750 mg 2x/day). I am also taking an herbal liver detox formula with Milk Thistle and Dandelion root, and an herbal blend tincture for painful periods, as well as 1 drop food grade hydrogen peroxide in water 2x/daily. I am using caution with amounts because I am extremely sensitive to all meds and chemicals. I believe I have heavy metal toxicity and am going to begin on some modified citrus pectin soon, but I am not sure that I should be doing all of this at once, or if I should stagger my interventions.
*(I have had intermittent arrythmia, tachycardia and bradycardia along with intermittent muscle weakness since prescribed a few different synthetic progestins a few years ago, and hospitalized for the severe muscle weakness that ensued. The western docs could not find a satisfying cause of all this, aside from 1 elevated cortisol test and 1 deficient potassium (both of which righted themselves in subsequent tests), and low vitamin D. The symptoms are lessening in severity but I still get it at certain points in my cycle: seemingly ovulation and prior to menses.)
Thank you kindly in advance for any comments or suggestions!
:) Madrona"

LEMON AND BS WITH HBP

[SIDE EFFECTS] 09/07/2007: PL from Naples, Florida,USA writes: "I have had HBP for many years, and finally gave in to the doctors and started on BP meds. I was taking the meds for about one year and then I found earth clinic. I started off taking the lemon juice/baking soda 2-3 times a day and I started to wean off the BP meds. I couldn't find any info on how to get off the meds so I took a pill every other day , then 1/2 pill for three days, then stopped all together. I checked my presure 3-4 times per day and it was 125/65 or close to that most of the time. I was very happy because I hate taking the meds...after nine days off the meds and nice low bBP readings, yesterday turned into a nightmare!
I woke up in the morning with my head spinning, the room was spinning and I was very dizzy, I had shortness of breath and I was very scared. My BP was very high. My husband came home and rushed me to the doctor. He was very upset that I stopped the meds and said I was lucky I didn't have a stroke. He said I had a rebound reaction and my BP was very high, with racing heart. I am back on the meds and wondering what happened. The doctor said NEVER take baking soda when you have high pressure! The lemon or ACV does not balance the sodium with potassium. I love natural cures, so now I will have to try to find another way to not have an acid PH. The doc says I will always have to take BP meds the rest of my life( I'm 55) Does any body out there know what happened? I still feel a little dizzy today, and am discouraged. I don't want anyone else to go through what I just did."

MOLASSES

03/18/2009: Dianna from Austin, Tx writes: "i wanted to take blackstrap molasses and after trying a teaspoon of it in my morning coffee had very bad side effects that included high blood sugar, diaherrea, cramps and dizziness. so i stopped after 2 days. however that month when my period came i noticed that i had no cramping or clots at all. so i realized that the molasses (even taken that 2 times with the bad side effects) had a good effect on my period. so i tried taking it again with similar side effects and had to stop.
however, i realized that i could eat it in cookies. it doesn't have side effects when i make whole wheat gingerbread cookies sweetened with molasses. so i figured maybe just taking it directly in coffee was what was the problem. so i tried putting 1/2 a teaspoon in my daily smoothie! success! now i am taking a teaspoon a day in my daily smoothie!
i thought i would post this for other people who for whatever reason found they couldn't take blackstrap molasses straight. seems that when it is mixed with food that it doesn't have any of the side effects - which from what i've learned seem to be from the natural occuring sulfites."

Replies02/06/2009: Helen from Long Island, NY replies: "I wrote yesterday about having hives which I attribute to taking molasses. Well, after trying many remedies for the hives, I finally have relief from rubbing the hives with garlic! I was so desperate that I remembered garlic was so good for so many things, what did I have to lose. I tried it on a little spot and since it didn't burn, I tried it on another spot and it seemed to take the itch out. I am hoping it is the magic remedy. I have used many of the remedies on Earth Clinic and most of them have worked, so I hope this one does too. I love Earth Clinic; it is the first place I go for first aid."

It provides me with a lot of energy. After a run, i normally get tired but takign 2 teaspoons with a drink, i don't feel the need for a nap. However, the calories in it makes you very fat if you don't work it off and I noticed that it gives me a lot of phlegm when I take it."

MSM
03/21/2011: Mary from New York, Ny writes: "I started with 1500mg once a day. Empty stomach in the morning.
1-Nausea (not too bad) 15 minutes after
2-Sleeplessness and feeling some "electricity" or my "blood running" inside my body .
3- My stomach making a lot of noise. but I think now it happen after I ate bread.
Now I am taking 3 pills a day 4500mg and sleep like a baby and no more nauseas"
Replies03/21/2011: Wendy from Ontario, Canada replies: "that is awesome that you started slow and work your way up. My dad is almost 70 and can take up to 9 a day... My husband 46 is also at 9 a day after he broke his arm 2 yrs ago and then again last year after a chainsaw injury to his leg. No side effects... But he was also taking lots of d (his blood test was really low) and lots of vitamin c and I made him drink tons of water every day. I have heard it is really really important to drink lots of water. I have the book the miracle of msm and it is an awesome read- actually I have 2 copies and I loan one out ;-) I also have a large MSM article I printed out from an online website but I don't think I'm allowed to post the link to that... It is said to be the official website for msm. I printed it out almost 3 years ago and it is dogeared beyond belief. I reread it all the time at breakfast, in the bathroom etc. Because you forget how many amazing uses it has!!! Wish there was more studies on breastfeeding and pregnancy and taking it. I know most people just say it's a supplement but I always err on the side of caution so I will have to wait until I am done nursing."
03/21/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Mary, I think that you are supposed to start with a smaller dose of MSM and not take it in an empty stomach. It didn't do much for me (I went up to maybe 5g a day) but I will try an MSM drink soon which also contains glucosamin and chondroitin."

02/28/2011: Melba from Tallahassee, Fl Usa writes: "For the past two weeks I have been drinking the borax, shilajit (fulvic acid), L-gutamine, and apple cidar vinegar in a 32 oz glass of water throughout the day. Hoping to draw out heavy metals and fluoride, and the l-glutamine for yeast. 4 days on, 3 days off as was suggested on here.
The third day of the second week I had tremendous anxiety. Crying, tremendous worry, racing thoughts. I had to stay home from work because my heart was racing so much. Anyone who has had anxiety knows the feeling of all the muscles being tight, yet feeling like electricity shooting through them.
Could this be a symptom of detox????"
02/28/2011: Coco from Teaneck, Nj replies: "For Melba, any even the slowest detox will agrevate you anxiety. I am in the same shoes for 10 years. Your body is over sensitive and you have to handle it very sensible too. Slow down and take your time with any detox......"

NO it isn't! If it makes you sick or gives you a rash, headaches, heart palpitations, or whatever, it is NOT normal and you shouldn't be using it, no matter how healthy it's supposed to be or how good it makes other people feel. Please listen to what your body is trying to tell you instead of relying on all the hype."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/29/2009: Tammy from Lincoln, Iowa writes: "Recently I have gotten a couple of small cuts or nicks. Very small. They should have bled a bit but stopped after a minute of pressure, but they didn't. It took a few minutes with a tightly wrapped bandage. -Which got soaked. It wasn't frightening, as I said they were small nicks. But I wonder what if I really got hurt.
What I want to know is, is something ,or a combination of things, that I am taking making my blood thinner? Here is a list of what I take daily.
2 tsp dietary supplement oil
2 caps mineral dietary supplement
2 Tbs tea dietary supplement
1 Tbs raw local honey
2 Tbs ACV
1 Tbs coconut oil
1 Tbs black strap molasses
1/4 tsp turmeric
1/4 tsp cayenne
1/4 tsp cinnamon"
07/31/2009: T from Maryland, USA replies: "I'l leave it to wiser folk to advise on which of those may be contributing to your blood thinning, but I wanted to let you know that vitamin K will help blood coagulation, so you might want to increase your intake of it. This page from the Linus Pauling Institute has lots of good info on Vitamin K (which is also important for bone health), and lists some food sources of it:
