Iodine Painting:

Hello, I am 59 year old female and just ordered some Lugols iodine and then I used it for a day and then looked up on webMD and lifescript and even here on EC that you cannot use Iodine if you are on certain high blood pressure medications which I am for now.. Been using natural things as complimentary .. going to find the balance ... Is this true? Can't use iodine at all? Thank You.

Lugol's Iodine Side Effects   0  0

[SIDE EFFECTS]  I just bought lugol's 5% solution on Amazon. I used 2 drops in water. The next morning I had vaginal bleeding. I was so scared that I stopped using it. That was the only day I had the bleeding. Does anyone know why that would happen. I really wanted to take iodine because of the benefits people have experienced. I do not know if I should start using it again or not?

Sam, if you feel you need Lugol's Iodine, why don't you paint it on your skin (soles of feet, for example) instead of ingesting it?

Posted by Jr (Coloma, Mi) on 04/02/2013

[SIDE EFFECTS]  After taking the 5% solution of lugols iodine, I get a strange metalic taste in my mouth. I wondered if this was normal and if anyone else experiences this?

Hi Jr... It is certainly possible to get excess iodine symptoms as a metallic taste in the mouth, although my own suspicions are that this problem, when supplementing iodine, may well be caused by the excess bromine in your body being displaced from cells into the blood by the iodine. Excess bromine from the tissues is difficult to remove from the body and this can also cause a metallic taste in the mouth. See this article here on Bromism.

I myself have taken 16 drops a day of 5% lugol's iodine iodine for an extended period and have never had any metallic taste or any other symptoms arise. But I come from a country where bromine is not added to the bread -- but in America, bromine is always added to bread during baking. And whenever you supplement lugol's iodine, you must always ensure that you take the full Iodine Protocol shown here to avoid problems caused by a poor diet (low anti-oxidant, low mineral processed food diet).

If the metallic taste arises from excess bromine in the blood (from supplementing lugols iodine) then you should simply use the simple Sea Salt Protocol as shown in this link to get rid of the excess bromine problem.

Theory of Bromide Dominance.

Bill, I too get that "metallic" taste in my mouth when I take iodine. To me, it tastes similar to a chlorine taste. I just figured that that's what the halide elements tasted like. I tried looking it up, but couldn't find anything. I do make sure that I put my iodine in distilled water to rule out the fluoride/chlorine interaction and just chug it down. I also avoid bread products unless I know that the flour does not have bromine in it and have avoided sodas with brominated vegetable oil, like orange. I do take the companion nutrient protocol as advised, as well, including the salt water. I don't have any other symptoms of brominism, though. I'm just offering my experience!

[SIDE EFFECTS]  Hi, I read that many people are iodine deficient. I am in need of more energy, so I thought perhaps it was due to an Iodine deficiency. So I tried Lugols 2%. I took 5 drops in water per day for the first 3 weeks, didn't notice any changes, took 7 drops per day in water for about 10 days, still no changes. Then I stepped back and noticed I had gained 10 lbs in the last month which is a lot for me (I am 5'7" 170lbs normally-should be 160lbs), so there was a change but I don't know if it was caused by the Iodine and wanted to get some feedback on my Iodine use. I stopped using it in the last few days to see if any of the weight comes off, no change yet. Did I use it long enough, or did I not need it to begin with?

@ Asktodaboutrealestate: Your weight gain could be the displaced toxins being stored in your body until it has time to process them. It sounds like you increased your Iodine dose too quickly but more importantly, you were probably not taking the companion supplements that aid the body with this detox (Selenium, Magnesium, Unrefined Celtic salt, Vitamin C, Vitamin B2/3. Since your kidneys and other organs could not keep up with the toxins being displaced by the Iodine, it stored those in body fat hence the weight gain from the bloat. This is just a theory I have heard about and feel is potentially true. For anyone who wants to try Iodine supplements, I suggest you research thoroughly before you begin.

[SIDE EFFECTS]  I started taking iodine internally, namely Lugol's iodine, two days ago. Only using 2 drops per day. My blood sugars are much higher than normal. Before using the Lugol's, I simply was painting regular iodine on my skin of which I purchased at CVS drugstore in the first aid section. What could be causing the Lugol's to raise my blood sugars? Perhaps I should stop taking it or maybe try using it transdermally? Thanks, signed Baffled

Elizabeth, it could be that your basal or overall metabolism is boosted by the Iodine, but a Chromium deficiency is causing a lag in sugar metabolism via ineffective Insulin uptake. Take 200 - 400 mcg Chromium Picolinate at least twice a day. Some Cinnamon caps would also help.

[SIDE EFFECTS]  I have been taking lugol's solution for a few months now. I don't have any particular health issues per se, so am basically taking it for overall health. I did notice that after a while my breast has become sore even after my period has come and gone. It is basically sore all day and I am not pregnant. My worry is that it is coming from the Lugol's solution. Has anyone else exereinced this if so what is the cause? I thought that iodine was supposed to help with breast pain.

I just saw your question so maybe it is too late to respond, but I also had this problem a few months after I reached the full dosage of iodine (taking Iodorl and slowly increasing my dose to 50mg). Nevertheless, I continued and that symptom went away and my breast tissue has never been better, one year later.

[SIDE EFFECTS]  Hi everyone:

Thank You for the wonderful information on this website; it is a great resource~ I recently have started supplementation for iodine in the past month and I have noticed a symptom that I am concerned about: burning eyes. Is there a connection between iodine supplementing and this? I am taking all the companion supplements. However, 500 mg of niacin is a little too strong for me at this point, so I am taking 100 mg 2 x/day instead of 500 mg/2 x day. I was taking 4 drops of Lugol's 2% initially, bumped that up to 4 drops 2 x/day and just went up to 6 drops/2 x day. Is this too much? I had detox symptoms before taking the companion supplements, now the eyes seem to be my main issue. If anyone has helpful advice or guidelines, I would love to know.

Thank You!

Hi Alicia... I don't think you are taking iodine in excess -- you are taking, in effect, only about 32 mgs per day(of 2% Lugol's Iodine).

I think your eye burning problem is more problably caused by niacin excess or overdose:

"Symptoms of overdose of Niacin (B3) include: whole flushing of the body, burning sensation in the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, blurred vision, skin itching, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, lightheadedness."

Source: http://www.erowid.org/smarts/vitamins/vitamins_basics1.shtml

You may be getting enough niacin in your diet -- try taking niacin once every two or three days for a while or even eliminating it altogether to see if that makes a difference.

Hi, I seem to remember someone on this site mentioning that you can tell you are allergic to iodine if you get itchy or watery eyes. I get this side effect myself, so I use the least amount that's helpful. Hopefully you'll find an answer to this problem.

I work in a lab & use grams iodine when making slides, the iodine fumes make my eyes water & sting.

In 1986 when I had a gall bladder scan, I was given iodine tablets. I had a reaction--eyes swelled shut and face swelled as well. Do not remember having any respiratory issues.

I since have eaten shellfish, use salt, etc. without any allergic reactions.

Having been told I had an allergic reaction to the tablets, do you think I could also have allergy issues with the Lugol's Iodine?

I have been reading about the health benefits of Lugol's and very much want to try it. I am having a lot of health issues (breast cancer being one) and believe that it could help me. I am on Armor Thyroid right now as well.

Thank you for any suggestions!!

[SIDE EFFECTS]  I was taking Lugol's iodine for about a week, then stopped for 2 weeks, then started up 2 days ago, 5 drops diluted in water (what women say to take daily for breast cancer prevention). Right after taking the drops yesterday, I had an immediately reaction: runny nose and slight pressure behind the eyes. Today (Monday) my nose is still runny, but the pressure behind my eyes is a bit less. I know the runny nose is from having too much iodine in my body. Should I be worried? How can I pull the excess iodine from my system? I am going to stop the iodine for at least a month now and if I take it in the future, no more than 1-2 drops at a time.

Actually iodine that you are taking are mostly harmless. The eye pressure and headache issue has a lot to do with the problems associated with elemental iodine. Taking about 1000 mg x 4 of vitamin C sodium ascorbate should neutralize most of the problems.

If not, eat white bread as it is high in bromine. I have taken much more iodine before, but it is in the form of potassium iodide and sodium iodide, closer to 100 mg, not mcg either. The Japanese eats 1000 times above iodine dose and has no effect because the high content of bromine and iodine are found in kelp. A kelp supplement inspite of high iodine, has much higher bromine and can also displace it.

In general no harm but elemental iodine are oxidative in nature and vitamin C sodium ascorbate should lessen that problem. What elemental iodine does to the body is it raises the ORP to be a positive value and the sodium ascobate 1000 mg x 5 will put the ORP to a normal negative values just as before. Drinking plenty of water with a small amount of sea salt will displace the unneeded iodine.

The runny nose and sinus headache (pressure behind your eyes) are most likely a detoxification effect of the iodine you are taking. The iodine has the effect of detoxifying your body of the other toxic halides that are so prevalent in our modern diets and environments. The addition of vitamin C usually helps with the detoxification. The toxic halides are fluorine, chlorine, and bromine. They are toxic to our bodies and have no use by our bodies. They will attach to iodine receptors in the body, but they won't perform the function of iodine, thus the toxicity.

Fluorine and fluoride are added to most municipal water supplies these days, but many, many studies show no difference in the number of cavities and dental maladies between fluoridated and nonfluoridated water populations. Better dental hygiene and education have reduced the cavities more than the addition of fluorine to our water supplies. Trusting community leaders were sold on fluoridation by an industry that needed an outlet for its toxic byproduct, no we all are forced to consume the toxic fluorine.

Chlorine is toxic. Chloride is essential in the body, but chlorine is toxic. Chlorine is added to many water supplies, is used in pools, is found in bleach. The byproduct of chlorine bleach is dioxin, one of the biggest carcinogens known to our planet. Iodine could be used to make and keep our water supplies and pools safe, and is not toxic like chlorine.

Bromine is toxic and has replace iodine in the treatent of wheat for our flour. Bromine is found in flame-retardant and insecticides. We are exposed to bromine from many environmental sources. It is toxic.

With the abundance of toxic halides we are routinely exposed to in our modern diets and environments, it is not unusual to experience detoxification effects when you increase your iodine intake. The detoxification may occur, but the runny nose and the headache (and acne or any other symptom of the toxic substances leaving your body) will subside as the toxins are eliminated. The addition of vitamin C and fish oil along with the iodine will help with the detoxification. But, I do not agree with the previous suggestion by Ted that consuming bread (presumably for the bromine content) is a wise solution to the underlying cause of the effect (ingestion of more toxins may temporarily relieve your runny nose, but it is also adding more toxins to be eliminated from your body).

Lugol's solution is potassium iodide, the same iodine compound found in seaweed and sea vegetables, but in a standardized form, and elemental (molecular) iodine. Molecular iodine dissolves more readily in water that already contains potassium iodide. In our bodies, the thyroid gland absorbs iodide, breaks off the potassium or sodium portion of the compound and concentrates the iodine portion in the thyroid gland. Elsewhere in the body, the mammary glands and the ovaries have huge demands for iodine, too, but their preferences seem to be for molecular iodine. The whole endocrine system utilizes iodine or iodide, the digestive system needs iodine, the integumentary system, the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, and the skeletal system all need iodine or iodide. Excess iodine is excreted in the urine. The presence of sufficient iodine in the body detoxifies the body of not only the toxic halides, but also heavy metals, such as lead ad mercury.

Physicians knew of the wonders of iodine over a hundred years ago, then a bad study cast it into the depths of oblivion until recent research into breast health and thyroid health have brought it back into the medical world's attention. Iodine is a natural product. There is little monetary profit for anyone to make from its promotion. The "profit" is for all of us in society whose heath and well-being has been suffering since iodine was cast off in error. Hopefully, the modern research will recapture the attention of mainstream medicine and we will be able to undo the damage.

Remember that minerals or supplements and treatments can be either a food or a poison. Food at the correct dose and a poison if too concentrated. If you analyze your hair the minerals are measured in parts per million. So very weak solutions of iodine regularly are better, not enough to discolour but enough for the skin to absorb. This also solves the problem of finding discoloured iodine. The same applies to anything that may burn, if it burns you are using far too much and causing damage instead of causing healing.

Molluscum Contagiosum   1  0

Posted by Wiesewose (Cairns, Australia) on 08/14/2010

[YEA]  My 5year old daughter had a severe case of molluscum contagiosum. She started with about 10 of the warts on her buttocks, and they started multiplying and spreading very fast. Within a year she had I estimate over a hundred all down her legs. And my 3 other children started to get them too. I freaked out. Twice I went to the docter, and both times he told me to let it run its course. Yeah right; that was what I did for a year and look what happened! And what if it spread to my newborn baby? My daughter was getting self conscious, you could see them on her legs under her school uniform. I had to do something. I tried ACV, clay baths, a product from the chemist for warts, Epsom salts and olive oil mixed with lemon myrtle essential oil, or even pulling them out with tweezers. Nothing worked.

I then tried Lugol's iodine, and the little buggers started to crust over after 3 days of applying Lugols twice a day with a Q-tip, and when the crust fell off, nothing was underneath! You could actually see the white center (that is the virus) soak all the iodine up and look like a blackhead, YEAH! That's exactly where the iodine needed to go. Within one month all my children are Mollusum free. You cannot describe the relief I feel, I have to share that.

[YEA]  I was sick with a bad cold last week. This was very surprising, as I have not been sick in four years, ever since I started eating a nutrient dense, WAPF diet based on Nourishing Traditions (by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig).

The only recent contributory change I made in my lifestyle was that I started finishing off with icy cold showers. These have been amazing for my skin, digestion, lipomas, stamina, muscles, hormones, libido and overall energy, but a few deleterious things happened along the way - I lost some weight I did not want to lose, I developed throbby wrists, I suddenly menopaused (or thought I did), and my sleep became disturbed. I would wake up at 3:00 am, and during the day felt tired as a result. If I cold showered in the evening, it had the effect of two cups of coffee on me. I'd be wired. I think cold showers affect you in strange ways. And finally, I got this cold. Probably after going out into the cold after one of my cold showers in the am.

Anyway, I started with a dropperful of 7% Lugols' in the middle of my cold. The effect has been nothing short of incredible. For the first time in several months, I've been sleeping like a baby. I un-menopaused. Was it really iodine my body needed to fix sleep problems I've never had in my life? When I sleep well, everything else sort of fixes itself. My skin has become wonderful. My cold melted away. Chest phlegm disappeared. Insomnia I suspect is at the root of many mental and physical ailments. Sleep repairs, restores. Iodine is now going to be a regular part of my life. Now, if I could get my partner to try some, the thyroid issues I suspect in his body might resolve themselves.

I should also add my sense of smell (which had gradually eroded over the last decade) is coming back.

Posted by Bladey56 (Brisbane, Australia) on 09/23/2011

For the last 4 months I have been on iodine worked up to 50mg daily (lugols) blood test awaiting for complete thyroid check. Along with companion nutrients (selenium, vit c) along with mag/cal/boron/, lysine, b complex and naicin, omega 3/6 ratio correction in my diet and removed as much fluoride and bromide as possible (reverse osmosis) less processed food. My transformation has been amazing. I was 105, and now down to 85, my skin is repairing from the sun damage, face sunspots are peeling from lips, cheeks, arms. I now sleep without waking during the night, my body temp now regulates correctly.

I started my father on the same diet, he's got a history of high blood pressure and cholesterol, now after 1 months his blood pressure is normal and cholesterol is now within normal range. I have achieved this with no extra exercise, other than my daily job. The last time I lost weight with the gym and just eating "well" made me tired and I just gained the weight again, I am 25 years old and I feel the benefit everyday from this very powerful supplement, being tired at the end of the day is a thing from the past, no brain fog, just clean thinking.

[YEA]  I have been supplementing with iodine for almost a month. I started at 25mg and now I am at 100mg. Iodine has helped me lose my problem with cold legs in an 80 deg F. room when I was in bed. No more cold legs. Also a long time problem with postnasal drip is gone. My brain seems to be working in a clearer fashion and my vision is much better. It really seems that every facet of my health has been improved. I use Iodoral, Iosol, and potassium iodide now but will eventually use Lugol's (liquid iodine) at home and Iodoral (tablet version of Lugol's) when travelling.

BTW, I don't think I will go higher than 100mg as I am getting very good results now. I don't worry about ODing at all. Please Google "Dr.Brownstein and iodine" for more info. You do need to take companion supplements like magnesium, zinc, lipoic acid, vitamins B C D E K, selenium, fish oil, zeolite, chlorella, to help with the detox that high levels of iodine will force to happen. You will excrete lots of bromine, chlorine, and fluorine, that your body has been storing/accumulating for decades. I can smell the stuff when I pee. Join the Yahoo iodine group.

[YEA]  A pharmacy prepared a bottle of Lugols for me no problem for 2.60 euro but another pharmacie were very unlightened and cautious and another pharmacist assured me that I couldn't take it internally! I told my doctor who seemed completely uninterested but results were quick; my severly chapped lips have healed, skin gradually less itchy, hair even seems to be changing (sebaceous glands) and eyes less sensitive. As far as female gland activity well lets say that its high tide!

Lugol's has a shelf life of 1 month after being prepared. I keep mine in the fridge door too to slow oxidation. It has also stopped my huge allergy type reactions to every change in the weather - wind, rain.

hello to all! I like to point out a link on curezone concerning the shelf life of lugol because I really think that some pharmacists want you to discard the product early so you can buy more often. lugol made with distilled water can last for years! Peace, take good care of yourself www.curezone.com/forums/am.asp?i=846547
