INTRODUCTION

Oil Pulling ("OP") is reported to cure: Mouth & Gum Disease; Stiff Joints; Allergies; Asthma; High Blood Sugar; Constipation; Migraines; Bronchitis; Eczema; Heart, Kidney, Lung Diseases; Leukemia; Arthritis; Meningitis; Insomnia; Menopause (hormonal issues); Cancer; AIDS; Chronic Infections; Varicose Veins; High Blood Pressure; Diabetes; Polio; Cracked Heels.

Here's are a few paragraphs from Bharat Savur's article on The Hindu Business Online

..."When Dr Karsch examined the gargled milk-white oil under a microscope with 600 magnification, he saw live organisms swimming in it. It's poisonous, so never swallow it, he warns. These poisons are bacteria-embryos, which, if not eliminated, cause diseases. Apparently, Dr Karsach cured his own chronic blood disease and 15-year-old arthritis.

The first sign of improvement is in the teeth-they become firm and white, he says. Other healing indications: fresh, relaxed feeling on waking up, disappearing dark pouches below the eyes, anew appetite and energy, better memory and deep sleep.

Dr Karsch swears by the mouth oil-wash for anything from organ-disorders, skin-diseases, menstrual problems, paralysis to every ache and it is in the human anatomy. You can gargle even when you have fever, he says, adding, it takes anything from two days to a year to cure a disease.

And if these claims sound exaggerated, he told a conference of Ukrainian cancer specialists, try out the process yourself.

Interestingly, Ayurveda advises oil gargling "to purify the taste-buds and the entire system", as explained by Dr Deepak Chopra in Perfect Health. According to this life science, the tongue is mapped by organ-locations -- that is, each section of the tongue is connected to the kidneys, lungs, spleen, liver, heart, pancreas, small intestines, stomach, colon, and spine.

Thus, an oil-mouth-massage soothes and stimulates the key meridians where taste meets organ. Simultaneously, as in any skin-massage, the inner skin and lining of the mouth, palate and tongue become warm and supple and the lubrication prevents dryness (the vatic effect).

In modern dietetics too, dryness is discussed. For example, lack of Vitamin A (retinal) causes the outer lining of the eyeball to dry and wrinkle, and affects vision.

And as any dietician would tell you, all oils contain 960 micrograms of vitamin A per 10 gm (the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A per adult is 600 micrograms). So, it's possible that oil gargling helps in reaching the required retinal to the eyeballs and keeps them elastic and smooth.

Likewise, the Ayurvedic `purification of taste-buds' also has its equivalent in dietetics as `antioxidants'. Oxidation literally means `the putrefaction of body-tissues'.

And oil-soluble vitamins, A, C, D, and E are antioxidants that protect and prevent the decaying process and help maintain the integral functioning of cell membranes. That's why, many people are ingesting vitamin E pills to stem `aging' (oxidation)."

11/8/2006: Laura from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia writes, "I wanted to comment that the usage of the word "gargle" on your Oil Pulling page is a tad alarming given the warning NOT to gargle in the throat near the end of the instructions. It seems Dr. Karasch used it as well. I have never heard or used the word "gargle" unless it meant using the throat, so it is a tad misleading for the unsuspecting or the casual reader. Perhaps the alert could be placed at the beginning of the article to clarify the usage of the word and for safety's sake. Thank you for your time."

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

[YEA]  03/28/2008: Molly from San Francisco, CA USA writes: "I've OPed for about three years now. And I've followed endless discussions about what it does and does not do. I now have a theory.

I don't think that OP "pulls" anything out of the system. What it does seem to do is infuse your body with EFA's sublingually (under your tongue) which enters the bloodstream bypassing gastric juices. I found a patent that uses oil as a transporter of medication for a sublingual medication. From what I read, Oleic Acid is commonly used for this transport.

It makes sense why some people have skin conditions clear up with OP. They are being dose with good oil.

Secondly, there is now do doubt that the health of your mouth is directly linked to your organ health. A well known biologist, a friend of my Dad, said he thinks that the bacteria in the mouth, the really bad stuff that forms plague, is very attracted to the acids in the oil. So it melts this bad stuff and then you spit it out. That's why your teeth get much cleaner than by conventional means, like alcohol based rinses.

And so, when you melt this bad stuff, you simply spit it out..buh bye.

Now, I think this is the major link to why people experience healing while OP. As your mouth is populating with all this nasty bacteria (or worse, infections), you are swallowing the stuff. That bacteria is attacking you internally. That is why some people have had heart attacks after a dental procedure, like a root canal, that infuses their body with nasty stuff. Yes, it can attack the heart and other vital organs.

OP simply removes it so that it cannot go anywhere else. Dr. Karach talked about curing a long time blood disease. Perhaps his dental health was very bad.

Add a drop of Oil of Oregano to your oil pulling for about a week every 3 or so months, and you have a powerful anti-bacterial agent to kill all this stuff. Oregano Oil is natures anti-biotic, so it should not be abused, and used just like you would a pharmaceutical anti-biotic.

All these theories I have come from a long time listening and discussing this modality.

OP is very gentle. It's just food for goodness sake! And I believe that it should be a common morning occurrence, just like brushing your teeth.

I've actually used it to get rid of sinus infections and lung infections. It has cut down on the time I am sick, but darn if I've hardly gotten sick since I've started OP. Also, my long time seasonal allergies are gone. If I do have any lung complaints, I OP back to back until I don't cough anything up anymore.

I have used (always unrefined and organic) Sesame, Sunflower, Walnut, Macadamia, coconut, Udo's Oil, Total EFA Oil....amongst others. My personal all time favorite is Sesame, hand's down. I have noticed that if you change your oil about ever two months, it's like a renewed therapy. Don't know why, perhaps your body is getting used to that particular EFA formula. But I have noticed that when I change, my teeth get whiter even more.

Thought I'd weigh in since I haven't been here for awhile. Actually, it was myself and Ms Kitty from Oregon that turned Earth clinic onto this some years back. I'm so pleased to see that this is still being discovered and that people are having such good results.

OP is a no-brainer. It's not dangerous, it can't pull stuff out of your body, like medication, it's simply swishing some "food" around your mouth. But what it does do is invaluable.

Keep Swishing!!"

01/21/2009: Edna from Solomon, Kansas, USA replies: "I wanted to add a note concerning the addition of a drop or two of Oil of Oregano during the OP. You'll want to make sure that you get ORGANIC oil, and not only that, but make sure it is labeled as "Oil of WILD OREGANO! What sells under the label "Oil of Oregano" or "Oregano Oil" is really Marjoram, and does NOT possess the wonderful, natural, anti-biotic properties of Oil of Wild Oregano. Don't let 'em fool ya!

It is oil from a specific wild plant (not the same plant known in Spain as "oregano" and used in cooking) that grows on the hillsides of the Mediterranean region which is the real deal. It is the most powerful anti-biotic agent in nature.

I wouldn't have known the difference if someone hadn't once told me, so I wanted to pay it forward. Thank you for the opportunity.

Loving this site! :0)

Be blessed!!"

"These are instructions from India in which only 2 types of oil can be used. However, as you will read below in our Reader Feedback section, people are experimenting with different oils, adding anti-bacterial and anti-viral oil essences. Soon we might have a purist vs. renegade oil pulling battle!

INSTRUCTIONS:

First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking, take 1 TBSP of either sesame or sunflower oil. Put the oil in your mouth, tilt your chin up and slowly swish, suck, chomp and pull through the teeth. Do this for at least 10 minutes. 15 - 20 minutes is better. You want the oil to become a thin, white foam when you finally spit it out. If it's still yellow, you haven't done it long enough.

You can do this 2 more times during the day if you want to detox faster. Make sure you do it on an empty stomach, however. Spit it out in the toilet when your mouth is full and rinse your mouth out well.

Follow by drinking 2 - 3 glasses of water.

DO NOT SWALLOW THE OIL.
It now contains parasites and bacteria!

DO NOT GARGLE IN THE THROAT -- THE OIL IS MEANT TO BE SWISHED IN THE MOUTH ONLY.

DO IT SLOWLY.

HOW IT WORKS:
The oil pulls all mucous, bacteria and toxins from your body through your saliva. According to Ayurvedic medicine, mucous is a poison that must be removed.

Note #1:
Keeping the chin tilted up makes sure the oil gets to the back molars.

Note #2:
The old school says that only sesame and sunflower oils produce favorable results. However, our readers report success using other oils too.

Note #3:
If after meals, wait at least 4 hours before you Oil Pull. After drinking, wait 1 hour.

Note #4:
A worsening of symptoms is an excellent indication that the disease/ailment is being cured.

Note #5:
Do not stop Oil Pulling if you feel aggravated symptoms or heightened side effects after a day or two. Your body is healing.

Note #6:
Will your dental fillings fall out? It's possible but highly unlikely unless there is pre-existing damage or loose fillings.

The oil will start to thin out after a few minutes because saliva is constantly being mixed in and swished about.

[YEA]  08/29/2008: Knute from Sacramento, USA replies: "I was fortunate to find out about Dr Karach's oil pulling therapy over 16 years ago, and my objective was to improve my immune system, as a preventative. And it certainly has done so, for example, the number of colds has gone down a lot. Plus, my digestion has improved very much. Also, I can go on for more hours without feeling the need to eat.

I mostly use sesame oil, peanut oil, and sunflower oil: Once per day, one table spoon in the morning, before breakfast, 5-7 days a week. I have found that it's very important to rinse the oral cavity and tonge with baking soda/salt in warm water, and brush all of the same area - including the tongue, after applying just a little baking soda and salt on the toothbrush.

Basically, my opinion is that oil pulling is one of the very best ways to stimulate the body's natural healing abilities, and that includes detoxification. 15-20 minutes in the morning of oil pulling regularly, while taking a shower or shaving or ... - is one of the wisest things we could to, healthwise."

02/09/2009: M from St Louis, MO replies: "EC, Could you include with the basic instructions on oil pulling Ted's suggestion to detox for two weeks before beginning the oil pulling process? I think he recommended using 1 tablespoon ACV with 1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, stir well, add 1/2 to 1 cup of water and drink one or two times a day for two weeks; OR, take 2 tablespoons of lemon juice plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water taken two times a day. The alkalization tends to remove toxins if done for at least two weeks. Then on the second or third week they can start oil pulling. This regimen is supposed to greatly reduce the Herksheimer effect of getting worse before you get better. It seems like many people are just starting out with the oil pulling first and wanting to quit because they didn't prepare properly and are suffering from the Herksheimer effect."

11/23/2010: Hansika from Jakarta, West Jawa replies: "Just tried Oil Pulling with sunflower oil... Wondering how people can do it for 20 mins? I had to spit it out after 7 mins as could not hold it any longer. The saliva mixed with the oil made it very liquid and a lot for me to hold in my mouth whils swishing it around, also my mouth muscles were kind of tired. When I spat it out, it was white but very runny. Would I be able to do it longer with practice?"

11/24/2010: Hansika from Jakarta, Indonesia replies: "Hi, I could do it for 10 mins. Today. Had to spit it out or it would have gone down my throat. What I spat was white and foamy but still very runny. Am I doing it correct?"

11/26/2010: Linda from San Antonio, Texas replies: "I have been oil pulling for about 8 months, mostly with sunflower oil. Usually when I spit it out after 20 minutes, the oil is yellowish white and creamy in appearance. For the last couple of days, it has been yellow and I noticed a metallic taste in my mouth while doing the op. Last night, my throat started burning after about 8 minutes and I had to stop. I have been taking colloidal silver in a different concentration for about a week, could this be causing the change in the oil's appearance and taste? Or is it a symptom of detoxing from something? Has anyone heard of these results while oil pulling? Thanks for your answers and God Bless this site! I have used many wonderful remedies from Earth Clinic."

12/07/2010: Catherine from Wellington, New Zealand replies: "Hi, like Hansika I had a very rough start to oil pulling. Started with 1 Tbsp sesame oil but couldn't hold it beyond 30 seconds before gagging reflex. I persevered each day for a week but never got beyond 2 minutes plus what I spat out looked like virulent yellow paint! That was some months ago. I have always detested the smell and texture of fats and oils although I can take cod liver oil without too much trouble, recently I have discovered that EVCO is quite palatable (it is always a hard consistency in this climate so can be chewed)

After reading some feedback about starting small and being occupied while swishing Ihave given it another go, this time with EVCO. Day 1- 1 tsp for 5 mins: Day 2- 2tsp for 10 mins: Today is day 3 and have been swishing for 20 mins while cruising EC and writing this.... So if you have trouble with OP start small and find an oil you can tolerate. Love EC"

12/13/2010: Tanya from Hailey, Id, Usa replies: "Since 2006, I started getting serious pains in my left jaw, teeth and tongue. 4 doctors looked at me and couldn't find anything wrong. I thought it was TNA (trigeminal neuralgia) but the pains would not be quite as nasty as described for those victims. Middle of November, I started a craving a fresh doughnut not thinking very highly of myself through depression and constant pain. I also had a lump in my tongue that I'd had before in other spots, so I could tell that I was so stressed that I was straining my tongue very hard during sleep. I don't have a grinding issue, nor TMJ. Each day was worse and worse until I was exhausted and piling into the tub every night with a fever, taking at least 4 ibuprofen a day and going to bed early. Then it hit me on 11.30.10 that I was basically poisoning myself with all the sugar, dough and yeast I had worked so hard to eliminate. I immediately cut it out and looked up EC to see what to do about my sore tongue. Someone mentioned oil pulling in that thread so I was intrigued, then impressed, and finally convinced after what I was reading.

Called my husband and told him to get me a fresh bottle of sesame oil, caught the bus and came home. I couldn't wait until morning to try the oil. It so happened as well, that a cold sore came out on my upper right lip and I was in even MORE pain on the entire right side of my head, neck and back.. I was miserable. Since 12.1.10, I have been using just under a full tablespoon of the sesame oil every morning, making it to 15 minutes but wishing I had more time to do it longer. I sometimes want to do it right before dinner, too. It freshens my mouth and I feel I taste foods better. I follow by a bit of baking soda on my brush and using warm water, brush my teeth normally but without toothpaste. I will use the toothpaste at night just.. Because, I guess.. I like the taste of the sesame and the sensation I get after I spit it out is that I've just eaten a really oily peanut butter cookie - it tastes great to me! Here are my observations and benefits so far:

1 - I have not had to blow my nose for the past 11 days though I've had fevers, pain and what others would think is the flu, but I knew was only stress from my pains. This is huge for me. I would always have to clear my sinuses in the shower upon rising. No more.. And I don't have to do it throughout the day!! I walk to the bus, walk through town and walk to catch the bus every day so I'm pretty active and fit, but I usually have to fight some kind of nasaly thing in the winter -> not at the present time, however, and I am thrilled! .. Amazed, really.

2 - My pains in my left jaw, teeth and tongue stopped and have not been affecting me at all since 12. 1. 10. I am floored at this. It is highly interesting to me that my 'spongy, ' 'bad' teeth are now tighter and feeling like they like being in me for the first time in my life! I have fillings in nearly every tooth and have to do what I can to preserve them because I have those boney growths from my lower jaw into my mouth that prevent me from just getting dentures... Which I don't want, either. I usually had to have 2 glasses of Cabernet every night to get rid of the pain so I could sleep - or a couple ibuprofen. No more.. At present. My teeth feel fresh and tight, happy and content, no throbbing or stabbing pains alerting me to "DO SOMETHING! DO SOMETHING NOW!! ".

3 - My breath is not so bad now.. I also don't 'crave' the floury, doughy things that I was, nor does sugar appeal to me as much. I even like cold oatmeal without sugar on it, now... This is weird.

4 - I love red wine but hate the stains on my teeth. For some strange reason, the past week or more, I've noticed that I can drink the wine and my teeth don't have a dark red cast to them. They're staying whiter while I have the wine! I don't know why that is, but I guess it has been helping my enamel? I get a tiny bit of red in between my teeth but nothing at all of the dark, scary colors they were before I started pulling. I will keep writing to speak of more benefits as I go on with this. It's winter here and my office staff is prone to sickness a LOT and I choose to not catch those things so I want to see how this helps me. I am so grateful for finding this information that I tell a lot of people and post it to my Facebook to get them to try it."

02/09/2011: Spb from New York replies: "I have been oil pulling with extra virgin coconut oil for a month now. I suffer from Candida and the "die off" was pretty bad at first. I was tired and sleepy and the headaches were pretty unbearable. As a result I slowed down the process and only pulled oil once a day as opposed to twice a day. I also swallowed a teaspoon of coconut oil three times a day. Both the oil pulling and ingesting the coconut oil has worked wonders for me. So much so, that I actually stopped the process for a few days.

Once I stopped OP I noticed that my cravings for sugar returned, my symptoms of Candida returned, and the weight that I had initially lost started to come back. Basically, all of the benefits of coconut oil that I was experiencing (appetite control, weight loss, hormonal balance increased energy, better sleeping habits and yeast control) were all disappearing within a few days of stopping the process. Today, I started the process again and I'm feeling so much better. My sinuses are draining I am experiencing some mild "die off". Now, that I worked with oil pulling and noticed the difference of working without it, I will keep oil pulling as part of my daily routine.

I also plan to fast for 30 days of Lent on coconut oil. hopefully I won't experience any adverse effects of doing so."

02/11/2011: Hello from Seattle, Usa replies: "Are you taking any other remedies for Candida? I think I have it too, so I'm trying to determine what the best method is."

02/14/2011: B from D, Tx replies: "Try taking acidophilus."

03/13/2011: Sara from London, Uk replies: "I tried OP first time yesterday for a tooth abscess. I did it first thing in the morning with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, I had a dull head ache which I took it to be due to lack of sleep. Later on in the afternoon I tried OP again with Sunflower oil, but this time I felt really sick. I was dizzy and had a slight headache, my heart was racing for a little while, my spleen hurt and so did my lower back. Later in the evening I had a sore throat and earache. I woke up fine this morning, however I am afraid to do it again. I think perhaps I should've done it just once... Any suggestions on how to avoid feeling so bad afterwards? And is it always going to be like this? Thanks..."

04/15/2011: Madhavan from Bangalore, Karnataka/india replies: "Dear freinds, I think oil pulling does miracle if you all keep doing regularly, I am doing since last 6 months, I am really amazed how my tonsillitis has reduced to normal, my snoring has come down by 95%, my gastric problem has reduced by 90%, I am more energitic, and having good sleep, please do not stop keep doing it will surely help each and everyone, well I am using SUNFLOWER REFINED OIL."

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  12/09/2011: Hainer from London, Uk replies: "I have been oil pulling with sesame oil and have notice great improvements in the health of my gum and the teeth becoming whiter.

The only problem I have is the side effects which includes Blocked nose which is really annoying and I have to use decongestant to clear it up and feeling lethargic and weak. Although I have been doing it for many weeks but I stopped for a while and when I started again I am getting the same symptoms.

Some times I do OP for more than 20 minutes or even 30 minutes, and I wonder could this be the reason for feeling ill."

12/11/2011: Scearthgirl from Summerville, Sc replies: "Hi, I read somewhere earlier that taking apple cider vinegar in orally could help with Sinus issues. Search on sinuses and ACV and see what you find..."

It's been difficult to get my friends to dedicate their time to reading all the testimonies that are so important. When I discovered this site, I did have the time, and was convinced easily by the wonderful feedback. So now, I can point out your hard work to my friends with confidence. I am so grateful! Bless you."
02/24/2010: Openlyhappy from Mcdonugh, Ga replies: "Sandy thank you so much for compiling that data. Does anyone know if i could create a concoction or oils. I liked the reported effects of seasame, sinflower, coconut and olive. Could I put a measure of each in a potion? Will they cancel each other out??? Any thoughts?"
02/25/2010: Donna from Wimauma, Florida replies: "I have been reading this site and absolutely love all the wonderful information. It's the readers who really benefit from all these great testimonials. It makes you feel less alone. I have been reading up on rheumatoid arthritis, anxiety & depression. gosh if oil pulling can take care of that, that would be wonderful. Any Rheumatoid stories?"
11/23/2010: Sorrokine from Vs, Ny, Usa replies: "This is wonderful! I just tried the sesame oil OP and I already feel my sinuses opening. I Suffer from severe mold poisoning, and have gone the route of natural herbs to treat it with success. I am also suffering from a body candida infection from mold poisoning as well. This helped the thrush portion of the sickness I couldn't quite tame. I am being cured of the mold poisoning with great herbs and supplements. Learned the hard way that Doctors can't treat me for since they'll loose their license. Thank you Earth Clinic for your amazing group of people and their knowledge. I will post when I see more results."
[YEA]  02/09/2011: Spb from New York replies: "Sandy's list is on point! I have been pulling with extra virgin coconut oil for the past month and the results are amazing. I have better sleeping habits, suppression of appetite, weight loss, Candida is under control, PMS and hormonal balance (mood swings and pre-ovulation pain are gone! ). Whiter teeth, pink gums, increased energy, colon cleansing and you name it.

I have also been using coconut oil on my skin and as an oil treatment in my hair. My remains moist longer and my heels are softer. My hair is thicker. I highly recommend oil pulling with extra virgin coconut oil. "

But well, it is nice it works so well for other people, I don't doubt them and I will go on doing it anyway. I got so used to my ritual during the week while I read the paper online..... Great excuse too! "
02/17/2011: Ali from Swansea, Wales, Uk replies: "Hi Francisca.

Have you tried changing the kinds of oil you use. Have you made sure that the oil you are using is not too old, or rancid? Of course, like anything, it probably works better for some people than others, but is worth persevering with, as some things can take a long time to resolve."
02/17/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Hi Ali, I have tried sesame, sunflower, olive and VCO. I don't think that they where rancid but you never know! Anyway, I am not giving up even if I don't see any benefits! My dentist said that it is a good thing and anyway it must be a good exercise for the face muscles. You know, sometimes you don't see the benefits and still they are there but maybe not in place that show! "

10/02/2011: Bill from Ithaca, Ny replies: "Alina, I have been researching and using 'MMS' for heavy metal detox and memory improvement. Also for overall health. It would be worth your time to investigate the solution on Youtube or google it. Wikipedea has a lot to read about on it's discussion page with a reponse from Jim Humble at the end. It is inexpensive, safe and effective for a multitude of conditions including mold poisoning. It doesn't interact with medications and is only rendered inactive when taken with vitamin C. It's effective against viruses, bacteria, parasites, mold, many funguses, and pathogens. Good luck!"

TED'S FEEDBACK

12/30/2010: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "My response to an email regarding oil pulling:

Oil pulling depend on your objectives. The old oil pulling objective is to kill microorganisms. This is why they do 20 minutes using sunflower oil or sesame seed oil. As for me, oil pulling is done for 5 minutes using mostly olive oil or coconut oil with two objectives that I found resolves nearly all problems regarding the use of sesame seed oil and sunflower oil. The major problems appear that most people have heavy metal overload such as mercury. To do too long the oil pulling may cause excessive buildup of mercury and may go into your system if done for 20 minutes. Since I have a heavy metal tester I found oils uptake heavy metal very quickly in as little as 1 minute and need not do over 5 minutes limit. The second problem is virus and sore throat becomes a real problem with use of sesame or sunflower. The only oil pulling I have found without side effects come from olive oil and coconut oil. Coconut oil is antiviral and olive oil is somewhat antiviral, and both oils remove heavy metal form saliva being recirculated back to the body. The best way to remove bacteria is the use of toothpaste and simple brushing but to rid body of heavy metals oil pulling stands out. The use of coconut oil especially is antiviral and I used them against Pakinsons, Alzheimer, and ALS as I found personally are linked to virus. Alzheimer's is the HSV1 herpes simplex type 1 and ALS is linked to adenovirus while Parkinsons is linked to a flu virus, and coconut oil contains lauric which is antiviral, while olive oil is a efficient in removing heavy metal. OP in cats is difficult the easiest is to let cats consume coconut oil and salmon fish oil mixed in food or granulated lecithin also helps. Eating sulfur rich foods (garlic) and supplements helps especially taking 500 mg a day of N acetyl cysteine.

Just to clarify, are you now suggesting we OPer's should now only use either Coconut Oil or Olive Oil for 5 minutes and we will get the same benefits but with less chance of heavy metals being reintroduced into the bloodstream. If so that would be great, if I can do it in less time the better!"
01/09/2011: Fbk227 from Greenlawn, Ny, Usa replies: "Dear Ted,

Thank you for all this valuable information! I am 53 years old (young! ) and have just found this website to be invaluable. A question about OP, I just started last week with EVOO and noticed that I am breaking out all over my face, especially on my forehead. Is this a normal effect of the OP? I want to try so many things, but I think I am going to try and do only a few things at a time. I am taking an energy green powder in the morning on an empty stomach mixed with liquid vitamin d3, 2 tbs of chorophyll and a dropperful of guarnine. I don't want to overdue it. I am also taking 2tbs of organic ACV on a daily basis. My main objectives are to lose weight, get relief from RA, better eyesight, hair loss and a general feeling of lethargy. My skin is super dry and no matter how much creams or lotion I apply, it doesn't help. I tried taking coconut oil, but I couldn't stomach it. Would coconut oil tablets have the same benefits? I'm not asking for too much am I? LOL!"
02/17/2011: Ali from Swansea, Wales, Uk replies: "Hi. The breakout is undoubtedly a detox thing - the skin is a major detoxing organ and the oil-pulling probably triggered your body into having a clear out.

I too am 53 and it has taken me all these years to finally get a handle on my health. I have tried all sorts of diets and treatments but none of them worked until I found a healing diet run by Bee Wilder. I have been on it for 10 months now and although it doesn't give overnight results, I, and a lot of other people are gradually heaing, and it is wonderful. Her advice is free and her diet is based wholly on natural foods including coconut oil and real sea salt, and a few basic over-the-counter supplements.

Things like oil-pulling and acupuncture, etc. , can be used to support the benefits of the diet.

I have had Candida for over 40 years, and it is only now that I am finally getting rid of it and seeing many things healing in my body. It's wonderful."
02/19/2011: Aginto from Toronto, On replies: "Fbk227 - try taking nightly soaks in a tub filled with very warm water, 1 lb of baking soda (that's usually 1 pkg), and 2 cups of Epsom salts. That should help your skin along in the detox process. Soak for at least 20 minutes, and DONT RINSE before getting out. Mooisturize your wet body with an organic oil, pat dry, and put on your jammies. You will sleep like a baby and your skin will clear up!"
06/15/2011: Vreed27 from Edmonds, Wa replies: "@ Fbk227 I have found that it is a good idea to detoxify the skin by sitting in a hot bath (as hot as you can stand for 20 minutes) so that your skin can detox by sweating. Then a quick rinse off to remove the sweat/toxins from your skin should help the skin to clear up. (This also works by sitting in a hot sauna for the required 20 minutes with a quick rinse off after the sweating occurs."
08/16/2011: Jenjen from La, Ca replies: "OK..... This is great!! I am giving it a shot as we speak as I am generally healthy (with the exception of fatigue.... Due to STRESS) I recently got a bug bite which turned into some sort of infection that either is still lingering or just side affects from antibiotics..... Well my TOUNGE turned brownish yellow, then white and just doesnt seem to want to completely go away!!! I believe it is due to all the antibiotics? It has been lingering for almost a MONTH now..... Anyway wanted to add an FYI and see if any of you know about this..... Blood type and remedies..... Says in a book I have that OLIVE oil is great for my blood type, but Coconut oil is something to avoid..... So maybe the results you get from OP could be related to what oil you are using..... Depending on your blood type!! Any thoughts or experience?"
09/14/2011: Ruth from Uk replies: "Dear Ted,

You said 'virus and sore throat becomes a real problem with use of sesame/sunflower oil'. I have been using sunflower oil for 20 minutes a day for about 3 weeks and I've noticed extreme dryness in my mouth, my cheeks sticking to teeth etc. Although I'm drinking regularly and about 2 litres a day. I've never had this before and am convinced it's the sunflower oil. Why is this? Is it linked to your quote about a virus? Would you recommend I switch to using olive oil or coconut oil for 5 minutes instead, and does this give you all the benefits but none of the risks of re-absorbing metals? Many thanks!"

09/18/2011: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "@Ruth from Uk--Yes sunflower produces these side effects (infection and sore throats). The preferred oils are coconut oil, because lauric acid is antiviral in coconut oil, which makes ideal for oil pulling because it doesn't cause this. Olive oil is the same (especially extra virgin) olive oil as it contains antiviral oleuropin. That's the weakness of sunflower oil. All oils work the same in detoxing heavy metals out, but you need coconut oil and olive oil as they have additional antibiotic qualities, that sunflower oil and sesame seed miss. And the most common complaints are about sunflower oil and sesame seed, people having dry mouth, and other problems, that olive oil and coconut oil works better.

Ted"

I went out and bought some avacado oil with lemon as I thought that would taste a little better. It does.

I am currently using 1/2 a TBSP as I find it hard to keep in a whole TBSP due to loads of saliva.

I will update regarding my gum disease when I have visited the Periodontist in July.

I have however noticed the following: the bags under my eyes have flattened down considerably and strangely enough my sinus's cleared so well - I was not even aware how congested I was until they cleared. Will keep you updated."

Also, do not use peanut oil. I was told when I first started pulling not to use it because of the mold it develops after it is picked."

QUESTION

[YEA]  07/30/2011: African Bride from Z-bar, Tanzania writes: "After reading about oil pulling on this site, I decided to give it a try to see if it would stop the recurring boils I was having. The only cold-pressed oil I could find was castor oil, so that's what I've been using for two weeks. I am happy to report no more boils! I hope it stays that way! I know everyone says to use turmeric for boils, but I've tried it, and it didn't get rid of them. My four year old son also has recurring boils- he's had them ever since he was 1- I wonder if I can teach him how to OP.

The other marvelous result I just realized a couple days ago. I have no more body odour! This is amazing, b/c I had it bad. Tried everything to keep it under control- strong deoderants, natural ones, ACV, vodka, baking soda, essential oils... If this good result keeps up, I will OP the rest of my life!!

My teeth have felt very clean, but I can't say they've gotten any whiter. My teeth are have always been yellow, although I don't drink tea, coffee, wine or anything. I will try to find some sesame oil, maybe that will make a difference.

Amazing remedy, to be sure."

[QUESTION]  03/18/2009: Susan from Oshkosh, WI writes: "Hello everyone! I have become addicted to the site like everybody else. I have a question about oil pulling. 03/19/2009: Sueli from Boston, MA replies: "Hello and thank you to all who contribute to this wonderful resource! I have a question regarding blood type and type of oil used. I read somewhere that there is a way to find depending on one's blood type a particular oil may work best for his/her condition (I don't know if this is only true for oil pulling, or if it holds true for ingesting the oil also). Does anyone know about this? Thanks in advance."
03/19/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hello Susan,

Most castor oil I have seen comes in 2, 4 or 6 ounce bottles which are clearly labeled for oral ingestion, so why would you need one that states food grade when it is clearly labeled to be taken orally for a laxative effect. I agree with the one who stated that the only adverse effect you would likely have with OP with castor oil would be a laxative effect and since you would be expectorating the castor oil it wouldn't be passing through the intestines whereby it causes the laxative action, therefore there should be no laxative effect as long as you don't swallow it.

For me the worst side effect would be smelling and tasting the castor oil because I despise both the smell and taste, even the ones sold as tasteless & odorless. I had too much of the castor oil forced down in childhood, because this was my parents answer to whatever ailed us. Must have been beneficial because most of my siblings are still alive and I am #8 of 10 children and the youngest who is 6 years my junior is now 70 years old. So if you can tolerate the smell & taste, just be sure to spit the used oil out and be sure to let us know what your opinion of it is. Thanks for sharing with the rest of us."

12/05/2011: Erika from Novato, Ca/usa writes: "Just found your site a couple nights ago and have been on it for hours each day since. Thank you for providing this great resource!

I tried OP this morning while in the shower. I started with 1tsp of Coconut Oil as I thought 1 Tbsp. Would definitely make me gag. It was a solid and I knew it would take some time to melt, but within a second or two I was gagging and involuntarily spit it out in the sink. I didn't want to throw up so I waited a few minutes until I had myself under control and tried 1/4 tsp. It took all the self control I could muster to not vomit, but after 30 seconds it was melted and I started to swish. It was much easier once it was melted and just felt like I had saliva in my mouth. After 20 mins though, I had so much in my mouth, I wonder how I'm ever going to keep more than 1/2 tsp in my mouth (I plan on trying to work my way up).

What would be a good way to melt the oil first as I think that was what was causing me to gag. Any other suggestions on dealing with volume?"

Replies
12/06/2011: Cf from Delaware, Us replies: "To melt my oil, I fill a coffee cup about a third of the way with hot/boiling water, then place a small juice glass containing my solid oil in the cup of water. As long as the water is above 76 degrees, the oil will melt. Don't use the microwave. To deal with volume, you can spit out a little at a time when too much saliva builds up, but don't spit it in the sink. Use the waste basket, or a small paper dixie cup. Congrats on trying this process. I have been op-ing for 14 months now, and have seen quite a range of benefits from doing it."
12/11/2011: Cat from Tauranga, New Zealand replies: "I use coconut oil for pulling each morning and have about a tablespoon full at a time and find that by the end, there isn't so much saliva that I feel like I have to empty some out but I'm wondering if you are producing that much from the fact that your body is/was in need of a good clean out and it's releasing so many toxins... ? I would in that case, work my way up as you suggested to finally reach 1 tbspn. GOOD quality coconut oil should be quite beautiful and velvety, have a subtle taste and I would imagine, be much more pleasant that any other oil. Stick with it, you'll be so pleased with the results."

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  05/05/2011: Kate from Orange , Nsw, Australia writes: "I got an email from a wise old lady who I respect suggesting I may be able to help my sinusitus with oil pulling with coconut oil. Having suffered from this for about 6 years (started when I moved into a mouldy house.. But this may just have been a trigger or coincidence) I was pretty desperate. My instincts told me this could be the one so I hooned down to the health food shop and bought some coconut oil (it wasn't the brand my wise friend had recommended but it was all they had.

I took it straight away (about 5pm) .. Immediately I experienced mucous cascading into my mouth and a few minutes later I vomited. I perserved with more oil and did the 20 minutes feeling very very nauseous. That night I spent a very very disturbed night of mucous action (eek gross.. ended up blowing my nose into an old sarong and spitting into a bucket all night). after 3 more treatments I had the most amazing clearing of my sinuses in my forehead. 3 days later I was full of severe joint aches and blocked ears to the extent that I took to my bed thinking I had malaria (which I had had 3 months prior to this).

I then had blocked ears (like I was losing altitude in a plane) for the next 3 weeks but lessening mucous action.

Now a month later.. Better than ever before.. not cured but I think I will be as I continue.

Other good side effects seem to be increased energy levels. Downside was when I ran out of this brand of oil and tried some others while travelling and they were gross (tasted rancid). Hasn't as yet made my teeth whiter but I do live in hope.

Another huge plus was finding this site when researching oil pulling. WOW.. You guys rock! Thanks!"

I kept oil pulling every morning for 20 min. Then rinsed my mouth. Following all the directions. I realized that it must have been doing it's job and detoxing my body. I experienced terrible headaches as well. Unfortunately I had to stop due to a very important weekend, that I didn't want to be sick for. So I didn't get to see the other side of the detox.

I recently started oil pulling again with Coconut oil. I did it for about 2 and half weeks. I only stopped because I ran out. I love it as a lotion! Although with oil pulling every morning for about 20 minutes, after 2 weeks I didn't notice anything. No changes. I have heard that Coconut oil is good for candida. I know I probably have bad candida because I am always craving sugar, and need to change my diet. But it seemed to make me hungrier and crave more sweets. I am also a vegetarian and haven't touched meat in 4 years, and I craved and couldn't stop myself from tasting a few bites of chicken and beef! Should I start again? Or is there a way to tell what oil might be the best for me?"

Red meats are actually good for you, especially the organic red meats and the animals are taken care of and allowed to roam freely. The health benefits from eating meat along with low carb vegatables is great. I still love my vegatables but I also like healthy meats just the same. And trust me when I saw this you will fuction better if you taken everything that is of a organic nature of course their are a few exceptions on certain plants and other things that I stay away from such as soy, corn, wheat, yeast and milk."

For me, EVCO was much stronger detox than the others; so much I had to quit after about 8 days to recoop. It sounds to me like you are experiencing a "healing crisis". Your body retains things from the past; as you detox you peal away the layers last in first out, thus you experience symptoms of a point in time much longer ago; interesting that you crave meat..."

[YEA]  01/23/2011: Suthernbellatl from Atlanta, Ga writes: "I have just began OP and have read some of the side effects many are having, many very unfortunate. But what I have noticed within myself that after starting slow, once a day on an empty stomach, my saliva flow is very active and I keep a cup around for about an extra hour, because the way I see it, your body has not completely ended the pulling process just because you spit out the oil. So to keep from poisoning myself, I keep a cup around and didnt incur any side effects whatsoever."

12/16/2010: Robanatta from London, Ontario writes: "I was experiencing mild conjunctavitis in my left eye -not red but burning, itching, and mucous discharging. After my first OP with the coconut oil it was almost completely gone! I also felt lighter and had more energy, as well as my sinuses felt clearer. I hadn't noticed that my sinuses were congested, but they're just... Clearer?! ?

Then I did a OP with safflower oil several hours later. I'm finding that my throat is releasing toxins now. I'm starting to hack-up crap from my lungs -I'm an ex-smoker for 5 months now- and they feel like they are REALLY starting to clean out. I do have a mild head-ache, and a mild soar throat (only on the right side (weird! )), but I still feel healthy... I'm going to use the extra virgin coconut oil in the morning -I like the natural anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties of the oil as well as the MC-triglicerides- for a power cleanse in the morning. And then, I'll use the safflower oil with oregano for the other two treatments in before lunch and dinner. I might even try hemp oil before going to bed, as I've read that it makes one sleepy after using it. (I don't have trouble sleeping as it is, but any extra help might be good). GLTA... I'm glad to have heard about OP and this web-site..."

[YEA]  10/20/2010: Cassie from Boston, Ma writes: "I tried this for 3 weeks before I had to go to the dentist on a lark because I hadn't been flossing and I was dreading the blood, pain, and lectures I'm used to at the dentist. I oil swish coconut oil while I'm showering every morning for about 10-15 minutes. Just got back from the dentist yesterday--she said, "Wow. You have really been trying hard! " She said there was virtually no plaque. Plus, when she flossed for me and cleaned and scraped what little plaque there was there was no pain and no bleeding! I'm never stopping! First pleasant trip to the dentist ever."

[YEA]  08/20/2010: Iris from Los Angeles, Ca, U.s. writes: "I have been using coconut for oil pullin for 2 days. Today is 8/20/2010.

I was looking for a way to avoid root canals. I had pain in my teeth on both sides of my mouth and just did not want any more root canals. I read in a book written by a dentist that root canals allow bacteria to set up as soon as 24 hours after they are done. And that the bacteria can spread to other parts of your body and cause pain and disease that the medical doctor won't make the connection that the problem is stemming from a root canal whether it was done years ago or just recently. I am happy I found this site. My goodness how can swossing oil around your mouth have such power and allow you to reap such benefits? Here are some of mine:

The first night I found out about oil pulling I just used a cotton swab to massage my gums and teeth with olive oil. The next morning my gums were so sore. I wonder if the oil stirred up the bacteria in my gums. I started oil pulling that morning with coconut oil as I read it killed bacteria. Over a period of some time, my teeth had become yellow, I do not know why as they used to be white, white, white. I oil pulled for 20 minutes. Immediatly I saw that my teeth lightened up tremendously. I was elated. I had used tooth bleach but the procedure would have to be repeated). Mucous began to released as I was doing the oil pulling and continued afterward for probably over an hour (I didn't time it). My teeth are so smooth now (and whiter), only after 2 days of this. When I drink water now, I feel so hydrated and the water taste good just hitting my mouth. This is something I had never even thought of. I didn't know what I was missing until now. The pain in my teeth has lessened. I can still feel a little bit. But it is leaving.

I had pain, first in my right hip, then got tremendous pain in my left hip. Now both areas are almost pain free. Also, I had pain in my neck and shoulders, it is gone. I am feeling twinges of pain I believe in my lung area. I used to wake up practically craving junk food and would have to force myself to eat the healthy organic foods that I always buy. The cravings seem to be gone for the time being. Now I feel stable and want the healthy organic vegetables with no problem. I woke up this morning with a lot of energy and couldn't wait to get out for my morning job. I had gotten to the place where I felt exercise was something I "had to do". Now I am back to the pleasure of taking care of my body. And not only that, my joy of doing things and new ideas are returning. The feeling I have now is: What can I do today. I love this. The relief of these symptoms tells me that bacteria can cast a dreary veil over your life. I am thankful for the founders of this site. Oh, one other thing. My doctor said, I have high sugar but not high enough to be on medication. Sugar is an environment where bacteria can flourish. I believe the cocunut oil pulling has killed a lot of bacteria in internal environment."

[WARNING!]  07/20/2010: Ibiza from New York, Ny writes: "I've been oil pulling for almost two weeks now. I use 1 Tbls. Of Virgin unrefined VCO. I do it first thing in the morning after I clean my teeth but before any food. I read about it here and also read several people's testimonies about cleansing crises. I didn't think I would have one because, prior to oil pulling, I had been on a simple cleansing diet for two months, composed only of organic fruits, vegetables, nuts and beans, teas and water. However, I have started a crisis. Let me say that, after about 5 days of doing it, I started to have slight pain while urinating. It felt like the beginning of a bladder infection. It cleared up in about 3 days without doing anything special. Afterward, I also noticed that my urine felt "heavy, " and maybe slightly darker. Mind you, I was drinking a lot of water. I just felt like toxins were being eliminated. Yesterday, during yoga class, I noticed that my perspiration tasted different. It actually burned my tongue a little and I had to wipe my mouth! I also attribute this to toxins being eliminated. I take a lot of yoga classes and sweat sometimes gets in my mouth. It's normally slightly salty and not gross at all. But the biggest thing that happened is that my heat sensitivity issue shot through the roof. I had several sweating spells when I just could not stop sweating almost all over my body. It felt like a seizure almost. (I've never had a seizure but I imagine you feel very much out of control). I was working in a tight space and it was awful! I'm lucky to have found a great natural deodorant that worked fantastically but it was still a nightmare. Before I realized that it was a healing crisis, I was so depressed, thinking that I was going backwards. I have been dealing with hormone disruption for over two years due to exposure to toxins that stopped my period, caused hot flashes, which turned into heat sensitivity. Now that I know what the crisis is, and that my body is really cleansing a lot, I feel much better about it. Still, I am going to have to slow the cleansing down. I just can't have sweating episodes. I'm going to not do the OP two days a week when I have to go into work. I also just started alkalizing my water with drops. I imagine that my system is very acidic from the toxins. Becoming more alkaline must help. I am also going to switch to sesame oil, the traditional oil used for OP. I did a lot of reading and I think it's the one I need, even though I like the VCO.

I also started taking a tsp of VCO in the evening. I read that it is really good for high cholesterol and thyroid issues. My theory is that my immune system has been compromised by allergens, both natural and artificial. As a result, my liver is working too hard and my endocrine system has been challenged. I know that my hormones are completely crazy. My inner barometer is broken. I feel like my heat sensitivity is due to that and is also a response to allergens which are not being dealt with efficiently because my liver is overworked. I know that thyroid and cholesterol issues run on both sides of my family. This bad smelling and toxic sweat, I believe, is really a secretion brought about by high cholesterol. Lipids are being excreted through my skin and they contain toxins that are being carried out of the body. The sesame oil will help internally and also externally as a nightly massage. I am going to try scrubbing my skin periodically with baking soda because it actually itches a little (I guess from the toxins) even though I use a peppermint castile soap. The liver produces cholesterol when it can't get it from dietary sources. I'm not sure but maybe VCO and sesame oil ease the production of these lipids by the liver. Eventually, I will also take a tsp of sesame oil daily too. I will report back about the progress!"

If by the second night you haven't found complete relief, up the dosage! You might try muscle testing to set the dosage... I've been using this for YEARS! Give a holler at me if you have any other questions regarding this.... Blessings!!! Laineyisat[at]gmail[dot]com"
10/14/2011: Julie5510 from Baltimore, Maryland replies: "I've never heard of using oil pulling for hot flashes, but if it's like 'killing two birds with one stone' then it's with trying. I have done OP in the past but never with coconut oil. But I'll start tomorrow morning... I wanted to suggest what I use for hot flashes, 1 tbsp. Apple cider vinegar, 1 tbsp. Honey, 1/2 cup. Hot water. I drink it every evening and my hot flashes have disappeared."
